My CDs are in boxes in my closet and in an overflowing bag in my car. Very unorganized

Looking at some other people's numbers of albums by year, I thought... "Holy Crap..."

Then, I did it for mine, and around '99 I got into the "Holy Crap" level as well... :D

The low numbers for older albums shows my level of satisfaction with "Greatest Hits" representations of some older artists... kind of sad and pathetic on my part, huh? Maybe instead of searching through all the current albums and finding a lot of "bleh..." and "meh...", I should change my strategy to looking into more detail at some older artists that I enjoy. Might be more rewarding. I may just do that. This thread has changed my life...

I wish my collection was organized enough to do this.

I have tons of of stuff in iTunes that I don't care about or ever listen to in addition to all the stuff in there that I do like and actively listen to. And then I have a bunch of stuff with no year tags or incorrect year tags (hate it when reissues are tagged with the year of the reissue). My "proper" collection (CDs and vinyl) aren't catalogued at all. I've started using rateyourmusic, but at this rate it'll be another year before I have everything on there. And it's kind of annoying how if you own something in multiple formats, you can't tell it which formats. But I guess in all those cases it's safe to assume that I meant "CD + vinyl", although I might have been stupid and checked that "multiple" option for some things that I have on vinyl & mp3. I try to get everything on mp3 that I have on vinyl, and for the most part I've been able to.

I don't think I can extract this info from iTunes without a lot of smartlist manipulation, but just seeing the other results make me curious about my library too.

My collection is organized, but it's not digitized and I have no database or anything that keeps track of it. Wish I had the ambition to tackle it though.

Our CDs are not arranged by year. Arranged alphabetically in categories in order:
Hall of Fame (Stones, Beatles, Neil, Dylan, U2, Pavement, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Yo La Tengo, Los Lobos)
Grateful Dead (my partner is a DeadHead and there way too many here)
Rock
Americana
Jazz
Latin
Hip Hop
Soul/R&B
Ambient
Electronic
Post-Rock
World Music (arranged by continent)
Classical (arranged by chronological order/composer)

Wish I had them in a database with release date, but the distribution in years would be skewed by the thousands of vinyl I have down in the musicroom (never listened to) and the series of robberies of 100s of CDs in the late 80's/early 90s in the last years' of my addiction (with revolving criminals in and out of my house).

I finally finished getting all my albums into RYM over the T-giving break. FWIW, this is apparently my breakdown by year:

1940 - 1
1954 - 1
1955 - 3
1956 - 10
1957 - 9
1958 - 14
1959 - 17
1960 - 23
1961 - 15
1962 - 19
1963 - 18
1964 - 27
1965 - 38
1966 - 50
1967 - 69
1968 - 110
1969 - 110
1970 - 121
1971 - 112
1972 - 130
1973 - 129
1974 - 104
1975 - 91
1976 - 65
1977 - 76
1978 - 67
1979 - 63
1980 - 61
1981 - 43
1982 - 46
1983 - 43
1984 - 52
1985 - 60
1986 - 52
1987 - 72
1988 - 88
1989 - 81
1990 - 111
1991 - 100
1992 - 107
1993 - 117
1994 - 106
1995 - 105
1996 - 127
1997 - 125
1998 - 121
1999 - 149
2000 - 201
2001 - 218
2002 - 207
2003 - 174
2004 - 146
2005 - 158
2006 - 150
2007 - 99
2008 - 76
2009 - 64
2010 - 44

I was surprised by how many albums I have from the early 00's. It's a very imperfect system however with reissues being tracked sometimes by the year of the reissue rather than the original release date and comps of old material being the release year rather than the recording dates which is why there is nothing between 1940 and 1954.
