Hmmmm, I'm intrigued by this guitarrorists comp.

But, I have to point out this classic Mudhoney. They're what I think of when I hear the word "grunge". Dirty guitars and dirty lyrics.

My introduction to non-Modern Lovers JR and just a fun little album. This is the album that really made me fall in love with the whole JoJo experience. It's a nice mix of studio stuff, and live recordings that really capture the live, solo Jonathan vibe. Especially this song.:

This one was pretty big for me too, even though I kind of disliked it the first time I heard it. I thought it would be too twee for most here.

I really like this album too. Not as much as their debut but still quite good. I'm somewhat surprised to see it on BG's list.

They were signed to Creation on the strength of covering Teenage Fanclub's Everything Flows.
As the story goes, on weekends they recorded some demos with their new neighbor Matthew Sweet, which eventually, were just released as their debut record. As I recall it was in NME's Top 50 of 1991. I bought this in '99-2000 after Joe Pernice told me at a gig it was one of his favorite records of all time.

RIYL : Byrds, Big Star, Power Jangle

"Ballerina Out of Control" is one of my favorite songs from that year.

I always liked it even more than the debut. I've never thought of them as being very twee at least not when compared to Belle & Sebastian and other bands like that. Admittedly, they are not characteristic of the average album I get excited by today but I'm surprised that my liking them would be that surprising. I used to listen to a lot more indie in the CMJ days and the first few years of obner. I was big fan of that shimmery guitar sound in the 80's and early 90's and still like it today. I've probably seen them close to ten times.

This makes me happy :D
I still regularly listen to their "Acustico MTV" disc that you sent me back when we actually mailed discs to each other. When Russo belts out "...sofrer!" at the end of "Faroeste Caboclo", it gives me chills. Reminds me of Kurt Cobain unleashing that "shiverrr" at the end of their Unplugged album. It's almost as if both guys knew their time was almost up and they were going to leave absolutely nothing in the tank following these performances.

Yeah that's a really good one. I love the NY/PIL/Joni covers too. Thanks again for the introduction to them. On a later trip, I ended up buying the DVD for the Acustico MTV show and a box set of all their studio albums.

I made a couple 8-song 1991 mixes yesterday, I don't think you can post soundcloud streams on the board, so they're here: http://inawhiteroom.wordpress.com/2011/ ... 991-mixes/

The first one is mostly dreamy/shoegaze type stuff and the second is all hip hop

The Orchids – Bringing You The Love
Teenage Fanclub – Guiding Star
Brighter – Ocean Sky
Ride – Sennen
Chapterhouse – Autosleeper
Mercury Rev – Blue And Black
Primal Scream – I’m Comin’ Down
Slowdive – Brighter

Chubb Rock – The One
Yz – When The Road Is Covered In Snow
Ed O.G. & The Bulldogs – Dedicated To The Right Wingers
Del The Funkee Homosapien – Sunny Meadowz
KMD – Peachfuzz
Freestyle Fellowship – Sunshine Men
Godfather Don – Losers
Main Source – Live At The Barbeque (Ft. Nas, Akinyele & Joe Fatal)

It doesn't get much weirder than this. Even the Bongwater record that I posted seems sane in comparison. Or, at least, that record sounds like it was trying to be weird. In comparison, this record sounds genuinely insane; genre-hopping all over the place, from genre to non-existent genre. So, so weird. Deeply, purely, genuinely weird in a way that only Ween, and maybe Mr. Bungle can be.

Awesome, glad you dig it.

I was just excited to find out that there was a video for "Hitting the Wall". I mean, such as it is.

can't believe i forgot that mudhoney as it's the first one i ever heard by them.

i'll add this, which i recently just rediscovered. unfortunately, most of their albums are oop now though i just ordered punishment for decadence.

I haven't heard this album in a long time but you're right, it is quite good.

I always enjoyed going to see the David Grisman Quintet...they would play without microphones on any of the instruments so everyone in the crowd was completely silent and throughout these incredible compositions the tension would build to the point where when the song ended, the crowd roar would be deafening. Incredible stuff.

Jesus paper. Is it good or bad that I probably know 80% of the words to 90% of those songs?

Also, in an attempt to not go with the obvious Cypress songs, they missed the marks. pigs runs that jam.

First heard this when I was DJing at my college radio station and was immediately pulled in. Any electronic dance song that samples the Velvet Underground ("Birmingham") is okay with me. Dark, gothic dance music for heroin addicts. But in a good way.

Well if you're gonna go that route, you might as well throw out Pearl Jam - Ten, Metallica - s/t, and Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II.

Also FWIW, I like Apocalypse 91 way less than the two PE albums before it, maybe even less than Bum Rush the Show.
