I would have figured, since the blast knocked-in Jeter, there would have been some measure of absolution for Alex.

Also: how much jizz will be spat when the aforementioned Captain gets hit number 3.000? (He's at 2.873, right now -- unless he had another hit or three in tonite's game -- so I expect the three thousandth to come by Memorial Day 2011. (Figure, another fifty or so hits this year, leaving him 75 or so short.))

Surprised that there isn't more draft talk going on. Pretty happy that the O's got Machado's contract in under the deadline, since from most of the articles I had read up until late-ish July, were saying there had been zero communication. Not to mention he signed for less than what Wieters signed for. Nice.

Knew the Bryce Harper deal would get done, but surprised like everyone else about it being lower than expected. Personally, I'm hoping for a start in single A here in Hagerstown, but I know he'll probably start at AA.

Finally, the Dodgers got it done as well. Zach Lee. Dang, sorry LSU fans (though I don't know that its that big of a blow). He made the right choice though. Take the money and run, kid.

The Jays just signed 14 of their top 16 picks but I don't really know anything about any of them. It was fun to see Dickie Thon Jr.'s name among them, though.

Really? Has there ever been?

Honest question.

I have no clue who the Braves draft picks are.

I thought there would be more since Bryce Harper is a big deal. Maybe I'm just out of touch because its a big deal for those of us in the cellar. I will definitely admit its less than a big deal compared to football.

That said, it is the future of the club in some circumstances. For me, its been cool watching players like Wieters come up to the bigs, even if he hasn't performed as he was expected to. Sure its early, but Machado has been compared to A-Rod--which is a loooooooong shot. But its cool to be excited about a prospect.

That's cool. There's a reason the MLB draft isn't as interesting as the NBA or NFL. For the most part, save college guys, no one outside of the towns the players come from knows who they are (Unless you're a phenom like Strasburg or Harper).

I just think that after the first few picks it's a giant crapshoot with MLB draft picks.

I mean, speaking from just the Braves point of view, the 2 biggest guys to come up in the last few years have been Jason Heyward and Tommy Hanson. The former coming in the 1st round and the latter coming in the 22nd.

You just never know.

rangers are now 3-4 in cliff lee's starts

he only really shares in the blame for two of the four losses, though

still, this is a hard cock to swallow

HS SS from Miami repped by Boras and a potential impact player thus compared to A-Rod. It seems a lazy comparison though and if A-Rod were truly the right comp, wouldn't he go #1 overall?

Saw this earlier today and thought you and shmoo might be interested:

http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/8/1 ... top-20-pre

I get excited by the MLB draft too and enjoy reading about the Yankees farm system more than about the ML club. Yankees signed 29 of their draft picks including their top 13. Not many big names but they did draft a number of tough signs who they paid over slot for and generally went for more athletic HS guys than they used to and continued drafting high ceiling power arms. They've had a bunch of prospects have big years this summer so I'm pretty excited to see which ones eventually make it up to the bigs.

Like I said above, its a long shot.

Thanks for the head's up on the site. I haven't checked in at camdenchat.com today, but they probably have it posted there as well. There is some debate among O's fans as to whether Machado becomes the O's top prospect over Britton. Personally, I think Britton is a bigger prospect for us. I really feel like our farm system is cranking out some great pitching talent (see Arrieta, Matusz). I'm still not going to sell out Erbe or Hobgood though. As the site says, they weren't exactly spectacular this year but they're young. If Bergesen can get his stuff back (and that's a big IF), we'll have a pretty decent rotation that is capable of winning games when they have run support.

Giants fading like the velocity on a Tim Lincecum fastball.

Haha. The Braves have continued to have success despite being a MASH unit the last few weeks. We could use some help for chrissakes. STEP UP GIANTS.

Also, Cubs fans, tell me about Derrek Lee. Is he fading fast or worth a shit?

Word is that he may be traded to the Braves any day now. We need another bat bad but the prospect of moving Troy Glaus back to third makes me shudder.

Lee has been pretty awful this year, no doubt, but I still think he can play. Take his numbers from just last year, for example. .306/.393/.972 with 35 HR and 111 RBIs. Our entire roster has been horse shit this year, so I don't judge Lee's performance this year too harshly. He's still very good with the glove, and if I remember correctly, his contract is over this year. If you don't give up much for him, which I suspect you wouldn't, I'd be excited.

there's still plenty of people in Philly who still won't shut up about how we should've kept Lee.

I will admit to being a bit nervous going into the series last weekend. Should have been a sweep.

What I meant to say is, it should have been a Padres sweep of the Giants. Just to clarify. :rawk:

Could Felix win the Cy Young with less than 12 wins and/or a sub-.500 record? Made the Yanks look silly tonight.
