The Volebeats (released on 10.16.10)
Image
The Volebeats' first new album since 2005's Like Her LP is an epic 19-song double-LP affair, recorded in the heart of Detroit, Michigan. It's an AM radio-influenced American urban dreamscape, where non-stop hooks propel introspective lyrics across a warm analog atmosphere. There's a cover of a great pop song written by Gene Simmons of Kiss, "See You Tonight", as well as the Kinks' "This is Where I Belong". The other 17 tracks are all originals, with no filler throughout 67+ minutes. The Volebeats have never been easy to categorize, but Gram Parsons' term "Cosmic American Music" is one category they'll accept. Inspired by Detroit music, Memphis music, country music, folk rock, the British Invasion and more, the Volebeats are happy to blur the boundaries between any genres they encounter.

Grammy award winning electronic duo Daft Punk - who takes music as seriously as TRON fans take computer references - is scoring the upcoming film TRON: Legacy. It's no accident that the group's two visionary musicians, Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, are TRON fans too. Having grown up with an admiration for the ground-breaking TRON film in the 80s, Daft Punk took on the scoring of the next chapter of the story with extraordinary thought and precision. The critically acclaimed French duo composed and produced the album. The Duo assembled a symphony of one hundred world class musicians in London and recorded the orchestra at AIR Lyndhurst Studios, Britain's premier scoring facility.

1. Overture
2. The Grid
3. The Son of Flynn
4. Recognizer
5. Armory
6. Arena
7. Rinzler
8. The Game Has Changed
9. Outlands
10. Adagio for TRON
11. Nocturne
12. End of Line
13. Derezzed

16. Rectifier
17. Disc Wars
18. C.L.U.

Cool. I'll wait until i've seen the movie though. I've heard that the Wendy Carlos score for the original Tron movie is hard to find on vinyl.

Its in pretty good condition for being what, 25 years old? There are some on ebay for $25-30 that might be in better condition.

I'm kinda down on the new one. I expected a little bit more. There are some definite stand-out tracks (Derezzed, Flynn Lives), but overall I was kinda underwhelmed. Maybe once I take in the film I'll appreciate it more. Not saying its horrible, but I guess I went into it expecting a ridiculously unattainable measure of score.

Ordered and will arrive in two days. I'll put it up if nobody can track it down.

picked this up at Amoeba when I was down in LA. Big fan of this band, but this album. . .not that great.

did it ever grow on you at all? i love it, and it was pretty immediate for me. always been a fan of theirs, but to me, this is probably the best thing they've ever done.

i totally agree with the review above that praises the "warm analog atmosphere" and "no filler."

i liked more of their Byrdsian up-tempo stuff...not much of that to be found here. its grown on me a bit though, but near the bottom of their discography for me.
