Figured I'd put this here as opposed to NHL thread:

Pro skater Vallely loses fight, breaks arm in hockey debut

I have a lot of respect for the guy. At one point, he was my favorite skater. Still, he's a hothead and I completely wouldn't expect anything less than a fight in his debut.

In addition, Comcast-Spectacor is allowing fans one-last opportunity to go inside the Spectrum on Saturday, November 6 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for a “If You Can Carry It, You Can Keep It” event. Admission is $25 which includes a commemorative Spectrum crystal, as well as the opportunity to go onto the arena floor and take home a personal souvenir of the Spectrum.

this just screams "good idea"

They let some people go at work - workforce reduction and all that - and on this floor it means just one lady, the one across the hall who made personal calls all day at top volume and laughed like Danny Devito playing The Penguin. She came in to say goodbye (awkward) and said "well I guess you'll really miss me making all that racket over there every day HUH?" ... even more awkward.

I'm really sorry you got let go but now please go home.

Not only is SLC the most beautiful place to be, all of Utah is pretty amazing. Take a 4 hour drive southeast and you're in Canyonlands or Arches National Park. About the same drive southwest and you're in Zion National Park or Bryce Canyon. The most amazingly beautiful parks in the country, in my opinion. The Wasatch National Forest and surrounding areas are where you ski and hike and they're also amazing. August is wildflower season and you won't wanna miss it. Moose are right in front of you on the trail and there are high altitude lakes to sit and stare at for hours if that's your thing. Yeah, I'd move there in a heartbeat. The beer and liquor laws suck though. Beer has to be 3% abv or something, although you can buy regular beer, it's just really spendy and you have to go to different stores for beer, wine, and liquor. It's totally doable though.

Yeah, I've managed to work around those liquor laws just fine. The hassles are actually quite exaggerated--it's really not that bad.

I've only spent a few days there but I could not believe how much that place seems to be run by the church. Plus, I tried going to a couple bars and they wanted me to buy a membership or some shit. Yeah, I'm gonna pay for the privilege of buying drinks in your establishment. No offense to those on this board who live there, but while the scenery is great, I don't have a desire to go back.

Those ridiculous "memberships" have been abolished as of a year ago.

From Rhino:

We were dusting off the shelves here at the Rhino HQ and stumbled across a few boxes of limited-edition releases like Devo's RECOMBO DNA, Dionne Warwick's VERY DIONNE, Tower of Power's DINOSAUR TRACKS and more. We want to give you the chance to get your hands on these highly-coveted goods, so we're putting these select titles on sale at 40% off for next three days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) only. Now is the time to fill in those pesky gaps in your Handmade collection. Shop Rhino Handmade and shop fast - these select titles are in limited supply and are guaranteed to go faster than the weekend.

The "more" appears to be Linda Thompson's ONE CLEAR MOMENT, Jackie Deshannon's JACKIE.... PLUS, and BEST FOOT FORWARD OST.

Good deal. Was that just a way the places were run or a regulation?

Nice.

The Utah Opera is based in the Capitol Theatre which is in the middle of downtown SLC. Plenty of hotels in that area of various price ranges.

As for what to do in a day? When will you be here? What do you like to do? Most of the best stuff to do here (IMO, at least) are the outdoor activities--mtn biking, hiking, skiing. The mountains and Park City are a 1/2 drive from downtown.

Since the Olympics were here a few years back the number of good restaurants, bars and concert venues have increased significantly. It's no NYC or Chicago, but it's not terrible.

I can give you more specifics if you want. Just let me know what you're looking to do.
