i don't see how any of this is bad. jsh's comment had no ground because i had reviewed 4 hip hop albums out of like 62. i like the deftones, i have 3 deftones albums that i listen to semi-regularly and i didn't think "Diamond Eyes" is as good as those.

Fred Estby (Carnage,Dismember) wakes up one morning and says to himself: I gonna make a record containing all the styes of music I dig all in one package....I will get all my buddies to sing and play leads on all the tracks...It will be fucken ace!

Not sure if thats what really happened....But ol Fred sure did what he set out to do....Make a No-Nonsense Death Metal,Sludge,Stoner,Doom,Heavy Metal record...Are you with me? Basically this Disc is a compilation of a shit pot full of styles of heavy music with a dirty buzz to them.

With a laundry list of fellow musicians and some cool tunes he wrote... he has managed to pull off a project that would surely fail in most cases. Starting with an intro which later features Chris Reifert(Autopsy) you get 9 more tracks of Swedish goodness...Ranging from Iron Maiden style guitars in 'Soulside Sepents' to the Black Sabbathy 'After The Void'. This shit is bass heavy buzzing style Metal with an emphasis on crude Death Metal riffs..Then tack on guest vocals and guest lead guitars in almost every track and we have a winner folks !

kvelertak is my biggest surprise of the year. they're somewhere between, like, refused and baroness. it's completely accessible metal, if you're even the type of person who'd categorize this as metal. i could see how people wouldn't since it ganks a lot of sound from melodic hardcore punk. they're norwegian, so it's like a pre-requisite that they must have some black metal influence and that shines here and there, but don't go into this expecting that throughout. it's way catchy, but also pummelling.

well, it was pretty awesome. as I said, that was a really small club, with maybe 25 men and 3 girls as the audience. there were 3 bands, interment played first and put down hell of a show. in the beginning the sound was terrible, but then the mixer dude made it and they reproduced that quite harsh sound of the album - in a way.
the first two pics are interment, the second one may give an idea of that bar and the size of the stage. I've never been in that club before, it's a bit far out, but they seem to host metal bands quite often so maybe I wasn't there for the last time.

I mean, it was not that easy to recognize the songs but at least 4 or 5 songs I remembered from the album. the crowd was a bit strange, as these long haired metal geeks didn't show much enthusiasm. the shook their heads, raised their hands during the songs and drank beer. not too much applause, maybe they fear to look gay.

the second band was forgettable, I think they called themselves diabolical, also from sweden but with a more "contemporary" death metal sound.
the third band was awesome, named urn, from finland. all the other photos I made during their show. death-metal-induced old school heavy metal I would say, an entertaining show.

I actually recorded a video of one interment and one urn song, but those vids are about 320 MB and I don't really know how to share. I could upload it through drop box but I don't have a youtube account or something like this. turns out that an iphone is kind of great to record some songs at shows, the sound is surprisingly good.
oh and I bought a shirt of interment, just because the girl behind the merch counter was the only beautiful person in that bar.

If Andrew WK grew up in a Scandinavian country listening to Black and Death metal all the time, he would have made a band like Kvelertak. I mean that in the best possible way.

Track 2 just makes me want go fucking crazy. I just wish I knew what the hell they are saying.

this is absolutely incredible. the guitarist from watchtower and the bassplayer from cannibal corpse, now together with the drummer of obscura. this is the best instrumental prog metal album I've ever heard. stunning musicianship.
maybe the few interested obnerians already have it, but if not, there you go...

recently found this album from Ascension (Germany). well produced, very powerful, atmospheric Black Metal, featuring some absolutely killer riffs. reminds me in some ways of Watain.

fuck yeah man, it's great. if i had done a Top 20, it would have been in there. very Sabbath inspired riffing in places, and just dead fucking heavy.
