Cotton Jones - Tall Hours in the Glowstream

Image

pretty good description
Quote:
As a whole, Tall Hours in the Glowstream sounds like classic country music filtered through a dream-pop haze, a glittery summer night somewhere below the Mason-Dixon Line, where the sky is filled with fireflies and bright stars. The blurry sound drifts through the music and seeps its way into the lyrics, as much of the album is steeped in uncertainty, Nau's footing never steady enough to see a bold, clear image . . .

I had seen a few songs on people's mixes here and there but not much talk otherwise. I think for a few this may take you by surprise as it did me.

I checked out the Lower Dens today. It has enough redeeming moments that I'll spin it again, but it's not setting my hair on fire by any stretch.

I didn't hate it by any means, but I'm pretty sure I could if I tried with the way people are talking about it. Actually, I can't remember a single thing about it, it had that big of an impact on me. This'll be one of those albums exactly no one is talking about come January.

90% of the songs seem like they just gave up on trying to conclude it so they all just sort of stop playing instruments arbitrarily. They all just sort of end without any sort of cohesion.

This is my main critique of this album. Overall, I really like it, but the 2-3 minute songs would be better if they were drawn out more.

The Volebeats (released on 10.16.10)
Image
The Volebeats' first new album since 2005's Like Her LP is an epic 19-song double-LP affair, recorded in the heart of Detroit, Michigan. It's an AM radio-influenced American urban dreamscape, where non-stop hooks propel introspective lyrics across a warm analog atmosphere. There's a cover of a great pop song written by Gene Simmons of Kiss, "See You Tonight", as well as the Kinks' "This is Where I Belong". The other 17 tracks are all originals, with no filler throughout 67+ minutes. The Volebeats have never been easy to categorize, but Gram Parsons' term "Cosmic American Music" is one category they'll accept. Inspired by Detroit music, Memphis music, country music, folk rock, the British Invasion and more, the Volebeats are happy to blur the boundaries between any genres they encounter.

i can never get through more than 20 minutes of a girl talk album. its entertaining but i can't just sit and listen to it. if its on somewhere i'd be like "hey thats pretty clever!" but otherwise it's just exhausting and wears off real quick

Well, yeah, but I've been drinking and smoking for a couple hours so of course it's gonna sound great.

That seems to be the opposite for me. I have yet to get sick of a Girl Talk album.

There are so many good moments on this GT record. The Depeche Mode/Pitbull is crazy, as is the 'Cecilia/Sunday Bloody Sunday/Get Low' mix.

I'm recognizing a lot of this from seeing GT the other week, which of course makes sense since he tries stuff live and then incorporates it into his albums. But it also makes me chuckle because what exactly is he doing behind his laptop? I'm sure he's doing something but the idea of him checking gmail, updating twitter, or checking his feed on Facebook is funny to me.

The new one is good but it seems a little rushed, like he just had to get it out before the end of the year and wasn't as focused on making it as cohesive as the last one. There's nothing on here as great as the way he tied international player's anthem into the beginning and end of Feed The Animals .

I'm convinced this is what all laptop artists do...I check facebook at least 3 times during a dj set if there's a wireless connection.

stream the songs from all day and it shows you what samples are being used while it's playing. pretty neat.

Greg Cartwright of Reigning Sound and Coco Hames of the Ettes just planned to make a split-45 together, but they ended up with an entire album and a new band. The Parting Gifts’ debut full-length, Strychnine Dandelion, will be released November 9 via In The Red, and it happens to feature appearances from Dan Auerbach (Black Keys), Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs), Jem Cohen and Poni Silver (Ettes) and Dave Amels (Reigning Sound).

One listen in on my laptop and I'm enjoying this a lot.
