I don't use a dock and just plug mine into my main stereo. If you've already got a stereo, no need to get some crappy little thing to play the iPod on. The one suggestion I would give going that route is to get one of the chords that connect to the iPod docking output to stereo patch cords. The sound difference when I went to something like that from using the headphone output into the stereo was unexpectedly dramatic.

I am curious about this thread though as I'd like to grab a cheap iPod deal to put in my office at work instead of just using my shitty laptop speakers.

I already connect my iPod to two different stereo systems in my house using the headphone jack. I may look into that dock adapter, though, but I don't have any real problems with the way it sounds as is.

Those stereo systems are not portable, though, and I was looking for something small but decent-sounding to use in the bedroom, nursery, and kitchen. Mostly it would just be in the bedroom. I'd like to have the dock feature so I could charge it there.

And if it's a good portable dock that I could take outdoors, that might come in handy as well.

I still use the Brookstone one I mentioned earlier in the thread quite a bit at cookouts, tailgates, etc. and stand by it. It seems to be a bit more than you'd like to spend though.

Yeah, I looked at that. The price isn't too bad, but it's not really the ideal thing.

Most of the time this thing is going to be sitting on a bookshelf.

i ended up with the bose deal and i love it. it sounds great and is fully portable with a long lasting battery as well as the option to have it plugged in. it is a little pricey, but after having gone the cheaper route years ago i just didn't want to take a chance of wanting something better again after a while. i think i'm now set for a long time.

if portability isn't totally a deal breaker, we got this thing from costco a few years ago for $150 i think, and it sits in our bedroom:

Cool, I'll look into that Costco thing.

I may end up going the Bose route after all. It looks like the Altec Lansing setup that everyone loved has been discontinued.

Man does it seem like nobody will vouch for their shit plugging up with the 6th gen Nano. I don't want her to have to use the headphone jack, I want that shit to charge up.

You're the first person I know of with a 6th gen Nano.

She waded in, and the dude at the store steered her this way. He waved at every dock stereo and said "it works with all of 'em" but I'm skeptical. I know it may "work" via the headphone jack, but does it dock / charge?

Only person I know with one is the Mother-in-law, which is completely unhelpful to you as she probably doesn't know what a dock is. The nano is basically her appliance that allows her to walk around the neighborhood as Celine Dion soundtracks each step.

Does it have the same kind of connection port as other iPods? If so, it should work.

It *looks* like it does, Drink, but I can't be sure. I see online a shot of it with kinda the normal Apple white cord going into it, with a wide blade connector.

Man, it really should work with any iPod dock. Just get a cheap-ish, newer model one to be safe. Do not get an iLove, though. I've only had personal experience with that brand, and the one I have sucks.
