THE PIONEER

aka back in the saddle bitches

<move 'em on, head 'em up, head 'em up, move 'em out, set 'em out, ride 'em in, cut 'em out>

After a comparatively meat-free holiday, we reconvened on our usual night to assemble burger No. 18. To recap, it was a double decker with aged Swiss, bacon, garlic aioli, lettuce, rosemary and two varieties of mushroom on a sesame seed bun. All the ingredients were procured (some with a little improvisation) except the wild mushrooms. And since Shera hates mushrooms anyway, I figured a fun guy is a fun guy, so we just piled on more cremini.

Our first level of improv was the sesame seed buns. The local bunnery was out, so Shera swiped some egg jizz on some plain buns, threw on some sesames and cured them in the oven. Here's Shera giving up the Vanna hands for her handiwork.
Image

I really didn't pay attention to what drink was suggested to go along with this installment, so I got the one with the most Old Prospector-sounding name. We can say eleven settlers of Norwegian persuasion died of dysentery at Jacob's Creek in 1842.
Image

Shera's improv wandered into Sinbad territory with this Pioneer salad. Yum...
Image

Traded one of our pack mules to some Shoshone for this firesauce. eteiH!
Image

The Pioneer... a little sloppy due to an earlier bun slide-off, but still good.
Image

I could have used some more rosemary taste, but the aioli was good and went great with the cheese. I'm not sure if it seemed good simply because we had a short break, or because it was actually a stellar burger, but we ate ourselves into meat coma nonetheless.

Score

Frank's is ok. I think Sysco owns them, or at least I suspect so because Frank's can be found in every office cafeteria I've ever eaten at.

THE SOUTHERN BELLE

<declared>

I'm not a huge fan of slaw. Not really at all. Ever. If mayo is cum of the homeless, slaw is their lower colonic. The grilled sourdough, on yon other hand, was heavenly. Let's just say I grilled and ate the rest of that entire loaf down yonder over the next two days. But...Femtoots really liked this one, calling it the greatest burger assembly since the Miss Daisy. Given her new burger-salad resolve, I can understand that. I imagine such ingredients would make for a flavorful and refreshin' salad while fannin' oneself under the magnolia tree.

We drank the Malbec on the left. Other than "mint juleps" at the "cotillion," I don't know what southern belles drink. Loog?

Sourdough bread is one of humanity's greatest accidents.
Image

The Southern Belle. We cut our pepper slaw in thick strips, not like the finely julienned stuff on the site. As you can see, quite the salad-y burger, but not really my cup of sweet tea.
Image

Not a fan, but I'll admit that it's due to longstanding prejudices (another southern tradition!) against shredded vegetables and mayonnaise. In the spirit of southern hospitality, I'll defer to Femtoots' score.

Looks tasty. I dig slaw, but I got that from my pappy's affinity for it as a side dish. As an alternate, this would probably be good with some thick hunks of ham instead of burger.

Listen, toots, you're basically going to have to go back and do all of these again so you can melt the cheese.

Most of the sloppy Southern sluts I've stunk around with had an affinity for Seagrams and 7up.
Although, I've never broke out the Franzia.
Time for a loosey-goosey experimentato.

To add to this convo: most of the rich chicks I hung out with at UGA drank Vodka tonics or wine (usually Chardonnay or Merlot). True Southern Belles don't drink in front of gentlemen callers.

i think this is above a beyond a simple "guilty pleasure". i think that should only be eaten if you want it to be the last sandwich of your life.
