Quote:
Rebound's David Bowie is essentially a straight-up reissue of the endlessly reissued David Bowie (Love You Till Tuesday) album. There are no bonus tracks, since Mercury had just issued the extensive 27-track The Deram Anthology in 1997, which contained all of Bowie's recordings for the label. This is just the album itself, containing such cult classics as "Uncle Arthur," "Rubber Band," "Sell Me a Coat," "Love You Till Tuesday," "Come and Buy My Toys," "Join the Gang," and "Please Mr. Gravedigger." Curious fans looking for a taste of these Anthony Newley-esque music hall shenanigans may be tempted by the budget price on this disc, but any fan truly interested in this material should spring for the full Deram Anthology, since it not only contains his best song of this era ("London Boys"), it also contains the notorious "Laughing Gnome," plus such unsung vaudevillian novelties as "The Gospel According to Tony Day" and an early take of "Space Oddity." If you're gonna dip your toe in water this cold, you'd be better off diving headfirst into the deep end.

I've never heard any of these early albums and the phrase 'unsung vaudevillian novelties' sounds like something OPA! would recommend.

Another in our Ill-conceived listening threads. Thought this might draw more audience participation. I think ive only ever heard 3 full Bowie albums: Ziggy, Alladin Sane and Low, but have always beea sucker for his singles.

Whoa, you've never heard Hunky Dory? You will like that one a lot. I'm the same way though, there's a bunch of his albums I've never heard. I've heard terrible things about David Live so naturally I'm stoked to hear it.

I've annoyed a few Bowie fans by saying I pretty much only like the singles, but Hunky Dory was the first album to grab me as a full album and I'm starting to like a few others. I may indulge in this thread.

I'm game. DLing now.

*edit* track 12 is 0:00 long. Also, they aren't labeled and for some reason it won't let me change their ID3 tags to identify artist/album. Anyone else having this problem?

This looks like fun. Guess I'll try to keep up.

Surprised you guys haven't tackled Neil Young yet.

I think either Neil or Van Morrison is on deck.

Neil seems like a much more daunting undertaking than Van. Maybe I'm underestimating the size of VM's catalog, but that one seems pretty manageable. (As does Bowie.)

Link, please?

Guess I could Google it myself, but if you get that one to work and it seems to be good quality, I'd prefer to hear it, too.

I'm a Bowie fan and there's not a lot of his stuff Ive not listened to at one point or an other, but I really do think all I've heard of his early work is pretty much crap.

That's the right word for it.

I'm on track 7 and only morbid fascination for what's next is keeping me going. It's like Glen Campbell went to a Medieval Fair, met thee fine maiden Tanya Tucker and decided to sing about dragons.

Gar, if you're playing this in the office people are gonna think you've lost your fucking mind.

I suspect after 187 Grateful Dead bootlegs and a month of Dylan's goat-bleatings that fact has been well established.

I hope this thread brings a few more people over to my side of the fence about Bowie. And no way am I joining in.

Yeah, I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it all the way through 2 discs of this. Ei yi yi.

Thoughts so far:

"Sell Me A Coat" will probably be in my head all day, because of its repetitive lyrics that just flow really well.

"Rubber Band" could've been a Burt Bacharach song. Those strings and horns.

"Love You Til Tuesday" isn't a horrible song, and while I'm not really into this flowery era music, its not bad.

"When I Live My Dream" feels like it should be from a musical. He's really showboating vocally on this one. I can just picture a lone spotlight on him for this one.

"Little Bombadier". Please shoot me right now. Seriously.

"Silly Boy Blue" could be a song in a later incarnation Bowie, minus the squeaks and squawks during the lalala's. It kinda reminds me of some of the deep tracks on his 80s records.
