According to Beth Pinsker at dealnews.com.

1.Car insurance. Rates are now at an average of $1,000 per year, but going up faster than inflation. That's especially so because insurers are adding on new high-tech monitoring abilities and passing along the costs. So not only are you going to pay more, but your privacy controls are going to go down.

2.Chocolate. There is a veritable chocolate crisis going on in the world, and that has as much to do with global finance as it does with weather. Cocoa is at a 30-year high, and demand is only growing. Expect to see fancier presentations even of basic chocolate -- meaning smaller boxes for bigger prices.

3.VoIP services. Now that taxes have hit the voice-over-IP market, rates will go up as fast -- or faster -- than those of traditional telephone service providers. It doesn't help that new free VoIP services over smart phones provide killer competition. Expect struggling companies, like Vonage, to keep raising rates directly, and or just tacking on extra fees.

4.Airfare. Even if you see an abundance of ads for $1 fares and the like, don't believe the hype. The total cost for traveling on an airplane is going up, and will continue to go up in 2011. Airlines have had such success with added fees for baggage, seating, snacks and blankets that they're not yet done imagining other things to charge you extra for.

5.Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS is coming, and it's not going to be cheap. The price will likely be in the $300 range in the U.S., based on the pricing announced in Japan for the February release of the device. That's a lot more than any other handheld gaming device on the market. What will you get for your money? An 8-ounce handheld game system with great resolution, three cameras, and wireless connectivity.

6.Coffee. The world's coffee supply is contracting, and prices are soaring. Coffee futures jumped 40% last year, and there's no end in sight for the rise. Even the smallest coffee shops are being hit by the price increases, meaning a more expensive cup of joe for you.

7.Music. In all the great excitement about the Beatles finally coming to iTunes, it probably escaped the notice of a lot of people that individual songs were priced at $1.29, not the typical 99 cents of the last few years. Don't think that's just because it's the Beatles. Apple starting raising prices in 2009, and you'll be seeing prices edge higher throughout 2011 on digital music-buying sites.

8.Dollar menus. This change has been coming for a while, but the fast-food chains have been reluctant to pull the trigger once and for all to up the cost of their value menus to more than a dollar. McDonald's has already started to dismantle its dollar menu, and it's going to happen wholesale pretty soon.

9.Sports tickets. Almost every major league sport -- and a lot of minor league ones too -- is still passing along the costs of new stadiums and extras to their fans. For the Yankees, for example, that means tickets will be up 47% for non-premium seats in 2011. The most expensive field-level seats will be $260.

10.Ammunition. You might not think of ammunition prices as something to worry about, but if you're a hunter or if you're concerned about the budget of your local police precinct or the nation's military, you might want to pay attention. Ammo prices have been going up steadily over the past several years, and will rise again in 2011, all because the metals they're made of are going up in price and the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are increasing demand.

11.Movie tickets. Movie ticket prices go up every year, but 2011 could be a time of major increases for two key reasons: online streaming and 3D. The popularity of streaming movies through subscription services like Netflix has cut deeply into movie studio profits from DVD sales and from cable on-demand purchases, so they have to make up the difference somewhere. The advent of 3D means that studios can tack on extra fees for the experience, even if viewers would rather watch a regular 2D movie.

I don't understand why the Nintendo 3DS was thrown in there. It never existed before so it's hard to say it'll cost "more". That part basically just looks like an advertisement which I guess it probably is.

Helium Prices Will Balloon As World Runs Out

Expensive party balloons of the future represent just the tip of the problem in a world that faces a looming helium shortage, according to a Nobel Prize Laureate. Globally, prices have more than doubled in recent years.

Robert Richardson, a physicist at Cornell University, told New Scientist last week that balloons should cost around $100 apiece based on the current helium supply. He also predicted that the supply would run out within about 25 years.

But an artificial cap on the price of the U.S. government-owned helium supply means that the price has still not risen accordingly along with skyrocketing demand.

I've noticed this. The thing is, this is causing cds to not go away as quickly as they should be. The new Iron and Wine was $6.99 for the cd, while the downloads were like $8.99-10.99. So, why would I download a record when I can buy the cd, rip it and flip it for a few bucks used on Amazon?

It's a curious list--mostly that she qualifies some of the rising prices (futures, economy, etc) but offers no explanation for others.

Either way, that's a dramatic price lowing from 18.99 for a cd from just a decade ago.

I don't think I ever paid that even a decade ago, because I stayed out of mall stores. But, yeah yr right the average price has dramatically been reduced. Those said mall stores (like FYE) played with all single cds for $9.99 a few months ago. Guess it didn't work since most of them are closing.

I'm convinced now that that whole list is just a bizarre advertisement for the Nintendo 3DS.

I mean now that I took a look at what dealnews.com is.

Well, maybe not at your local club but I think it's generally been reported that 2010 was one of the worst years on record for the concert biz.

Countless big acts outright canceled tours due to still sky high ticket prices.

LOTS of big tours had their tickets discounted down to a few bucks to get people to come.

I think we'll see a recognition of this in 2011 and things will be more moderately priced.

I'd pay $16 to see you do it.

Tell that to whomever was talking about Fleet Foxes tickets being $50 in their town.

I distinctly remember paying around $35 for a Radiohead show in 2001 and thinking that was WAAAAY high (bring on the flames). I think I read the average price of a concert ticket for a large summer tour in 1996 was $32 and that average has nearly doubled in the last decade.

I try to keep ticket prices down with my acts, but when they want X amount to play a gig, I have to deliver it to the best of my ability as that's what they hired me to do. Sure, agents are partly to blame, but damn if some acts and their managers #1 think they're worth more than they are, #2 have to make all of their money on the road so they inflate their price to compensate for lost income.

Another problem with big acts is, yes, they charge too much and consumers have finally said "no" to high ticket prices, but more of the reason people aren't going is because a majority of the hit-makers and high record sellers don't have a true fanbase that get excited about seeing them live.

I think this is a big problem. It's part of the new way the record industry works now. You have 7inch or an EP and every one in the world knows about you. But you've never toured or just barely have. People like you but they're waiting for the next cool single that will play for a car commercial.

In the past, you grew a fanbase by touring and releasing 2-3 albums that did well but weren't the "next big thing."

I'll be curious to know if Fleet Foxes sell out those shows. That seems absurdly high.

I don't begrudge any band getting paid and striking while the iron is hot but there is such a thing as pricing yourself out of the market.

Dads have a lot of discretionary money to spend.

Yes there is. On the other hand, people will usually pay more to see their favorite acts playing an underplay in a smaller venue. For instance, I paid $127 per ticket to see Neil Young solo at the Ryman, but I would be hesitant to pay the same price if he were playing Bridgestone Arena.

Fleet Foxes tickets are $27 and $30 here (not including Ticketbastard surcharges).

i think dude said seating capacity was like 100 for the fleet foxes show. i understand the econ & logic of demanding that much in a metro area where sheep flock. sufjan was asking $80 for 1000 capacity last fall & sold out in minutes. i've no idea who these people are.

stu, what do you mean by lost income?
