Has anyone had the chance to see Chico & Rita yet? I have to wait till mid January for the local arthouse cinema to have a screening. Reviews have been pretty good.

Black Swan was amazing.

I enjoyed his other flicks better, but it was really good, and the Mila / Natalie 'scene' will definitely get me to catch this when it hits cable over and over again.....

this scene was fine, but i thought the earlier solo scene was shot better.

i enjoyed it overall. the scenes during the performance were amazing, especially portman during act 2.

True Grit. there are some notable differences between the coen brothers' remake and the original. the new one isn't perfect, but the original was far from perfect. i think i'd pick the new one. the actress playing mattie can hold her own; matt damon is better than glen campbell; it's way funnier; and the differences do work, for the most part. feel good elements of the original are often tossed out and the new epilogue bests the old one. now i think i'm due to actually read the book.

Finally saw Exit Through The Gift Shop. Loved it. Intriguing that it plays on both levels and is good whether its an elaborate hoax or not.

Leon Bronstein is not your average Montreal West high school student. For one thing, none of his peers can claim to be the reincarnation of early 20th century Soviet iconoclast and Red Army hero, Leon Trotsky. When his father sends Leon to public school as punishment for starting a hunger strike at Papa's clothing factory, Leon quickly lends new meaning to the term 'student union', determined as he is to live out his pre-ordained destiny to the fullest and change the world

Also watched this, which was a nice spin on the normal high school comedy. The final act was a bit weak, but overall it was harmless fun.

I loved this too. Brilliant work, and I don't believe it's a hoax, though it is hard to believe that Thierry does exist.

Some of my favorite moments were when Thierry was just clueless about what he was filming. Banksy shows him the counterfeit money and he's like "...you found this here? ...I made it, for fucksake, I printed it." Another time he asked an artist, "so you draw?...That's a painting..." This dude just wanted to be around these guys and film them and somehow he ended up being one of them by copying them, and the common public ate it up.

Maybe...but its certainly not out of the realm of reason that this could indeed be a hoax. There isn't anything in the movie that conclusively points one way or another, which is why is so brilliant.

Watched the new TRON movie last night. Loved it - though I love the original too. It's one of my favorite movies to pop in while i get in bed and fall asleep. It's just a neat 80s sci-fi adventure, and visually it's really wild, but at the same time dreamy and mellow.

IMO the new is like a remake, a reboot, and a sequel all wrapped into one. Loved the score/soundtrack too!

Saw The Fighter this afternoon. Pretty great and one of the best "sports related" movies I've seen in years.

No Rocky-esque sentimentality. Just some real life stuff (as much as a movie can be) and a sad reminder of how so many boxing stories simply never get told.

Christian Bale is awesome. It's hard to tell sometimes if he's the lead or Wahlberg's character. If the producers are smart they'll politic for Bale to be nominated in the Best Supporting category. He should win it in a walk. Also, whoever the actress is that plays the mother. She was great too. Should get a nod as well.

I actually left feeling pretty sad for the current demise of boxing. Such a great sport that has just been mishandled to the point of irrelevance (for the most part).

Melissa Leo. Nominated for Best Actress two years ago, for Frozen River, & erstwhile homicide detective on, erm, Homicide. Appears to have lived hard too, & seen many upclose.

Yeah, I've seen mixed reviews on Tron but I liked it. If you walked in wanting plot and drama and a moving story and characters, you went to see the wrong movie. If you walked in ready to watch something that looked and sounded cool on a big screen, you got your money's worth.

And yeah, loved Exit Through the Giftshop when I saw it in the theaters. Noticed it is available for Netflix streaming and will need to watch again. My favorite part is Banksy saying how he used to tell everybody they should make art, but after Thierry..."I don't really do that anymore."

100% cosigned. i'm not sure what people expected this movie to be like. and even through all of the whining, i haven't heard one person say, "it didn't look cool."

i read a bunch of people saying "it's a 2-hour daft punk video." and what exactly is wrong with that?

You two are basically saying, "if you expected a shitty movie, you won't be disappointed, which makes it good."

i'm saying not every movie, especially a sequel to some middling tripe, should be expected to challenge all-time classics. it's a really fun movie to watch in a theater. it won't be nearly as fun at home without the IMAX and 3D.

Not at all....just that different movies give you different things. Frankly, if I am going to go plunk down cash to see something on the big screen I tend to want to see cool visuals and all that. If a movie is all about plot and characters and that, I can watch it on a TV screen and get just as much out of it. Tron was all about presenting a pretty picture. And, I absolutely enjoyed watching that pretty picture 12 feet tall with a groovy soundtrack. I see nothing shitty about that experience.

We saw Tron as well. I loved the soundtrack, because it was so perfect - it was just seamless. The look of the movie, the art direction I guess, was also very good. It felt a lot, though, like The Dude hanging out in a world designed by Apple engineers. I couldn't believe some of the lines they gave Bridges - I remember being yanked out of disbelief by some really stupid dialog a few times, and I wasn't expecting anything too lofty. The ducati placement was really prominent but it seemed appropriate enough. My only real overall complaint was that so much of the movie felt slow. The action sequences were very good, but it seems like there weren't really that many of them, and the quiet scenes inbetween weren't really super strong. Oh and that cantina scene... holy matrix ripoff. The foppish european dandy character was so much like the Mirovingian or whatever his name was. I donno. I enjoyed watching it, but that doesn't mean everything was perfect.

I caught some of it on HBO over the weekend and was laughing at how hokey it is but I thought it was highly entertaining in the theater with surround sound and 3D.

SPOILER ALERT...

This (along with the frequent droughts of action) is my main complaint. The scene at the end where Bridges stood and conducted the elements like some sort of climate maetro was simply horrible. It's like they couldn't figure out how to keep Clu from catching Lil' Flynn and his chick, so they just pulled this stupidity out of their ass. Yeah, everthing looked cool, but that simply wasn't enough to excuse the rest of this dreck.

I'm in a bad position here because I haven't seen Tron and I doubt that I will. Z, who likes it, called a "sequel to middling tripe." Not exactly going to entice 10 bucks from me or even a spot on my Netflix cue.

But I'd describe Avatar, although it was somewhat hokey and had other flaws, as having a decent story and characters. There was more there than just cool pictures. It was an epic on the grandest scale I've ever seen.

re: tron

the pacing/flow of events - it's exactly like the original. i kinda love that. start in the real world, CEOs are pricks (though not as connected to the plot in the first), then to the grid, then play some games, then bust out, then find the "information guy," then take that weird "train on a string of light" ride, then the climax.

flynn - HE'S FLYNN! He was Flynn before he was the Dude! Sure, he's been trapped on the grid for 20 years, but he's still a joystick jockey at heart. i was glad they put stuff in to make him seem more human/a user, it really reflected well against Clu.

Zombieland

A fun movie. Woody Harrelson's quest for a twinkie, guns, zombie kills galore, Zombie-Bill-Murrary, conartist girls, this is what a zombie movie should be.

But I'm tired of the micheal cera type indie young male lead.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf

I would have loved to be in the room when this movie was pitched. "It's about a couple who fight for an entire night and involve another couple into their crazy marriage fight." "What happens after the fight?" "Nothing, they just fight and play games with each other."

But it was great. One of those movies I loved but don't think I would want to watch again. And dear god, what kind of monster was Richard Burton? He was perfect in his role. So perfect that I'm not sure he was acting.
