Here's one I discovered in the vinyl vaults at my old college radio station. Punk pushed to the thrash limits, but instead of being violent and aggro, this stuff is just speedy fun. Even for it's time it sounds a little thin, but I still love to spazz out to those ridiculously fast drums.

One more to make it an even three:

Another debut album. Brian Baker from Minor Threat on guitar, and Dave Smalley (he left the band after this first album though) on vocals. Later he went on to form Down By Law, a band I liked in the 90s. I'd simply say this is basically a great mixture of those two bands, but in general it's a good "bridge" album between the hardcore heard from 5 years before and the more melodic punk that was due to explode about 8 years later. Ian Mackaye produced this.

(Note: this is the reissue with some bonus tracks/live stuff tacked on)

I think pretty much everything I was going to post has been mentioned: Master of Puppets, Life's Rich Pageant, EVOL, Reign in Blood

Nice work on Rads posting The Coolies - Dig. Obscure Atlanta band... I'm sure Bloor, Derris and GAR should hear it just because of where they're from.

This came out in '86, but wasn't their finest hour:

Image

But the one I can't believe hasn't been mentioned yet, especially by those in their early/mid-Thirties...

Image

Rick Rubin, No Sleep til Brooklyn, Kerry King, Paul Revere. Fuck man, this thing blew 7-year-old mind, and I'll still pull it out from time to time if I need a party album.

'86 also saw releases from the Cro-Mags and Youth of Today, but I much prefer AOD and Dag Nasty.

Seriously, I have absolutely no recollection of EVER even seeing that Queen album.

Power pop fans, take notice. Green were one of those bands that really should have been huge, but just suffered from really poor timing. Put simply, these are just a bunch of great rock n' roll songs, with great hooks, played with enthusiasm. And recorded kinda poorly.
Live footage from 1987:

Highlander is what got me into that Queen album too.

There's no denying that it is cheesy. But the songs have great melodies, great guitar by Brian May and basically anything Freddie sings I'm gonna love.

I used to have this. There are a couple of great songs on there but, overall, not a great album by any stretch.

Listened to this today, fantastic 80's alterna-pop from Jon Langford et al. Here they lose the fractured Au Pairs/Gang Of Four sound of Atom Drum Bop and just crank out great tune after great tune. One of the better live shows, too, back in the day. Langford's impersonation of Joe Strummer is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.

Not his very best solo album (IMO), but others would disagree. And, it is up there. His howl is as clear and haunting as ever and he's still got the way underrated and overlooked Duane Aslaksen on lead guitars. The man is a freaking beast. Also Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) on bass and Paul Zahl (Flamin' Groovies) on drums.
Songs like "Don't Slander Me", "Nothing In Return", and "Crazy Crazy Mama" show the influence that Buddy Holly had on Roky's songwriting moreso than anywhere else in his catalog. A great one.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT THAT ONE!

If not the very best album of 1986, certainly the one which best encapsulated that moment in time.

If I had a list back then undoubtedly the 1 spot that year for me. I'll be listening to it tomorrow if I can dig it out.

Just bought this one on Amazon for my wife (she was a huge fan). Giving it a first listen now and, despite the dated production, this was a good purchase. Excellent songs.

I've had this LP for several years and stayed away from it because of the terrible cover art -- and that I have tons of other unplayed stuff I was more curious about.

I finally listened to this and I really like it. Some really solid garage rock. It reminds me of a slightly more raucous and raunchy version of The Murder City Devils.
