Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?) Doc to Premiere Sept. 10

On Sept. 10, Lorber Films will debut its latest film, a documentary examining its title’s question: Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)? It will delve into the professional portion of this question, looking at Nilsson’s career as a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, as well as the musician’s personal life, including his close friendship with members of the Beatles.

The documentary will include interviews (including Terry Gilliam, Yoko Ono, Randy Newman, Paul Williams and Brian Wilson), previously unreleased archive footage, home movies and parts of Nilsson’s own personal autobiography, which was recently discovered. John Scheinfeld, who has been nominated for both a Grammy and an Emmy, directed the film.

Who Is Harry Nilsson? will open in New York’s Cinema Village and will spread to other markets in the United States throughout the fall and winter.

nice. i will hope this gets to sundance or ifc in the near future, too.

i only really dove into nilsson's discography a few years ago, but he's amazing. i'm pretty interested to know what terry gilliam has to say about him. i'm sure i already know what randy newman will say.

Finally got to watch this on Netflix streaming. It was a pretty encompassing doc with some amazing interviewees--Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks, etc. People who don't normally give interviews, but I guess would come out to praise Nilsson. This isn't some big budget doc though, and the graphics/editing/shots show it. But none of that really matters since the a)the subject is so compelling, and b)its pretty well laid out--though, I could see how someone unfamiliar with his work could get the timeline kinda screwed up. Hopefully this will do what I think the doc sets out to do: get a new audience into Nilsson's work. I certainly want to check out more of his stuff (including that Newman covers record, and the album of standards). Only person I wish they would've interviewed in-depth: Ringo. All of his interview/footage is archival, which I really think is a pity, since he would've known him the best of all his friends. Also, cool was the interviews with his kids. His son from his 2nd marriage seems to have gotten the raw end (though he did get to actually see his dad record, etc).

agreed about the oldest son - definitely got hosed

really, really sad to see how self-destructive nilsson was during his last 15+ years

such a waste...

Does anyone here have a digitized copy of Flash Harry that they can up or send my way?
I know that it's not supposed to be amongst his best work, but I would still like to hear it. And, as it is not available on CD (or in any other digital format), I would appreciate it if someone could send something my way so that I can hear it.
Thanks.

Just saw the documentary and it was really well-done.
Wouldn't recommend it for anybody who is not already a fan or does not already have an interest in Harry. But for you fans, it is a pretty interesting look at the man, his life, and his music. A pretty sad story, for sure. But still a good view and good insight.

I disagree. I rec'd it to friends who hadn't heard him (knowingly) and they really dug it and sought out his music afterwards. I think it was a great look into his life and music. I've always have been a fringe listener of his stuff, and it got me more interested in albums I wouldn't have normally picked up as well.

I stand (happily) corrected.

Yeah, last week my boss was talking about how great he thought this doc was, and he didn't know who Nilsson was beforehand.

What stuck me as the saddest part is how he seemed to have finally come to a happy place in his life just before all the years of abuse finally caught up with him.

Most definitely. I think Bob and I both agreed (above) that the eldest son kinda got the short end of the stick. His other kids seem so well-off, polished, etc. The eldest was just...there.

Watched most of this yesterday (had to stop with about 40 min to go, will finish tonight), and count me as a big fan. I was struck with the video footage that they were using during the time Nilsson Schmilsson was being made and in particular who was in the studio. I saw Ringo sitting at a drum kit and also swore that was Peter Frampton on guitar. Looking at the credits on AllMusic neither show up...at least in real name. Did they play on this album and use alias'?

I know that Chris Spedding played guitar and Klaus Voorman played bass. Outside from that, I am not sure.
