hey yail, im not familiar with billy cobham. where can i hear some of his stuff?

easy answer:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll

his best stuff that ive heard is with mahavishnu orchestra; i have a live billy cobham band disc that i would say is an alleged title at best...

not to make too fine a point, but i think that what i was trying to say was that mitch mitchell is far from "amazing"; he was servicable at best....

throwing out billy cobham is like throwing out neil peart or dave weckl; its just a dick move to come over the top in a music arguement; like, "oh Yeah?, My dad can beat up your dad!

BUT, if you like fusion and some completely over the top drumming--Cobham is your guy. I like him.

Who was ray Charles' drummer?
In particular on "What I'd Say"

I'm listening to that song now, and the drumming just kicks my ass!

Any of you geeks know?

EDIT: I found it att AllMusic (God bless, 'em!)
Drummer Milt Turner lays down a magnificently complex syncopated rhythm under Charles' memorable electric piano riffs (his sinuous left-hand figure has been lifted too many times to count), front and center on an exceptionally lengthy intro that could have served as an instrumental all by itself and a 24-bar break midway through.

(Hi, I'm new and all that, and this topic will likely reveal how uncool I am . . . oh well)

Bill Bruford - come on, NO ONE mentioned Bruford?! The man is pure joy to listen to. He apparently got bored with even the very demanding playing of King Crimson (because Fripp wanted to go all-electronic with the drums, and BB has fallen back in love with his acoustic set) and went back to jazz after 30 years in rock. Check out Yes' "Close To The Edge" for some of the most astounding rock-drumming ever.

Carlinhos Brown & Tony Allen

In the rock world, J Mascis is very underrated. He's better known for his guitar work, but I'd put him high among drummers also.

my favorites, in rock anyway:

Mitch Mitchell--easily the best drummer of the 60s
Bill Bruford--I think he got one other mention
James Lo--perhaps my favorite drummer ever
Janet Weiss--other than Lo, the most fun drummer for me to listen to

Two more, for fun... (i play bass, but i hate bassists {excepting phil/epa of course}, but i love drummers and guitar players)

Jeff Sipe (nee Apartment Q258) (Aquarium Rescue Unit and numerous others)

Carter Beauford - shit on Dave Mathews all you want but this guy is really Really great and fun to listen to (just pick him out of the mix and ignore the annoying parts)

Mike Portnoy -- Dream Theater, wanker band, but technically amazing.
Martin Atkins -- "Invisible" with Ministry, Killing Joke, Pigface
Martin Lopez -- Opeth, who knew a paraguaian drummer could be so good in a swedish doom/death metal band?
Stewart Copeland -- Police
Alan Wilder -- Depeche Mode/Recoil. Seriously! So it's electronic. The guy can program like a fiend, and knows how to keep your feet moving.

and jon wurster's wfmu stuff is hilarious too, not that it has anything to do with his drumming ability.

I'm basing my pick on rock n roll lifestyle and sheer mongertude vs. technical ability.

With that in mind, Tommy Lee.

Pete Thomas (the Attractions)
Mike McBride (the Raspberries)

And I don't know the dude's name, but Echo and the Bunnymen had a spaztastic drummer back in the '80s.

Actually, a really good drummer technically and otherwise,

and spinningplates--so what who taylor hawkins has played for? we could have a LONG, LONG thread about regrettable hookups in music...and how the fuck would that matter about good/enjoyable the man is as a drummer...(oh, oops! forgot that i have to display my indie/neck beard/white belt credibility at all times)

moron.
