The Strokes as a "big thing" on the OC or whatever cultural machine is setting the standard is over, but they're still arguably the best garage rock band out there. And none of these groups would exist without Is This It? It's to nuvo garage rock what The Chronic is to gangsta rap.

The Reigning Sound is garage, The Strokes are nowhere near it. Strokes are still really good, but I'm sick of that genre tag.

And I defy anyone who says that the second record is no good, or even inferior to the first. The first was a blast of fresh air, and maybe more straight ahead rock, but fuck the second album still RULES, and I am anticipating their new record more than any this year, save THE ROLLING STONES (finishing up in the studio, bitches)

I will defy you on this point. I really loved the first record, but I wanted to turn off Room on Fire I was so fucking bored. I let it play through once and grudgingly put it on again later on. I shut it off that time shortly after 12:51 which is a great song. I'll listen to Is This It over and over, but not the second one. Never again. Courtney Love's 'Julian But I'm a Little Older Than You' is better than anything on Room on Fire.

An interesting little tidbit on the strokes second album: does everyone remember how Nigel Godrich recorded three tracks for the album? the band then said that it wasn't working out and went back to their first producer...
well actually, a friend of mine knows the studio engineer for that record and the story's a little bit different. The Strokes were super excited and nervous because they were working with Radiohead's producer. Nigel agreed to do a few songs and see how it went. They got about three tracks into it before Nigel headed off to some posh place in LA to start mixing. He came back and told the band that he wasn't into it, and that they should find somebody else. He dumped the strokes... The management spun it off otherwise

oh yeah and nick valensi is in my ring of husbands, so another reason why i heart the strokes. :P

I think we'd all be interested in seeing the order of succession. Thom Yorke is obviously #1, but is Nick #2? How about a Top 5? Is Nick Cave on your list? If so, you may have to brawl with polly six over him.

I rocked the fuck ouot of both these albums recently, and the only real difference is production, which is made to sound more boohoo rocked out on IIT...I may like Room on Fire BETTER..then again I am smarter and have better taste than most of you ;)

This is odd because I've been meaning to start a 'Re-evaluating Albums' thread and I was going to nominate 'Room On Fire'. I've been listening to it a whole lot recently.

Perhaps the first album is the better overall package but songs like 'What Ever Happened?' and 'I Can't Win' are probably the best things The Strokes have ever done.

I also think Julian Casablanca's vocals are really amazing on 'Room On Fire' he's one of the best around on that form.
