What do you think of this? I still haven't fully gotten over my initial disappointment, but it has grown on me a lot. The title track is really good.

this was only my first listen but i thought it was decent. did they change their sound a lot? i think i only gave their debut one spin and decided i didn't like it. this one starts off just ok but there's a couple of great songs in the middle and it maybe trails off a little towards the end. i'll be checking it out again though.

Yeah, prior to this they didn't have this retro-'80s/Cure/synth sound at all. It was noisy, knotty punk. "Tropical punk". The EP between Skeleton and this kind of bridges the gap, but I didn't expect them to adopt this kind of sound.

What basically happened, I guess, is that they got a different drummer.

And this is actually their fourth album. I've never heard their first one, but I downloaded it a few days ago. Their 2nd one is really primitive and chaotic. I like it.

What do you think of this. I've never heard the album but am a big Charles Lloyd fan and recently saw him perform live with the same band he recorded this with.

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Collosus

I've not really connected with many jazz records this year, but this was immediate. It's just stunning. I love these slow moving ballads and the band sound excellent especially Moran, i need to delve into some of his records as well as going back through Lloyd's catalouge.

I remember you mentioning a jazz gig recently, was that the one that Sanders showed up to? If so, that's awesome. They're playing the London Jazz festival in November, a double bill with Norma Winstone, which would be quite a show. I have to try and make it.

Cool. I'll have to check it out then. I went to McCoy Tyner recently too but it was the Charles Lloyd show where I saw Pharoah Sanders picking up tickets. Agreed about the band being excellent. I liked the drummer as much or maybe even more than Moran. It's harder for me to distinguish between bassists but the bassist sounded fine and his resume is certainly pretty strong as well.

Today's listening:

Loudon Wainwright III - Career Moves
Lebron Brothers - Psychedelic Goes Latin/Brooklyn Bums
Eddie Hinton - Very Extremely Dangerous
Joe Williams - A Swingin' Night at Birdland
John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band

Hard to believe I bought this the same day in late 2000 as I did Wyclef's Ecleftic, Dead Prez's Let's Be Free (is that the title? All I know, I sold it back), & Koufax's It Had to Do with Love.
