I know there's already a thread for the EP, but figured now that the LP is out, it deserves it's own thread.

Just gave it my first listen, and it is GREAT. Possible #1, definite top 5 for 2010.

"Swollen But Not The Same" is particularly epic.

I've got it up next, after the new J.T. Earle, which, on the first listen, sounds OK, but a bit phoned in.

Jesus, Bobbo, you are correct. This shit is fine. The instrumental break in "Swollen But Not The Same" is conjuring up something primeval, maybe like The Second Coming (the predecessor to Allman Bros Band). Fucking guitar is just screaming straight up out of the song.

Thank ya kindly. I looked directly at that album a half dozen times and didn't realize it was the new BBJ

Apparently MMJ is Bobby's backing on this save for Yim Yames.

When he turns it loose, Carl Broemer's guitar playing is nothing short of fucking inspired, to my old ears, anyway.

Speaking of which :

Carl Broemel – All Birds Say (2010) 320kbps | 96MB
Image

My Morning Jacket guitarist Broemel steps out solo on this wistful, winning collection of breezy, artful folk/pop -- think George Harrison's whimsical, spiritual sincerity (and guitar lines) hitched to introspective, earnest indie songwriters Ron Sexsmith and Andrew Bird. Broemel reflects a things as they are with zen-like contentment, making no judgment on how they should be...he gives pause for introspection but stops short of preaching, The songs are firmly planted between past and present. It's in these little fractured moments that the listener bears witness to thoughtful contemplation that give rise to epiphanies on larger themes.
Deft in its presentation, the songs on the album unfold in a dream-like stream of consciousness with lush and elegant arrangements. The album's brilliance is displayed in Broemel's effortless delivery. It's the perfect amalgamation of lazy sophistication...whimsical poise and grace. The instrumentation serves as the ideal complement to the Broemel's well crafted set of modern-folk standards; complete with pedal steel, dobro, strings, autoharp, clarinet, bassoon, vibraphone, and a baritone sax, among others. Think Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Neal Casal, Andrew Bird, Mose Allison, and early Boz Scaggs singing an orchestrated chorus of breezy ballads and waltzes.
The best records always seem to be the ones that slowly reveal themselves like a pleasant surprise and allow the listener to peel through deep layers upon repeated listen...the kind of records that you grow with and can go back to months later and hear something then that resonates with you in a way that wouldn't have otherwise. It's an interactive process between the listener and the artist, and one to be thankful for. This is the kind of album that epitomizes the vinyl experience; an instant classic that is sure to stand the test of time.

Nice. Mcap coming through with a double to left center.

Had this in my hand last weekend and didn't pull the trigger.

Had I known you fuckers would drool over this, I would've posted it up weeks ago. Missed opportunity for glory. I'm ashamed.

Glad I could provide the BBjr link though, and yes, it's fucking killer album. Bobby's songs are great, but the MMJ backing band take it to another level. For the record, Pat and Carl played on his last, The Longest Meow, as well. I'll be seeing him Saturday night.

Don't fret, Stu - it was posted a while ago in the TwentyTen thread, just nobody seemed to notice.

I loved that album, too. Thought it was his best, before this one, which is obviously his masterwork.

I wasn't too big on The Longest Meow...In fact, I thought it sort of sucked, but this new one is pretty great at least after a couple of listens.

I remember liking "The Heart Bionic" and not so much the rest of the album. Wasn't Jim James on that one too?

Yeah, Jim played some harmonica and sang back-up on a few Longest Meow tracks. I,for the record, absolutely LOVE that record.

Also, this is his first record since his Bare Jr days to be credited to Bobby Bare Jr, and not Bobby Bare Jr's Young Criminals Starvation League.

Don't forget David Vandervelde's part in the new record either. He's been a constant collaborator with BBjr since moving to Nashville a little while back.

Oh, and wait until Rock n' Roll Halloween gets its hooks into you. I've been singing that damn song in my head for the last 2 weeks.

ATL peeps, go see the Bobby Bare Jr/Blue Giant show on 9/21 at The Earl. They were both incredible last night. Blue Giant turned out to be a much, for the lack of a better adjective, jammier band than they present themselves as on their debut. Anita Robinson from Blue Giant is an adequate guitar player, but considering she's a cutie, when she's playing Carl Broemel's guitar parts she is turned into a guitar goddess
Blue Giant acts at BBjr's backing band on this tour.
