Download the Ultimate Halloween Mixtape

Music critic Christopher Weingarten is so over witch house, the gloomy lo-fi genre featuring many bands with vexing spellings: oOoOO, †‡†, /// /\/\/\ \\\. So he assembled this mercurial-but-not-pretentious mixtape that can easily double as your Halloween-party soundtrack.

Witch House and Chillwave are the two most obnoxious and retarded genres since IDM.

aside from some early Four Tet cuts, I predominantly use IDM to fall asleep.

I don't see why you'd have any problem falling asleep to early Four Tet, or any other Four Tet.

Looks like a pretty crappy selection of music, unlike this mix of awesomeness right here...

John Carpenter's frequent soundtrack collaborator embraces the darkness in advance of Halloween.

You may not know the name Alan Howarth, but you'll surely have heard his music before. He's been involved with the sound design of movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist and all of the Star Trek movies. Some of his finest work, though, has come in collaboration with John Carpenter, whose soundtrack to Escape from New York has been beloved, rinsed and re-edited by countless DJs. Renowned for his murky and unstable atmospheres, Howarth's work is perfect for this time of year, which is exactly why we asked him to delve into his archives to provide a special Halloween mix in honor of his performances at this year's Unsound festival.

Definitely. The video of his "rant" from the 140 conference was pretty bad.

I like that he's passionate about listening to as much stuff as possible, sharing what he sees and hears, and as frequently as possible challenging the indie/blogosphere dogma and hivemind. I frequently disagree with him and have enjoyed arguing with him about stuff the few times we've hung out, times where he's never been anything but cool and good-hearted.
