The Kids Are All Right (C-) - I didn't like this at all. I found the Ruffalo & Bening characters unbearable. Wafer thin plot.

Carlos (B) - I watched this as a three part (not sure if this is standard), kinda lost it's way in the third part. Still, thumbs up as a whole.

Last Train Home (B+) - Quite touching at times. Some of the shots of the crush at the station, wow.

Chungking Express (A-) - As great as the last time i watched it.

Stone (D) - Absolute bore, poor performance by De Niro.

Enter The Void (?) - Hmm.

I'm Still Here (D) - Fuck off.

I was thinking more along the lines of the folly of our Afghanistan policy....

Pete - I think they played Carlos in 3 parts on IFC over here. I'd like to see that. 70s terrorism had so much more cache.

Aye. Although not much depth, i think the political interplay would appeal to you for sure.

Yeah, Kids Are All Right was a stinker. Plot was complete shit. Who gives a shit about these characters? And the director seemed like she was trying to create a post-racial, post-hetero Stuff White People Like social experiment and pass it off as completely normal.

I wanted to see Enter the Void at our local arthouse, but fuck if I didn't bail to do something less interesting. Can you elaborate on your "Hmm." review?

Haha on Jackoff Phoenix. I was initially interested in seeing it, but then realized why the hell would I subject myself to it? Talk about self-indulgent.

I finally saw Winter's Bone last night. Good movie, but if I had to choose a bleak, grey, depo movie set in the South, I'll go for Ballast every time.

this came out to 5 1/2 hours. it is epic. it's also lodged in a lot of fiction. the first three and a half hours are pretty awesome between minor jobs, his recruitment with the palestinian liberation group, bigger jobs, the OPEC raid, his split with palestinian interests, etc. but the last part is basically just a downward spiral mercenary tale that is a little bloated. it's shot well and ramirez is really good as carlos, but it didn't blow me away like i wanted it to. also, great use of new order's "dreams never end" and wire's "ahead" and "drill."

^I've heard good things about that.

My recentish movieage:
Kick-ass 4.5/5
^much MUCH better than I was expecting. Actually will end up being one of my favorites this year.
The Last Emperor 2.5/5
^Tedius. Some good moments, but ultimately lacking the punch of authenticity needed for a biopic.
Antichrist 4.5/5
^Sparkling exploration of the horror in nature and in human nature. Not for most viewers, though.
Charade 4/5
^I love these older who-dun-it mystery thrillers. Audrey Hepburn and Hugh Grant sure don't hurt things, either.
All the President's Men 4/5
^It takes a helluva cast and director to turn something as immediately bland sounding as a movie about journalism, to turn it into a gripping thriller.
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows pt 1 4.5/5
^The best movie yet for fans of the books
8 1/2 3.5/5
^Full points for style... but the disjointed storytelling grated on my nerves.
The 400 Blows 3.5/5
^The poor ending ruins an otherwise 5-star film.
Monsoon Wedding 3/5
^Amid too many plot diversions and some humorous acting, there is a good story here. This is in dire need of some judicious editing.
Chungking Express 2.5/5
^I didn't get it. Though for a movie I responded poorly to, it did make my short list of "movies I didn't like, but would like to see again after some time passes to see what I make of a second passing."
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear 4.5/5
^So much better than the first Naked Gun movie. Consistantly funny with an interesting plot. Viewed on honor of Leslie.
Hunger 3.5/5
^A weird little film that is really strong during the first 2/3 of the movie, with the 20+ minute scene between the protagonist and a priest being one of the finer presentations of how to do dialogue in a movie. Unfortunately the final 1/3 stumbles by feeling too short and undeveloped.
The Box 3/5
^A cute little sci-fi that feels like it takes its cues from Fincher's The Game. Nothing particularly surprising, but it unfolds in a way that keeps up the suspense. Plus, the darker ending is always a perk, imho. Still, the acting is atrocious (can we keep Cameron Diaz out of all future movies, please?) and there is too much side-plot stuff going on that should have been axed.

Not that I necessarily disagree with all of them, but those are some funny ratings taken all together.

I will fully admit to thinking that 8 1/2 and 400 Blows were a little overrated. There are other Fellini movies I like much more than 8 1/2. As for 400 Blows, French New Wave just seems to be kinda lost on me in general. Feels like it's all style. Or the style is the substance, which I guess is the point, but I just don't care.

I do like Chungking Express, though.

I still haven't seen Kick-Ass, but based on the comic I just don't see how it could possibly be that good.

Last night I watched The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.

holy shit.

I saw Dancin' Outlaw and its sequel like twelve years ago, but that shit could NEVER had prepared me for the outright depravity and hillbilliness of this doc. I'd argue Jesco White might be among the tamer members of his own family. For instance: Lady crushing up pills and snorting them in her hospital room a few hours after giving birth? Yeah, that's just the start of things.

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Never read the comic though.

It's interesting that you think that, considering its one of the most famous shots in cinema history.

I can see how it might make for a famous shot, but as a conclusion to an emotionally taut film, I didn't find that it really resolved anything. (I'm sure that there are tons of critical essays on the film that would tell me where I'm wrong, but I'm just going on first impressions here.) The 400 Blows is aparently the first in a series of 3 movies, so maybe the shot makes sense as a lead-in to the follow-up film... but I still have to judge the movie based off of what the movie presents.

This is so good. I can't believe I held out watching this until now. I also cannot believe that this was largely ignored when it came out awards-wise. Incredible.

A question though--why the heck do they spread this thing out over 2 DVDs. Makes no sense. The break to the 2nd disc is so awkward. I literally thought my player had stopped. Michael Caine has a line....and cut.

Yeah that's one of my all-time favorites. And I can't imagine why it fit on one VHS and not 1 dvd...

There's a short story, and then three more features (I watched the Antoine Doinel boxset earlier this year): Antoine & Collette / Stolen Kisses / Bed & Board / Love on the Run. But Antoine & Collette picks up in his teen years, so the shot is not really a lead in. It's just made to be intentionally ambiguous, which was something new at the time.

That said, I'm certainly not discounting your gut reaction to it, but rather was just surprised.

Really enjoyed this, especially since the Mouse House is so secretive about what goes on behind closed doors. I knew there was always friction with Jeffrey Katzenberg and and Roy Disney, but I never knew it went as deep. Its pretty amazing how the pieces came together though, and that they created some fantastic films.

Image

...and then there was this film. Normally, just by the trailer and poster art I would expect this to be another Clash of the Titans. However, Nicolas Winding Refn who directed Bronson did this, so I decided to check it out. I'll say this--its incredibly beautifully shot, and the score is pretty great if you like post-rock. The problem is, it suffers from its own device, that of a minimalistic film. To me, this would've worked better if there was absolutely no dialog. As with many minimalistic films, Valhalla is open to interpretation, which gives it some extra legs if you want to believe it has a deeper meaning than what is up on the screen. If your a tech geek like me, this was shot using the Red camera RAW format.

Pretty stunning. No political agenda whatsoever. Just US soldiers laid bare in one of the deadliest outposts of Afghanistan, the Korengal valley, for 15 months. They go through everything from firefights several times a day to long periods of nothing but themselves and their heads and the guys around 'em. Moments of terror, sadness, and surprisingly, humor with guns on them at all times.

Regardless of how I feel about war I was left with nothing but admiration for these guys. Fucking horrible shithole of a place.

Restrepo was excellent. It's streaming on Netflix right now for anyone who's interested.
