I love both pecan pie and porters. But, the idea of a beer that tastes like both pretty much makes me gag.

had one of these on Friday night. Was nice at first, especially the aroma, but the aftertaste was just that of a Blue Moon with an Orange wedge

Quote:
BREWERY DESCRIPTION
Orange Blossom Ale. Inspired by the rich fragnance of blooming orange groves, this copper colored ale combines the flavor and aroma of real orange tree flowers with a well balanced, full flavored ale to produce a real treat for the senses. Munich and light Caramel malts produce a smooth, creamy malt complexity, and American hops give the beer a bright, refreshing bitterness and dry finish. The orange blossom aroma blends superbly with the other beer flavors, providing a unique dimension that is the perfect complement to tangy, herbal or spicy foods, soft cheeses or pastries.

And Jason I really dig the oak aged Yeti. That's probably the best stout I can get nextdoor at the decent grocery store, not counting the Goose Island Bourbon County stuff, which is not an every day (or every month) kinda beer.

Recents...

Meantime Coffee Porter
ImageImage
From merry ol' Enga-land, part of the last big Shiv haul. This tasted like 2/3 glass mediocre porter, 1/3 glass coffee. It was a LOT of coffee flavor, and if the porter had been stronger it might've been a great beer for, say, Sunday Brunch. But it was thin enough to see through, easily - it looks like Newcastle. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good enough either. C+

Crooked Line - Detour Double IPA
Image
Jackpot. Motherfucking JACKPOT. Man this was gooood a' hell. I think I exclaimed something along the lines of "sweet jesus that's good" at least 4 times during it. Best double IPA I've had in awhile, since the last trip to Busty's place, probably, when we had like 5 or 6 different kinds. This was very, very well balanced to me. A great big malt presence that was sunny and mellow but very full - it reminded me of the smell of the barley fields around Bitburg when I was brewing over there-, then just the right slap of big wet hops that weren't overly bitter, and finally the lingering tail of the big slug of alcohol that just slid down your throat - almost subtle enough to miss, but not quite. Never heard of these guys before, they're from Utah and the bottle was corked not capped, and who knows, maybe this is their one trick. But it's a very, very good trick. A+, fellas. Well played.

Molson Canadian, again
Image
I needed an 18 pack of something cheap, for my wallet's (and my liver's) sake. Goes down well enough while making christmas presents for folks, here another magnetic knife block by request, this time out of black walnut instead of mahogany.

Saxo - Belgian Amber
Image
I've commented on them before, but I found small .333mL bottle 4-packs on that Shiv trip. And that fucking rules, because it's awesome to start the evening with style, then shift to crapbeer. I still maintain that this is the best bargain going by a landslide in the "real" belgian category. The 3 of theirs I've had (includes Caracole and Nostradamus) are as good as almost anything from Belgium that I've had, and they're usually 2/3 the price.

Glad that Crooked Line worked out so well because I'm gonna go pick some up soon.

I found some bottles of that Dogfish Head Bitches Brew at a co-op in vermont for only $10 so I might buy a few more this weekend.

Been seeing these for awhile, and was intrigued. Bought a 12-pack mix last night for the Ravens game. They were all decent. Nothing spectacular. My favorite was probably the Hef, even though I'm an IPA fan. It was just downright good with the chicken that BBQ'd.

Yeah. I think it was pretty good as per usual for those guys but it's ben a week since I had it and I've drank a LOT of since then so I'm probably gonna drink the new bottle I got tonight and give a better description of it.

Those Crooked Line's (series of big beers) are from a brewery called Uinta. They've just arrived in Chicago but the price tags have me scared away... and I don't think there are bottling dates on the bottle. I hear the barleywine is very good.

yeah, i really wanna try that goose island vanilla now.

i didn't really take a lot of pics and a bunch of them came out blurry. we just went to the brewpub, no time to take the brewery tour and make the drive back to catch our flight. we brought back a couple bottles of their vodka they make at the brewpub. i got the blood orange and my friend got the peanut butter(!), which i had a shot of at the pub with their grape vodka. PB&J! it was good but i don't know if i'd want a whole fucking bottle of PB vodka. they had a decent amount on tap there but there were a few things i'd wanted to try that they were out of.

Image

i think this beer was the Poppaskull, which i just found at another beer store near me. (let me know if you want to check that one out after you finish off your haul).

So it's a rouchbier. Those can kinda neat, or those can be kinda gross.

yes, I believe Rauchbier translates into "Smoked Beer".

This particular American Smoked Porter is pretty fucking good. You definitely get that smoked cherrywood flavor in the middle.

Damn, I can't believe I spelled that wrong. And it's a smoked porter... cool. I'll have to look for it.
