FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Actor Leslie Nielsen, star of such comedies as "Airplane" and the "Naked Gun" series, died Sunday of complications from pneumonia, a nephew told a Canadian radio station. Nielsen was 84.

Nielsen died in hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale with family and friends by his side, nephew Doug Nielsen told CJOB radio in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Nielsen, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks, his nephew told CJOB. Nielsen's agent, John S. Kelly, confirmed his death.

Nielsen came to Hollywood in the mid-1950s after performing in 150 live television dramas in New York. With a craggily handsome face, blond hair and 6-foot-2 height, he seemed ideal for a movie leading man.

He quickly became known as a serious actor, although behind the camera he was a prankster. That was an aspect of his personality never exploited, however, until "Airplane!" was released in 1980 and became a huge hit.

The actor also had major roles in such films as "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Forbidden Planet" and appeared in many later television shows, including the cult hit "Police Squad."

Check for more details on this breaking news story.

few celebrity deaths have my crying--Johnny Cash was one of them. But damn, I certainly have the waterworks flowing.

I'm all for guys crying and don't put up with any of that "real men don't cry" bullshit -- but you cry when celebrities die? That has to be a clear sign of part of what's wrong with America.

It's a topsy-turvy world, and maybe the problems of two people don't amount to a hill of beans. But this is our hill. And these are our beans.

Yes, well. When I see five weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in plain view of a hundred people, I shoot the bastards, that's my policy.

Rumack: What was it we had for dinner tonight?
Elaine Dickinson: Well, we had a choice of steak or fish.
Rumack: Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.

Heard this on the radio this morning.
And yeah, I was gonna post with the exact same topic header, too. Guess it was the obvious one.

Hey, the guy was a part of my childhood... made me laugh ALOT when I was a kid (and as an adult, for that matter). So, while I didn't have the full waterworks happening, I do feel a very real sadness at his passing.
Rest in peace, you funny motherfucker. (Sorry, I don't speak Jive.)

Frank: A good cop - needlessly cut down by some cowardly hoodlums.

Ed: That's no way for a man to die.

Frank: No... you're right, Ed. A parachute not opening... that's a way to die. Getting caught in the gears of a combine... having your nuts... bit off by a Laplander, that's the way I wanna go!

Wilma Nordberg: [cries] Oh... Frank. This is terrible!

Ed: Don't you worry, Wilma. Your husband is going to be alright. Don't you worry about anything. Just think positive. Never let a doubt enter your mind.

Frank: He's right, Wilma. But I wouldn't wait until the last minute to fill out those organ donor cards.
[Wilma cries again]

Ed: What I'm trying to say is that, Wilma, as soon as Nordberg is better, he's welcome back at Police Squad.

Frank: ...Unless he's a drooling vegetable. But I think that's only common sense.
[Wilma cries again]

Now, nobody will be able to make him crack a smile. (Although it would be awesome if he were buried with a permanent smile on his face. Now, THAT would be the best joke of all... finally let one break out! And it's forever.)

Drebin: And you...came down here to get the hot story, didn't you? Pictures of me to send your lousy newspapers."
Hocken: Uh, Frank...
Drebin: Sure you think I'm a big hero, the man of the hour...well, do any of you understand how a man can hurt inside?!
Hocken: Frank, they're not here for you...Weird Al Yankovic is on the plane
