Its definitely solid. Wish they would tour around here.

Musically it's really impressive. (Or instrumentally or whatever.) The vocals are a little too Cobra Commander for me, but they don't intrude or really detract that much. Only one listen so far to all of those, anyway.

Agalloch are terribble imo, and it's mostly due to the vocals.

2nd listen and the vocals didn't bother me. They're not in the same hemisphere as "terrible".

2nd listen to the Harvey Milk did nothing for me. But Kylesa sounded great this morning, and I think Alcest might be a grower.

Now in a completely different vein, time to dive into Autre Ne Veut and Future Islands after giving this Fresh & Onlys album (top 20 lock) another spin.

Just ran across this, and it seems like its up a bunch of y'all's alley. Its a 2-piece, pretty fuzzed out, lo-fi rawk, with glimpses of rockabilly.

Swimsuit is a Detroit based indie/rock/twee band. A friend sent me this demo and I've been listening to it on repeat for a couple of days now. Perfect two minute pop songs that are both intricate and infectious. From start to finish this demo has an intangible special quality to it that I can't put my finger on. Easily the best new band in Detroit, and seemingly poised to have their careers launched into the indie rock stratosphere.

This is really fun, and good. There's a lot of late 80s/early 90s Washington State K Records reminiscing going on here, and I really love it. "Evaporation" is going to be in my head for the next few days.

So I just downloaded Das Racist's sit down, man. If I had heard it last year it would have been in my top 5, so good.

Finally listened to Luke Doucet yesterday. Easily top 10 material had I heard it.

This isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for straightahead countryRAWK then it's a goldmine.

Collins and co-writer/hubby/ bassist Al let straightforward lyrics, easy melodies and guitar riffs out the wazoo tell the stories, from the blues-hammering "Cool" and the countrified "Little Things" to the zydeco-flavored "Carry Me Away" and the soulful "It Hurts to Breathe." Rock & roll is Collins' main meat, though, as "Tied To You," "Don't Doubt Me Now" and "Lend the Devil a Hand" make perfectly plain. In that mode she owes obvious debts to Jason the Scorchers and the Georgia Satellites, but that's only natural, given that the Satellites' Dan Baird produced and both he and Scorcher Warner E. Hodges spray their six-string sizzle all over the record.

Given that there aren't nearly enough powerhouse Americana LPs like Sometimes Ya Gotta... in the world, let alone coming from Nashville, Collins standing proudly in the tradition of such great bands is hardly a fault, is it?

I gave first listens to four albums today.

Ariel Pink - I can see now how these guys would fit on a bill with Os Mutantes but not my thing at all.

Dylan LeBlanc - Initial impression was that it's a little boring. I recognize though that a quick judgment based on a low volume listen through computer speakers can't really be trusted for acoustic singer songwriter stuff so I'll give it a few more chances.

Willie Nile - I'm a fan but this doesn't seem like one of his better albums although it did get better as it went along. Not sure if it's better or worse than his last but it's no Streets of New York.

Walkmen - Didn't make much of an impression. It's not the bombastic style of some of their stuff that I really don't care for. It didn't seem to have all the layers of sound that I really liked from the debut though either. It was mellower than I expected and I don't hear anything to suggest that it would be a grower but I did see repeated comments that it grew on people so I'll keep it for now and see if it grows on me.

Mynabirds - I really liked this and it maybe could have made my top 20 if I heard it earlier.

Maybe not, but personally, I have found it to be a bit of a grower. It's oddness wasn't readily apparent to me beneath the AM pop radio production on a first listen. But then, with more exposure, it crept more and more under my skin. And, I like it a lot.
Give it another couple of listens if you haven't already. Again, I know that you and I disagree on a lot of similar music. But, I am curious to see if this one gets to you like it got to me.

Listening to the Laura Marling album. Really digging it. Think it will be my next album purchase. Might actually be better than her bf's band's album.

I gave first listens to a few more the other day.

Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin - Pretty good but I doubt it would have made my list. Definitely deserving of more listens though.

Sun Kil Moon - I haven't listened to anything since the first album. It's obviously very mellow but that's no surprise. It's pretty much impossible to judge based on one listen at low volumes through computer speakers.

Women - I was ready to hit delete during the first song but it got better there after. The third song I found myself liking a little bit. I definitely hear some interesting things but they don't quite coalesce in to good songs as much as I'd like them too though.

I don't really think I'd call it metal either, Drinky. Just a great blend of shoegaze leaning to the heavy. It grew on me immensely.

Shiv, I've like almost all the Blank Dogs I've heard. Didn't know about this.
