They've sorta seemed broken up for a while now, what with releasing no new material as Jack does a ton of other stuff. I still did hold out some hope of getting another record, but I guess at least this way they don't just go downhill and start releasing crap.

Still does seem a bit a shame as at least for me the White Stripes were far and away better than Jack's other stuff, some of which I do like just fine.

Most likely it was Meg rather than Jack that called time on the Stripes.

I think the WS are an anomaly though because they were still relatively a big band popularity-wise. Even though they were hiatus, I don't think people thought they'd hang it up entirely. Maybe eek out at least one or two more albums.

I agree. I was more addressing Cotton and TJ42's insinuation that this is basically a marketing ploy.

I'm never really sad per se when a band breaks up but I always enjoyed them and was genuinely interested in what they'd do next.

Jack White was maybe the only Guitar God rock star to come out of the last decade.

Within a tired genre he managed to breathe new life into it.

Guy's tone was sick with high face melting capability live. Great band.

Prepare for the decade of Kurt Vile.

I expect he'll only get more interesting outside the context of WS. That was a pretty limited concept that he took as far as it could go.

I wasn't implying that it's a marketing gimmick at all, I just like that he transferred ownership to the listener.

that said, maybe it is a marketing gimmick. The White Stripes were -for all intents and purposes- a solo project. Even if this happened because of Meg, it's because she got bored of waiting around while Jack produced albums for forgotten legends and went on another Raconteurs tour. I mean, it's not like Meg is gonna dive into some other musical endeavor (or at least I hope not). But would she get bored in say 5 years? Maybe. Would Jack be willing to play WS songs again? Why not?

Using this logic, bands should just stop fucking saying they broke up. It's stupid and almost always results in an overpriced, overhyped "reunion" tour within a decade. Fuck it, say you're going on hiatus, or don't say anything at all. There's plenty of acts out there who go a decade between albums without releasing a press statement.

I tend to agree.

I don't buy that bit. He's done some OK stuff outside of the White Stripes, and I certainly enjoyed the project he did with Loretta Lynn and like what he has done with Wanda. But, any music he's made outside White Stripes has been less interesting to me. I mean, I like what he's done with The Raconteurs OK and to an even lesser extent The Dead Weather, but for me he's yet to come up with anything as good as The White Stripes and I tend to doubt he will. Not too many artists capture lightening in a bottle twice.

I'm interested to see what Meg will do now. Will she get involved in a new band, or become a receptionist?

I'm a big fan of JW as an overall artist. Plays guitar, piano, and drums and is pretty good at all three. Started a pretty cool record label and has done interesting producing work. Released good albums in three different bands. And beat the shit out of the dude from the Von Blondies. I'll miss the stripes but i look forward to his next project.

Today's news made me nostalgic. White Blood Cells was the buzz album around the time that the old CMJ days were kicking off.
