"Rahm Emanuel was thrown off the ballot for mayor of Chicago today by an appellate court panel, a stunning blow to the fund-raising leader in the race," the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Emanuel, a former congressman from Chicago who was President Obama's chief of staff until late last year, is expected to appeal to Illinois' Supreme Court.
The legal issue is whether he remained a resident of the city while working in the White House.

Residency requirements seem kind of silly to me to begin with. If the voters want an out-of-staters to run their city why should they be denied that possibility. Seems antiquated to me. I'd let Steve Jobs run NOLA from his offices in Cali if he'd consider the job.

Residency requirements are in place to protect the local machine. They control the pursestrings locally, the only threat to their establishment is from deep outside pockets.

He didn't really win yet. Not that it speaks to your overall point regarding his effectiveness in the political machine. I would have been surprised more if he lost his petition for a stay given the circumstances.

He won the day he decided to get in....everything else is a distraction.

The decision today only means that he can have his name on the ballot if the ballot are printed before the Supreme Court hears the case. It's not a definitive decision on whether he can run. It's not surprising given the circumstances. It has little to do with him as a political machine. His lawyers deserve some credit though. But it's a pretty standard plea.

If he is able to run, I agree he was going to win the election from the day he entered the race.

I'm thinking 2020 is a possibility possibility.
The way it stands now, I expect Obama to lose in 2012 only to win again in 2016 if he runs after the country gets another taste of 4 years of the repuglicans.

Edit: but I really think Obama wins again in 2012 because the economy should hopefully improve by then.

People like Rahm Emanuel don't get elected president in this country. (and I don't mean Jews but I guess that's true, too). I would classify him as "not electable".

He comes off as an arrogant prick. It's fitting for the Chicago tough guy persona but not the presidency.

He's too short to be elected President. And yes, sadly, I do believe the electorate is that shallow.
