That Warpaint is really great. I really dig "Bees" and "Majesty", the latter kinda having a Cure groove to it. Going to order the LP. Thanks for the heads up.

Warpaint - The Fool - 2010

Warpaint is an all-girl quartet from Los Angeles. They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between the soundscapes of psychedelia and intimacy.

Debut full-length from this Rising L.A. desert-rock band. Produced by Tom Biller (Liars, Karen O), with mixing by rave legend Andrew Weatherall.

Tracklist:

01 Set Your Arms Down
02 Warpaint
03 Undertow
04 Bees
05 Shadows
06 Composure
07 Baby
08 Majesty
09 Lissie’s Heart Murmur

I just picked up his first solo album, and am really digging it. Looking forward to hearing this one. How are you liking it?

I'm on the fence with that Warpaint album. There are some instrumental parts that sound pretty cool, especially the bass and drums. But for the most part it's god awful.

Not sure i'd call that on the fence but maybe those instrumental bits are really cool.

I was trying to figure that out myself.

Yeah, it didn't make sense to me either but I went with it. Maybe it is because I want to like it.

or maybe it's because other of you claimed that it's better than it is. really not very exciting, though it has moments. many of these releases in this vein make me pine for a new gang gang dance record.

i think it's a very subtle record, with beautiful vocals and instruments. simple, gentle for the most part. love it.

agreed, dale. everything they do works for me.

i think their sublety is way more effective than what autolux tried to do on many tracks on their record, which really didn't hit the spot for me.

Dalen posted this back in august and judging by the lack of obnerds talking about it, I'm afraid a true gem has fallen through the cracks. This record is :rawk: !!!!

I'll repost it in V0, as the old link is dead now. If you dig the 80's sound that bands like Wild Nothing are rocking right now, then this is RIGHT up your ally. I'm not saying they sound like Wild Nothing, but their sound belongs to the same era. Actually, the dudes voice reminds me of Morrissey.

Engineers - In Praise Of More

Three Fact Fader, Engineers’ second album was released last year on Kscope to widespread critical acclaim. The band now return with In Praise of More, their new album and their first with their new line-up.Mark Peters has moved to guitar and has been replaced by Daniel Land on bass and Matthew Linley has joined on drums. In addition to this respected solo artist Ulrich Schnauss, who had previously played keyboards live with the band has joined as full time member.

Although the majority of the songs on In Praise of More were recorded by Mark, with the assistance of Dave Potter, Ulrich was on hand to offer advice and point out ways to make what were essentially home recordings sound as stately and elegant as they do. Taking in everything from the synth-heavy krautpop of To An Evergreen to the autumnal acoustic folk of There Will Be Time and the wintery piano instrumental Nach Hause, the album strips back the layers of sound that characterised the band’s previous releases, but remains just as powerful. One of the highlights, the beautifully understated Twenty Paces, which blends The Blue Nile with almost jazz-like rhythms, is the first track that Mark and Ulrich co-produced.

The 2CD set also features an instrumental version of the album and is available from the Kscope store now.

KT Tunstall - Tiger Suit

Image

Third album from this feisty Scottish singer-songwriter pushes production, emphasizing beats, plush soundscapes and multi-tracked vocals. Sounding more like a band than a solo artist, at times intimacy and individuality get squeezed between glam guitars and dance grooves. Tunstall’s voice, encompassing a huge range of tones, from hoarse to sweet, saves the day.
