I'll be interested in hearing it in whatever way I can get it the easiest. If I'm getting a physical copy, I don't really want booklets of artwork. I'd be cool with a simple digi-pack with bound pages of artwork like No Age and a ton of acts have done recently.

Oh come on

You know that entering into any kind of argument with Dale is exasperating.

nah, i'm just pointing out how ignorant your comments are.

some of us 'fans' actually enjoy supporting the artists we love, and don't spend time whining about they're motives.

You are the densest fucking person on the planet and "ignorance" is your fucking middle name. I buy more music than you do from a larger variety of artists. I KNOW THIS. All your talk about supporting artists is such wholesale bullshit. You are practically the goddamn leak bandit, and the fact that you buy a few deluxe vinyl packages here and there does not make up for that.

so because i listen to leaks means you somehow 'KNOW' that you purchase more music than me?

jesus dude, you're a moron. this is hilarious.

Drinky is just upset that he doesn't have enough money is his bank account to cover the Radiohead album.

Is it? I do know that. We've been posting on the same message board for nigh on 7 years now. You've posted about your purchasing and listening habits several times, and I've posted about mine. I've paid attention.

i don't post about every single release i order or even listen to. at the end of the day, you have absolutely no idea of what i actually purchase. so, you know nothing. just admit it.

I would be willing to bet on what I've claimed to know.

At any rate, it's all beside the larger point. You managed to piss me off with your preschooler argument tactics, and I will admit, it's pretty embarrassing that I let you do that.

I think the point is Radiohead are the best marketers in the business. They know how to make people talk about their new album.

This is the most passionate music thread we've had in awhile. Had to be said.

And at the core of it was, really just:

Drinky: I wish they'd just sell the cd at a cd price from the get-go instead of making me wait
Dale: Don't question them, they are geniuses

Yes, thanks. Or they could just sell regular vinyl at a regular vinyl price.

Before with In Rainbows, I did pay a little for the initial download. And then I bought the CD when it came out. I'm not going to pay $9 for mp3s when I know I will most likely want a physical copy eventually.

I wouldn't either, fwiw. My first choice out of those three would be "cd at cd price." My first choice period would be "vinyl with mp3 download link for less than $20." But they ain't offering that. (And I don't really want this record.)

I'm sure I'll grab a listen to this, but I've either really got to be a fan of an artist to want to spend that kinda cash for the deluxe vinyl package or have heard it and know I really like it AND really like the artwork. I think they'll be selling that to fanatics only. To me, it's not being cheap to say...I could spend $50 on a Radiohead album...or I could spend that $50 on 3 other albums. They are definitely pricing the vinyl at a level where people have to like Radiohead far more than the more traditionally priced options. Or, I guess be a huge fan of graphic design.

But, just for a comparison, I did buy the OFF! vinyl package, four 7 inch records all designed by Ray Pettibon with a nice box to hold it all together, and I appreciated the extra effort on the design and packaging. Then again, they didn't charge $50 for it, more like $20. Had the vinyl for that been $50 I'd have probably appreciated the digital files just fine.

Bottom line is it is worth it if you enjoy it enough that you feel you get your money's worth. But, I don't think it is at all out of line to pass on something that prices itself significantly above other options for your musical enjoyment.

I weigh this against $50 worth of shit in my Amazon wishlist right now, and this thing loses big time.

Fuck, I could get that Orange Juice box set for less. Maybe this is just the occasion to do that.

It's not the best model for every band, but this is a wise move for Radiohead. They have built the type of fanbase that will buy this.

It's a combination of these two. I actually think they did the "pay what you want" thing just to see what would happen, and I think they are doing this to see how it will sell.

They're like test marketers, but for their own product, which is pretty cool. I don't even want to hear this, but as someone who is very interested in the marketing and advertising business as it pertains to niche products (or large products marketing to niches) this whole thing is fascinating - more fascinating than any album they've released since OK Computer, IMO (*ZING!!!*)

Agreed. I only KIND-OF like Radiohead. They are geniuses within their style, it's just not my thing. When it comes to marketing, Radiohead and NIN/Reznor are really interesting to watch. I check out all of their releases just because of this.
