On Sunday nights in the late 80's and early 90's?
A freaking great show!
I've already posted this clip before: Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bongwater, and Bob Weir playing a Roky Erickson song.

But here's another great performance:

I couldn't find the show at Amazon. Does anyone know if it's available at all? I would love to have some of those old shows on DVD. So great.

So, let's make this a thread where we post some great performances from that old show.
This'll be fun!

No, network TV. I think it was NBC, actually.
And it was only on for a couple of years.

I would imagine its probably not on DVD due to licensing issues. I don't remember it either. Seems like a pretty cool, and diverse music show.

*edit* Thanks, wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Music

Lorne Michaels produced.

Quote:
Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was a late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and electric musical artists.[1] It was hosted by Jools Holland and David Sanborn, and featured Marcus Miller as musical director. Guests included acts such as Sonny Rollins, Shinehead, Sister Carol, Sonic Youth, Joe Sample, Slim Gaillard, Pere Ubu, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. In addition, vintage clips of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday were also featured. The show also featured a house band of Omar Hakim (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), Philippe Saisse (keys), David Sanborn (sax), Hiram Bullock (guitar), and Jools Holland (piano). The show often allowed its guests ample time to explain the origins of their sound, meaning of songs, etc. It also provided a national audience for lesser known acts (like Arto Lindsay's band The Ambitious Lovers). Hal Willner was the music coordinator, responsible for the interesting musical mix-and-matching that took place on the show.

It was great for stuff like that. Maybe the greatest music show ever aired on network TV. Certainly the most-ambitious.

I'm going to have to look up shows on youtube and google video. Besides the 2 that you posted, have you come across others? I'd really like to see the Sonic Youth one.

Also did a great version of "Hey Joe" with Toots Thielmans on harmonica, in that same episode.

Coincidentally saw this one yesterday while looking for Stooges doing "I Wanna Be Your Dog", but didn't know of Night Music at the time

Also, that is an exemplary mullet on the Pere Ubu bassist, and god what an awful fucking song that just REEEEKS of 80s production.

Yes! I've seen some clips from this show while browsing around Youtube searching for live clips by certain artists. I've seen that Pere Ubu one before and I forget what other ones.

Here's the Pharoah Sanders one:

I have a load of these shows on video cassettes. Lot of good that does me. :wanker:

My favorite was Artis The Spoonman. Incredible accoustics for that one- the volume was so low, you could hear fans rumbling through the building.

Edit: And Himram fucking Bullock on guitar. RIP. :(
