DW - the Cincinnati Museum of Art is actually pretty damn good

other music venues:
20th Century Theatre
aforementioned Southgate House in Newport, KY (a block down from a Hofbräuhaus).
Madison Theatre and Mad Hatter are in Covington, KY
Northside Tavern is in the Northside of Cincy

I actually like Skyline chili, so screw all the naysayers. It doesn't have much substance, but the seasoning (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate) is good.

I was actually kinda pissed when I saw Sloppy Seconds is playing at Mad Hatter next weekend instead of this.

But thanks, sounds like some places to check out, will probably check out some beer and the art museum, and maybe eat some chili.

The art museum is pretty cool in Mt. Adams. Great Thai restaurant to eat close by there is called "Teak".

Cincinnati doesn't really use the Creation Museum as a selling point. On the other hand, the Underground Railroad museum is supposed to be excellent, a lot of reading and expensive, but worth it. I've never been.

and Northside Tavern is almost across the street from Shake it Records. The Comet is nearby and they have excellent food (burritos) at a super value.

Well, Hofbraushaus wasn't my kinda thing. The beer was good enough but the whole area reeked of tourist trap to me, reminding me of the landing back home where people generally send tourists but everyone else avoids. We drank a beer and got out of there. Maybe the beer garden outside in summer would be OK, but not my deal.

Ended up at The Comet and that was much better. Good beer selection, tasty burritos, nice vibe, fun band playing a jazzy laid back kinda Zydeco/Americana mishmash. Saw Shake It Records but it was closed. Probably gonna hafta head back over there as my travel partner wants to go in the vintage clothes shop next to The Comet. Looking like museum day today and then deciding on a band to check out later on.

Oh, yea, I forgot to mention the hofbrauhaus was a bit touristy in a bachelor / bachelorette party kind of way. Stay away from Newport on the Levy across the street. The Southgate house down there is the best thing going, but if you don't like blues, then maybe next time.
This thread isn't really selling Nati as a city.
Is that why they are called "The NATI-onal" ? You could have put together a cheap tour of the places that the Devendorfs and Berninger hung out.

Cincinnati is probably a better place to live than to visit.

Ended up having a nice time. Had my fill of irony at the Creation Museum, which is really fascinating in a whole...I can't believe there are a shit ton of people who believe all this sorta way. Then checked out the Contemporary Art Museum, which was really nice. Great facility and a nice Shepard Fairey mural in the lobby (saw a few of his things still up around town it seems were installed last year). There was also some fun stuff based on motorcycles and biker culture as well as a traveling exhibit from Mexico city that was fun.

Picked up a couple records at Shake It, which is really quite a great record store. I couldda spent way more there but was being thrifty. Also checked out the vintage clothes place next to Comet after that and saw a kitchen table I liked but couldn't even consider because of transporting. Nice place though.

After that checked out the Cincinnati Art Museum and it was nice, although the contemporary section is pretty tiny and that's my main interest. They did have a decent temporary exhibit though and again a nice facility, girl was impressed with one of the statues in the ancient section, but I don't know enough about its import to care much on that one.

Checked out Teak for dinner and it was indeed pretty tasty. Interesting neighborhood, those houses on the hills with the nice city views look pretty cool. Whole town really with the hillside views was pretty. Ended up being cheap and heading to Motr for a free show after. Mediocre shoegaze bands, but a decent place to hang out and tried a couple local beers that were good. Neighborhood looked like someplace I'd want to explore more if I wasn't taking off the next day.

Anyway, nice city, and I'm sure if I had more time I'd have been able to keep easily occupied and I'm sure I missed plenty of good stuff, was just starting to get my bearings really. Also checked out a shit ton of Roadside America type attractions on the ride there and back (the cemetery where Colonel Sanders in buried in Louisville is pretty amazing, not so much for his grave as some really old stones and an extensive civil war soldier section) so overall I lovely weekend and I'd definitely feel like if I ended up back in Cincinnati I'd look forward to finding out more.
