I liked about half of her album but I agree a little with Dale in that maybe the whole sci fi android thing might be considered a gimmick because it didn't do anything for me. I think that there is a sense of somewhat forced quirkiness, but I think she has a lot of potential so I'm looking forward to what she does next.

That wouldn't really make it a gimmick, but if she does have a gimmick, I don't think that's it. It doesn't really carry over fully into the image she's put forward, anyway. I mean, where is all that in the "Tightrope" video? That seems like something totally different.

Now this could possibly be a gimmick, but I don't think so. She's "trying too hard", if anything, to stand out, to make "art". But I think of a gimmick as something far more superficial than that. She's sincere in what she does. She's really interested in these things, and she's doing what she wants to do.

Is eclecticism a gimmick? If it's clearly tossed-off, I suppose it could be, but I think she makes a genuine effort to excel in every style she explores. Even if she fails - which she does occasionally - that doesn't make that a "gimmick".

Yeah, I don't think that gimmick was the right word to use. I do get the feeling that she tries to be quirky to be quirky, but I suppose it's hard to really say. I could do without the concept album bit, but it wasn't that detracting from the album.

The concept doesn't even seem to carry over into a lot of the songs. Like if you heard them out of context you'd never guess that they came off of an album with an overarching "sci-fi" theme. Take "Tightrope", for example, which also isn't really weird or quirky at all.

And, if we're splitting hairs, also isn't that much of a song.

Want to split hairs? Tell me how you define how "much of a song" something is.

I guess I don't, but it seems that way from an interview or two I've seen and just from the stuff she's put out.

Why assume otherwise? I'd think that would require more "proof". To assume that she's disingenuous, that she has a "gimmick". I'd think that would merit a little more information to back it up, but I've seen none. Just people saying "I don't like her", therefore saying she's gimmicky.

Or just keep taking me to task for defending her, please. This is great. I love how this place has been lately.

Given the other pathetic shit clogging up the pop charts why is she and everyone else connected with this act even being debated?

man, you're touchy lately. are you missing radcliffe? :D

i never said she's gimmicky. i enjoy a few of her songs but don't think the album is all that great but i'd like to hear what she does in the future.

I know you weren't saying that, but it seemed a little unnecessary for you to try to call me out on that statement.

Maybe I am touchy, but then it seems like every other thing I post is getting under someone's skin and getting picked apart.

That was just me being a bit too literal about the post I suppose. I didn't even think about that you read an interview.

And have you forgotten this is obner? Toots can't even cook a burger without getting ripped to shreds.
