Domo Genesis - Rolling Papers

On the one hand, I like that on Domo's solo debut, the Odd Future member has brought a unifying theme (weed) and sound (laid-back but still pissed off) that was sorely missed from the Odd Future tape or "Radical". I also like that Tyler, The Creator and Left Brain's production is well beyond their years and experience and puts those two in the category as some of the best and most inventive hip hop producers working right now - I mean, these beats slap hard. I also like that Domo isn't quite as well, controversial, as Earl and Tyler - because while there is talk of sluts, fucking your girl, kicking your ass and all that in many more creative and colorful ways, he's not really talking about kidnapping cops and killing them or rape every other song. You can tell this album was produced while blunted, wrote while blunted and recorded while blunted, so it's a bit easier to digest.

But on the other hand, Domo isn't actually as skilled a rapper as most of his partners in Odd Future. I like his drawl and it's not ridiculous to place him into the category of recent weed-based hip hop like Curren$y, Wiz, Smoke DZA and all the rest - he totally fits and can more than hold his own. But while the album is more cohesive than the group's own compilation, the raps can be hit or miss, some of the songs just sound a little to blunted and don't need to exist and for some reason, the mastering or difference in recording quality from song to song really bugs me.

This is sit on your porch and smoke and chill rap, it's listen to in your car but don't necessarily have to blast rap. It's good shit, but it's not a classic or anything.

In Summary: Fits alongside other decent weed rap from this year. Production is fucking killer though.

Mike Kelly - Wake The Dead

Every few years I have a sudden resurgence and obsession of Americana music. For the last two years, I was mostly underwhelmed, but back in 2007 I made something like a 50-60 song, 2-cd mix of various country, alt. country, folk, roots, and americana music, no artist repeated more than once. That mix still sounds good today, and though I didn't keep 60 albums from that selection, there is no doubt that if you know where to look, take the time to listen to a plethora of artists and bands you've never heard of and do it often, every year is going to reward your little country self with some real standout work.

2010 was a year where it seemed like roots music was dead for quite a while, until I started looking. One thing led to another, one site led to another, lists linked to other lists, and I did my own investigation work and have found many releases from artists I had never heard of before, and some of those releases have become some of my very favorite thing I've heard this year.

Mike Kelly's debut full length "Wake The Dead" won't quite be a top 10 album, but it's quickly becoming one of my most listened to albums of the year and this is due mostly to the way that the songs he has written here find their way lodged into my head very easily. Musically, this album is something like a combination of Drive-By Truckers at their more forlelorn, Gaslight Anthem but less anthemic, Whiskeytown but less honky-tonky, and lots of the more upbeat songs have a structure that really remind me of Butch Walker's work back when he was in Marvelous 3 - but with a country sound. He's taking things from a lot of acts I like, infusing his own personality and story into the words and has managed to create quite an accomplished country album.

I won't say there are no negatives - because there are quite a few. Often times, it seems that Kelly is just playing a role in his music or veering from cliché to cliché as far as alt. country goes. Most songs are about relationships, or a friend and occasionally there is a ridiculous rocker ("Two Kegs in The Swimming Pool" is fun, but should really come from Miranda Lambert, not this dude). Kelly's writing is good and interesting, his phrasing going places that most music doesn't want to, but he has occasional lines that are like "c'mon dude, this isn't you" and songs that are a bit awkward ("When A Boy Loves A Girl" is cute but is kinda weird and striving too much.

I've listened intently, I've listened passively, I've blasted it in my car and I've used it to ignore the office at work, and all of these various situations have revealed different things about this album - that it's not perfect, that maybe I shouldn't really like it or that I should make a bigger deal out of some of the lyrics and clichés, that maybe the gruffness of his voice is a little bit of a put on, that by looking at this guy you would think he's a punk rocker, not a country singer - but this all goes out the window when I find myself just plainly enjoying these songs. It has become a quintessential Americana year for me, and this release has somehow found itself among the best. If you like that Texas sound, you might as well seek it out - it could be your thing. If you hate it, well tough shit because I'm still going to be enjoying it for a while longer.

In Summary: Good americana/alternative country shit. Could have a lot of fans on this board. Some awkward lyric phrasings, some real cliché topics and lines, but the sound is there. This guy could get really good, or he's just gonna be your favorite bar singer

Twin Shadow - Forget

This is how you craft a brilliant pop album. I've read some of the stories about George Lewis Jr. aka Twin Shadow's history in the music industry and it's fascinating and all, but totally irrelevant and tells me nothing about how he was able to create this record, one of the best of the year.

With an aesthetic that recalls the ever-so-hip 80's revival, "Forget" manages something that most of these other new-new wave albums fail to: by creating a sound that is it's own, both retro and modern and experimenting with a lot of different sounds. We could list a lot of influences heard in Twin Shadow's sound: Roxy Music, Morrissey, Tears for Fears, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tv on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, "chillwave", it goes on and on and it's all apt, but there is something here that is soulful. Whereas bands like The Radio Dept., Wild Nothing and even Caribou are creating retro sounding pop music that is real good, there is something inhuman about a lot of their tracks. They're about atmosphere, awesome, cohesive sounds - but too often it just sounds a bit...cold. Twin Shadow's songs features similar instrumentation and drum machine patterns, but his voice is just exquisite, one of the best new vocalists in a while, and his songs speak to the listener: personal yet applicable to the outside and it is because of this that his music feels much warmer, much more human. It's not perfect music, but it's music that definitely speaks to you.

What I really enjoy about this record is how each track is distinguishable from the one before it. Just about every song has a hook that you want to hum along to, but the actual sounds and format on each of these 11 songs is different enough to retain it's own unique quality while still retaining enough cohesion to work as a really great album. I mean for me, this plays like some of Roxy Music's best moments, like a New Order greatest hits - it's an album that should be considered one of the best albums of 2010 and one of the best albums of 1984.

The production is top notch, it's not glossy and has a bedroom feel to it, which is exciting, but it's not lo-fi. But with Chris Taylor's help, every instrumental choice and pattern within the songs just seems right. There are few bands who can do this, where a single, simple synth effect in just one place can change the entire song for the better and "Forget" has this feature on just about every song.

For me, this might be the best electronic-based pop album since the Junior Boys' second album "So This is Goodbye"...and they're basically my favorite band. I don't want to sound completely hyperbolic because this isn't my favorite album of the year, but I can say with confidence that this might be the definitive pop statement of 2010 and an album that I will remember the year by a decade from now.

In Summary: The best chillwave, synth-pop, 80s-revival, etc. record released this year. Just great pop music.

agree - enjoying this one.

Not my typical cup of tea, but of late this one has been receiving some significant play around the house. On the surface it's an ostensibly early 80's-ish British synth-pop record, but repeated listens reveal a rather well-crafted, thoughtful record.

I guess I'm going to have to give that Twin Shadow album a chance. The general aesthetic is just really unappealing to me.

i wrote this twin shadow off way too early. my wife was playing the record the other day & i had to stop and ask what it was. slow is a pretty decent single.

granted i've only toyed w a few tracks but what are you & jewelz hearing with this odd future crew? i don't find the production particularly interesting & the beats are far from slappin'. i don't understand all the heaping praise here & elsewhere. i've tried on several occasions and find this stuff on par w cool kids & other juvenile rap (that terrible 'vans' shit). post some of your favorite tracks?

i don't really have stand out tracks, it all kinda runs together into one big mush of a sound that I'm digging. I really like the beats a lot. One of their albums has more typically "now" beats and made me realize how different their sound is, especially to what is meant for a club. I mean, it's not crazy groundbreaking, i'm sure they are treading on ground people have tread, but they created a sound and an attitude that they live in and make work.

I didn't come in with any expectations, and I wasn't aware of the hype. My friend casually said, "check this out, and grab some albums" and it clicked with me right away. They kids have, for lack of a better word, moxie. Their lyrics are cartoonish and offensive, but they pull it off without sounding like horrible people.

I don't know, I just dig it. I like the way all the songs run together in the same way that I could listen to The Fall or GBV all day and lose track of what song I just heard.

Is there anything else from this year that you've felt really strongly about, good or bad?

If so, I don't see why you'd quit now.
