Yeah, we didn't even address this gem from a few days ago.

Pat McAfee, lol

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101020/ap_ ... r_arrested

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee was arrested for public intoxication after he reportedly took a pre-dawn swim in a canal in a nightlife district.

Police arrested McAfee about 5 a.m. Wednesday in the Broad Ripple neighborhood and took him to an arrest processing center.

Officers say the 23-year-old, second-year player from West Virginia had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 — nearly twice the level to be considered legally intoxicated.

Colts President Bill Polian said in a statement that the team is aware that McAfee was arrested.

"We are in the process of gathering the relevant facts," Polian said. "When that task is complete, we will deal immediately with the issue of club discipline. Until we complete that process, we will have no further comment."

Officers asked McAfee if he had been swimming in the canal and he said "I am not sure," according to a police report. They asked him how he got wet and he said it had been raining, then told officers that his shirt was "in the water."

Police asked McAfee how much he had to drink.

"A lot cause I am drunk," McAfee said, according to the report.

Anybody else find these "big hit" fines and general reaction by the NFL a bit knee jerk and foolish?

I've watched Dunta Robinson's hit on DeSean Jackson a half dozen times and can still see no wrong doing. It was a bang bang play and he was leading with his pads.

How do they plan to enforce these rules subjectively?

Last year, concussions, this year big hits. All while trying to push through an 18 game season?

They're heading for a lockout plain and simple.

I think they are foolish for trying to go for an 18 game season, but they certainly need to enforce some sort of regulation in regards to leading with the head on tackles and using your helmet as a weapon.
Concussions and concussion related disorders are clearly an issue that all contact sports now have to consider for the overall health of their athletes once they retire, and the issue with big hits seems to revolve around the fact that you don't want star receivers being knocked out of games or have your premier defenders resort to using their heads rather than actually tackling someone, especially when it may result in them becoming paralyzed.

I don't think that assessing the fines or suspensions after the game will be a big issues, the main problem I have with rules like this is that they are rarely calling these penalties in a fair or uniform manner on the field of play. A legal, textbook tackle can get flagged for helmet to helmet contact due to the offensive player leading with his helmet rather than the defender, but you are rarely going to see an NFL referee flag any offensive player for that act.
I'd like to see them focus on a return to fundamental play rather than suspending or fining a first time offender for a dirty hit, and to try to clean up the play of some of the heavy hitters/allegedly dirty players before they institute a more severe penalty system for illegal contact to the head on tackles.

All they need to be sure and do if they expand to 18 games is to also expand the rosters accordingly.

They might as well start playing flag football or have the in the grasp rule apply to everyone.

Hard hitting is meant to separate the receiver from the ball and requiring the defense to not be as aggressive will end up costing them big plays.

I think even you would have to admit that there is a difference between spearing a guy with the crown of your helmet and/or head hunting a receiver and blowing up a receiver by sticking a helmet on the ball or lighting him up from behind as he attempts to catch the ball.
I don't usually hear or read too many complaints about the NCAA rule in regards to these things, and they have already suspended players for flagrant hits, so I'm not sure why so many people get up in arms about the NFL doing the same thing
I haven't really seen much difference in the level of play or increased frequency of big play touchdowns due to new Defenseless player rules, so it is pretty asinine to say they are approaching anything near flag football.
The only thing I'd personally complain about the NFL is the coddling of the QB in regards to safety rules, and most people seem to agree that those rules are in place to preserve the high quality of offensive play.

It should be noted that this was to be a point of emphasis heading into the NFL Season this year.

Also James Harrison is threatening to retire due to the fine and his alleged inability to play by the rules.

It can get very subjective to define what makes a hit too violent and what was unintentional.
It's going to turn into flag football soon.

Then I'm getting drafted. Late fourth round.

The 2nd half of this Bengals/Falcs game has been completely nuts.

i've been watching nfl football for 30+ years. i don't think i've once been as pissed off as i am now. can anyone who watched the miami/pitt game tell me that was not complete and utter bullshit?

it can not be underestimated how crucial that game was for miami even at this early stage of the season.

shenanigans:

Quote:
Referee Gene Steratore spoke to the pool reporter about today's controversial call that was the difference in score between the Dolphins and Pittsburgh. The Steelers won, 23-22 on a field goal made possible when they kept the football following what looked like a fumble in the end zone that was recovered by Miami's Ikaika Alama-Francis.

The refs initially called the play a TD. Then they overturned the TD and said it was a fumble. But they didn't complete the job by giving the ball to Miami.

"Naturally, the ruling on the field was a touchdown by Pittsburgh," Steratore said. "After review it was confirmed in replay the ball did come loose and it was a fumble prior to the ball breaking the goal line. That's where we go into the second aspect of that. In order to overturn this and give another team the football, I have to have clear video evidence of that team recovering the fumble. So when a little short segment of what I said out there. That is what I explained. We did have a fumble, but we did not have video evidence and a confirmation on who recovered the football so we changed an aspect of the play by not awarding Pittsburgh the touchdown. Miami is not charged a time out because we changed an aspect of that play, but we could not award the defense in this situation the football because we don't have video evidence of the defense recovering the ball."

Steratore said officials could not determine who recovered the ball because, "it is a pile of bodies in there and you don't have a clear recovery."

Asked again by he could not determine who recovered the ball, he said, "We confirmed that there was a fumble and we not able to confirm a clear recovery by the defense."

Steratore, by the way, was born in Washington, PA., which is 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. He still lives and has a business in the region.

this one is going to sting for a while.

On a different note...have you checked the Hey Wiscobners thread yet. I'm fairly certain you hung out with my dad and Aunt last week in GB.

Also, I think I wanted the Dolphins to win just as badly as you guys did.
