I'm diggin' Ampro Sánchez and Lower Dens. Hope to download Hanni El Khatib later this week.

SB: As a dreadfully late reply, you can stream the whole Unwelcome Guests album from their myspace page. I don't have a local copy of Pulled Apart By Horses, but if/when I do I'll upload it.

I've since found the Pulled Apart By Horses, and like it. I'll follow your advice on the Unwelcome Guests.

Build an Ark - Love Part 1

This was released at the beginning of this year, and billy g talked about it in his best of 2009 thread. (I think he bought it early from them at a show?) Anyway, it's basically spiritual jazz, jazz infused with soul and gospel music played by a really big pan-generational ensemble that features vocals on several tracks. It's a really beautiful, warm, and uplifting record.

I didn't buy it at a show. I actually bought it from Dusty Groove (and it wasn't marked promo) last October which is what makes me hard to consider it a 2010 album. Everyone else including AMG seems to list a 2010 release date so I'm not sure how I managed to buy it. In any case, it was my number 1 album last year and would be my #1 this year if I could consider it a 2010 release. Probably the best jazz record I've heard from the last 20 years although admittedly I've focused most of my jazz listening on releases from the 50's -70's and couldn't begin to call myself an expert.

For Drinky's benefit, Nick Rosen who plays bass for Build An Ark also released an album this year. I haven't heard it yet but have it on order. I'm not sure its necessarily all that similar in vibe to Build An Ark but it does feature some of the same personnel including Miguel Atwood Ferguson and Carlos Nino (Build An Ark's co-founders) and Mia Doi Todd on vocals.

At first I thought this was:

Which is both brilliant and annoying.

Per the description though I look forward to Love Part 1.

Hollerado (http://www.myspace.com/hollerado)
Record In A Bag
Royal Mountain Records

What is it: Loud, melodic, geetar-based indie rock
Why some Obners will like it: Sounds somewhat like New Pornographers, if Carl Newman or Dan Bejar could write a hook
Why some Obners will hate it: Because they like Newman and Bejar's lack of hooks
Radcliffe's take: Not a top 10 album, but possibly top 20. The mix is big and bright but also has just the right amount of dirt on it. Fave songs are "Got To Lose", "Fake Drugs", "Get Loose", and "Do the Doot Da Doot Do".

Not their best song, but a cool vid:

I picked up the Hollerado album after seeing it on your list in the rolling albums thread. I really can't say I liked it much at first but I'm finally coming around on it I think. Some of the lyrics are a bit goofy and musically they're nothing new to say the least. Still, it's a fun record for sure.

I'm surprised to see Juliet and Hard Love aren't in your favorite five songs, those are the two stand out tracks IMO.

I got both of them, and I've only listened a couple times, but I like them a lot. As said, the jazz/gospel/lounge lizard spirituality is an interesting mix... but even give the range of influences (sitar!!) they really are straightforward, down the middle, earnest. So far what I like best is the early 70's vibe... not exactly In a Silent Way, but I can hear Leon Thomas/Pharoah Sanders/Alice Coltrane... and both a sophisticated church service and a Blaxploitation soundtrack (both high recommendations in my view). The only drawback so far is that some of the vocals seem to be trying too hard.

Thanks for the rec.
