On my 3rd spin of this and I can't believe I slept on this for so long. I was a bit meh on it the first spin but I was the same way with Marquee Moon. Both take time to digest and pick up on the little bits and pieces going on. This isn't quite Marquee Moon but it's not far behind.

You know for some reason I've never bought that album, but I know I should. I did listen to it once and thought it was much better than I had been led to believe.

Today:

Caetano Veloso - Cinema Transcendental
Pentangle - Cruel Sister
Tim Buckley - s/t
Richard Thompson - Mock Tudor
Sun Kil Moon - April
Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs

It's a good enough album if you're not expecting another Marquee Moon but I really disagree that it's not far behind. Marquee Moon is one of the twenty or so albums that move in and out of my top 5-10 albums. Adventure is merely a good listen worth owning. I actually like the 1992 self titled comeback album more than Adventure, but that one isn't close to being an equal to Marquee Moon either.

Seaworthy + Matt Rosner - Two Lakes

btw--this isn't the midwest band, or the Josh McKay side-project. Its a guy named Cameron Webb's ambient project named Seaworthy.

Abe Vigoda - Crush
Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
No Age - Everything in Between
Women - Public Strain

So I bought all four of these this past Tuesday on their release date. It's been a long time since I've done something like that. It was a good feeling. (I also picked up the new Swans which came out last week.) This was my second time listening to all of them.

All four of them are good. However, I'm not all that impressed with the Deerhunter and No Age albums. For all the hype and praise, they just seem fairly ordinary. Not bad, just not exciting. At first I was really put off by the direction Abe Vigoda went with their new album because it makes them sound like a bunch of other bands do right now, but I think it's starting to grow on me. In fact, I'm pretty sure I like it more than Deerhunter and No Age. That Women album is just great. I'm really, really loving it so far.

See, I've always been a so-so fan of Deerhunter, so I think when I did hear the new record I wasn't expecting much. I'm not blown away, but I'm pleasantly pleased with it. Still haven't heard No Age, but really like them, so I'm hoping for another great record.

Best Buy has both No Age and Deerhunter for $7.99 btw.

Yeah, I paid a lot more than that for them, but I kind of don't mind. If a good record store actually has all of the stuff I'm looking for on the day of its release, then they've earned my money.

And just FYI, it wasn't Criminal Records.
