They're still doing their Faces worship, but this time with a mostly acoustic approach that's surprisingly satisfying. I can see this one being a grower.

I'm calling this one my 2011 album of the month; Tanner I think you'd really like this record, I don't know if you've heard much Diamond Dogs but this is definitely worth checking out.

Also, I got a handful of records but only one has really made an "impression" on me so far - haven't even listened to much yet.

#1 - Nicolas Jaar - Space is Only Noise
- Sort of abstract techno/house with a lot of real world samples and I believe some live drumming. It's sort of what James Blake's earlier LPs sounded like, rather than his full length. Really love it.

The other best album I've heard so far is Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming, which I believe might be on Daptone. It's sort of got that Lee Fields vibe from a couple years back but I think it's way better. Retro southern soul. I don't like most Daptone releases all the way through, but I seriously love this one.

Only other things I've listened to more than once:
Wanda Jackson
Isolee
Fergus & Geronimo
G-Side

I am basically doing 15-20 word reviews of everything I listen to in 2011. May not make sense to everyone, but it'll help me remember, when i got to make my top 20 list in December...

I've never heard any Diamond Dogs songs.

Wanda certainly isn't. She's very much the weak link on The Party Ain't Over. I've really tried with it, but she sings like she doesn't even know what day of the week it is. The score here is:

Jack White - 0
Father Time - 1

I listened to Wanda Jackson twice now. I think it works best when Jack White kept her in her comfort zone - Shakin' All Over and Rip It Up. Rum and Coca Cola is just an odd choice that doesn't work well on the album at all. You're criticism is dead on for songs like "Busted";she just wonders through it.

Thunder on the Mountain is a great example of the whole album. She has moments where she's 20 again but then moments where it seems like she's just singing random words on a page. Thunder on the Mountain is ripe for a better cover. It's a great song. That neither Dylan nor Wanda Jackson are vocally up fully unleashing at this point in their lives.

On the whole, I like it and I enjoy hearing her with JW's production but it's not good enough to leave any lasting impression on me.

Two records I've connected with in a big way thus far -
Hayes Carll - Kmag YoYo
Robert Pollard - Space City Kicks (his most tuneful in years)

Still absorbing and enjoying -
Jonny
Smith Westerns
James Blake

New & Intriguing -
Destroyer - Kaputt
Apex Manor - The Magical Night of Drinking

Did nothing for me -
Mind Spiders
Cloud Nothings

Disapppointed -
Wanda Jackson
DBT
Telekinesis

Is there a Diamond Dogs link available?

I listened to that Diamond Dogs and I actually liked the music for the most part, its pretty close to being something I could really dig, but the vocalist (I think they only have one?) has like the most generic, boring and not good voice.

I'll third the WANDA JACKSON. Fun as hell, with a little Jack White signature quirk thrown in to a retro-sounding album. Lots of horns on this one, which I don't normally like, but the arrangements call for them. It's a pretty BIG sounding record (and Tanner: not in a "majestic" MMJ or Band of Horses way)

I've also been enjoying Destroyer - Kaputt. The songs do have an 80s feel, but not in a cheesy way. I dig it and have been digging Bejar's records since Rubies. I still don't like New Pornographers though, even if Neko is in the band.

I need to give DBT more listens, and will today so I at least recognize the songs when I see them tonight. But reading that they finally made a record dedicated to the sounds of Muscle Shoals, I get the stripped-down quality they're going for. Nothing really sticks out as a DBT style fist pumping jam, but I'm ok with that. Patterson and Cooley are coming up on the big FIVE-O, so it's not surprising they're mellowing out a bit.

Rads, I speculate the reason the new David Lowery album isn't a Cracker album is because he got married, lives in Athens and was away from the band creative process.

Re: Truckers: I don't think it's a case of mellowing out, but more trying to do too much and not being able to self edit. I STILL haven't made it all the way through Go Go Boots, but have listened to Isbell's record twice, cover to cover, and will probably do so again today. As predicted, with the sun out and temperatures warming, it sounded pretty good yesterday.

Thanks for the Diamond Dogs link. I haven't turned the corner with them yet the way some of you guys have but I always enjoy hearing what they're doing. They're totally a "good on shuffle" band.

Someone shoot me the Diamond Dogs link - they've been good on some Monger Mixes.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that Wanda Jackson kinda sucks.

This almost reminds me of The Faces and The Waterboys or Saw Doctors playing together. The guy doesn't have as distinct a voice as Rod the Mod, but he has a bit of an accent. I like it. Mellower than expected.
