I haven't been paying much attention but it seems like the blogs are crazy for this really cold, desolate, synthetic sound that I'm not really catching on and joining. Is it just me, is it just my time to say that what I'm with isn't it, and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me? Or is there a different "sound" to this year? I wonder if it's somehow a reflection on the economy. At least during Reagan we all cut angry records about being pissed off and withdrawing from society, but these sound like people withdrawing into Facebook accounts.

It's not just in indie stuff.

And I wouldn't say it's all "cold" either, as a lot of "chillwave" and the like is kinda warm and nostalgic. Like you, though, I'm not really into any of it, either.

Hell, I'm so out of it that I can't even really guess as to just what synth stuff you're talking about. I hear all kinds of stuff using synths that falls into a bunch of different genres...not sure at all which of it is in.

On the heels of two sensually dark 7 inches, Luis Vasquez of The Soft Moon, has completed his self-titled debut full-length on Captured Tracks.

Raised under the burning sun of the Mojave desert, Vasquez channels both his punk upbringing and Afro-Cuban heritage to sculpt decidedly dystopian soundscapes for a new generation of torn romantics. It’s a record set somewhere in the near post-apocalypse where technology enchants as much as it destroys.

Tracklist:

1. Breathe The Fire 3:14
2. Circles 4:02
3. Out of Time 3:52
4. When It’s Over 4:25
5. Dead Love 4:04
6. Parallels 3:10
7. We Are We 2:29
8. Sewer Sickness 2:33
9. Into The Depths 3:27
10. Primal Eyes 2:41
11. Tiny Spiders 3:50

I noticed this listening to KEXP over the last few months. A lotta dreary synthy shit seems to sneak its way into the rotation. I think it was Monday night I uttered "what is this mopey bullshit? Did we lose a war?"

yeah, she/he/they (just heard for the first time this morning) is/are one of the ones that I was thinking of, along with all the chillwave whatever and this Salem stuff. it just seems like the audio zeitgeist.

If it's stuff like the above I like it...especially late night. Also, anyone have the links to the other 2 of the 3 albums supposed to be out by this fella, I'd appreciate 'em.

Amy Granzin Wrote:
Maybe it's the season, or maybe I've grown weary of a musical landscape scorched by twitchy dubstep, witchhouse drones, icy synths, and apocalyptic visions, but comfort and joy sounds awfully appealing right now.

that's how I feel about that Kanye song with Bon Iver.

but then, I'm listening to the Elvis xmas album at the moment, so I might not be the best ears here.

I feel like "it" isn't even one coherent thing. The longer this thread goes on, the more lost I am.
