i get 3 or 4 emails to rejoin every month sent to my multiple old accounts. i get 50 free plus 24 for a total of $12 so that isnt bad, and ill probably do it once every other month. I cancel right away, twice ive even had them give me 25 DL immediately just to not cancel, after which i cancel anyway.

$0.40+ per download is a little too much for what i want from emusic.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I do.

I actually just tried to cancel one of my accounts after burning through the 50 free downloads they just gave out, but they offered to give me the next month free is I stayed on. So I've still got two accounts and I've gotten over 200 free credits over the past two months.

So, uh, maybe it's my fault they raised their prices...

I have multiple accounts as well and cancel one and re-start another when they offer me a deal.

Last week, they sent me an email that if I rated 10 albums, I'll get 10 free dls.

The new Sunny Day in Glasgow is 22 credits on emusic. Ugh. At least 10 of the tracks are less than a minute.

interesting. the only downside is possibly losing the "unlimited download of the same music" as a content-backup plan, but nothing a few dvd-r's can't solve. i might have to try this.

yeah now they give 75 free, so I spend $16 to download 75+35 and then cancel after which they always offer a month free so add another 35...ends up being 11c per mp3. i can get behind that and at least support the industry blah blah blah not feel like a TOTAL sleazebag

Well, they've done it now...

Quote:
Mark your calendars because in November 2010, eMusic is adding more than 250,000 tracks from Universal Music Group to its catalog, the single largest addition ever!

This addition comes as part of our mission to offer members a rich catalog that is both deep and broad, with every day low prices that make music discovery as affordable as it is rewarding.

In order to continue to grow our catalog and to insure a sustainable business in the long-term, we need more flexible pricing. So we are changing from a credit-per-track system to currency pricing. Starting in November, you'll see tracks and albums priced in dollars and cents instead of credits.

Your membership will continue just as it is today, and your monthly payments will not change. While some popular tracks will be more expensive, members will still enjoy savings of 20% - 50% compared to iTunes a la carte prices.

For more details about these changes, including the new catalog, new currency pricing, and how this affects your account, please read the full announcement.

Quote:
The new pricing in detail

Our commitment to offer a consistent savings
With the new pricing system, you will see a wider range of prices, with some tracks costing more and some less than the effective price you pay today. Over all however, eMusic members will consistently be able to enjoy savings of 20% - 50% compared to iTunes a la carte prices.

Album prices
With your eMusic membership, you’ll get the biggest savings on albums released a year or more ago. Generally, albums released more than 12 months ago will be available at a 35% savings compared to iTunes a la carte prices. More recent releases will be priced 25% less than iTunes a la carte prices. For example: an album that sells at retail for $9.99 will sell for $7.49 on eMusic.

Track prices
Most of the single tracks in our current catalog will be available to members at $.49 which is generally 50% less than iTunes a la carte prices. The price of more popular individual tracks in our current catalog could be $0.69 or $0.79. Single tracks released within the last 12 months will be available for either $0.79 or $.89.

You’re probably curious what the prices will be for specific titles in our current and future catalog. Prices offered to members will largely be driven by release date and label requirements. All of that is still being determined and we won’t know specifics until we get closer to the launch date. As soon as we know more, we’ll share the details.

No way is this a good move. I'll give it one month to see if it's really as bad as it looks, but I think they're going to be losing members in droves. A subscription service that's only slightly cheaper than iTunes and offers no rollover at the end of the months (use it or lose it) is not a good deal at all.

I'm not an emusic subscriber so perhaps I'm mistaken but, other than the rollover, isn't this the same as before. Maybe now it's explicit in what you're paying for each track, but that's basically what the credits were, right?

I'm not a subscriber anymore either but I take it that its not a flat # of songs you can dl monthly anymore for a monthly subscription price, but now a subscription fee which your dls (priced per album only slightly below itunes pricing) are credited against. It would seem that your price per song would go up substantially. Why bother paying a subscription fee at all and commit to downloading a certain amount per month without more benefit than a small discount?

I was gonna bump this thread, but figured I'd let someone else. So, after all my ranting the past couple of times, I've maintained my membership. I've put it on hold a few times when I was really crazy about releases. This is definitely the death knell. This makes them no different than any of the other "undercut" itunes providers such as Amie Street. As I wrote on the survey, they've lost sight of the thing that made a lot of us members in the first place--we love music, love exploring and love finding new music. While emusic hasn't gotten rid of independent labels, they don't put the emphasis on them as much as they did in the past. When I'm greeted on the front page to explore Jimi Hendrix's discography, the tides have surely turned. One of the great things about my subscription was that I could get 4-5 albums a month. Now, I'm sure it'll be closer to 2-3. If I buy mp3s direct from the label of a band, I'm not sure that emusic is going to undercut that.

I am subscribed to the Canadian "eMusic Connoisseur" plan for $29.99, which lets me download 100 tracks a month. The new pricing scheme will give me a bonus of $19.01 for a total of $49.00. If I focus on the 49 cent songs I could download as much as I did before, but I imagine it'll be hard to stick to the cheap tracks exclusively.

It looks like with my subscription I'll be getting around $23. If it sticks to .49 a track (and thats not guaranteed, nor is how long that "extra" credit money will be added), I'll get 4-5 less songs a month. However, it'll be interesting to see the average price of tracks. The wording is kinda weird too on the pricing of albums. It breaks it down by complete album: "$5.19 - $8.99" or their per track price:
Quote:
$this->bbcode_list('3')$0.49 for most tracks currently in our catalog
$0.69 - $0.79 for more popular content
$0.89 for tracks that generally sell for $1.29 at iTunes

So if an album hits the top 10, I wonder if it automatically starts selling for more.

I think I'll be getting screwed a lot worse than you guys. I believe I'll be losing roughly a third of my downloads, but I'm on one of the cheaper plans.

Think about this: you will most likely, regularly end up with and unusable dollar amount left over each month, like say $.32, that you won't even be able to use on a single download. Or did I miss something somewhere where they account for that?

Nope. I believe that may well be the point.

I've stuck with them through the other price changes as well but I'm done now. With Amazon offering 100 albums a month at $5 a pop and a special deal everyday, I'll just be getting my music that way from now on. I don't think eMusic will be surviving this one.
