Goddamn Drinky, you somehow managed to make Dalen look like a reasonable human being. Can't believe you pulled it off, but I've got to hand it to you.

It's a combination of these two. I actually think they did the "pay what you want" thing just to see what would happen, and I think they are doing this to see how it will sell.

They're like test marketers, but for their own product, which is pretty cool. I don't even want to hear this, but as someone who is very interested in the marketing and advertising business as it pertains to niche products (or large products marketing to niches) this whole thing is fascinating - more fascinating than any album they've released since OK Computer, IMO (*ZING!!!*)

Agreed. I only KIND-OF like Radiohead. They are geniuses within their style, it's just not my thing. When it comes to marketing, Radiohead and NIN/Reznor are really interesting to watch. I check out all of their releases just because of this.

same here. the marketing aspect of these artists and their releases in this musical climate is really interesting to me. they could easily just say "here's the record, buy it said date", but choose to make it an interesting experience for their fans.

You cannot have read this thread and actually think this.

Coming from you, of course, this means nothing anyway.

He did, you shitbag. He knows how to comprehend what he reads.

He also didn't take personal issue with it like you did because he hadn't just forked over $50 for some ridiculous fanboy-baiting bullshit.

Christ almighty, Dalen, it's like I insulted your mother or your own kid or something.

Actually, you probably wouldn't have been as upset about that.

And you still have no fucking clue. Still. I would draw you a diagram with very colorful pictures if I could.

I suppose I could, at that. Maybe I will if I get a little more time later today.

I was never riled up at the beginning. I simply had an opinion that you didn't like. You kept at me, though, and congrats, you did it. You riled me up.

You still haven't said a single reasonable thing here or ever demonstrated that you understood what I was saying or what my issue was. You called it ignorant. You called me a moron. God forbid someone have a problem with the latest business strategy from the The Great Holy Radiohead.

Imagine when it actually comes out...

For me personally, I'm intrigued by the artwork since RH has always had great design on their records. But...I'm also trying cut back on buying bulbous boxsets that just take up so much room. As it stands now, I'm probably gonna hold off until a physical cd comes out.

It would be great for the mp3s/wavs to come with a pdf of the artwork. But, I get that they probably want it viewed in a certain context.

Also, I wonder why there is no FLAC or OGG Vorbis formats? Am I remembering In Rainbows differently than what really was offered. Thought those were included.

you're right, i did. you are too dumb to realize that the 'something new' is not referring to the digital album, but the physical product.

anyways, i'm done. :D

good read from Pitchfork:
So Radiohead have set aside the "pay what you want" patronage model that dominated the conversation surrounding the In Rainbows release, yet have retained that album's more important business aspects: Packaging their music as a high-end collectable and controlling and monetizing its leak, which has the effect of creating what these days is a rare, worldwide, collective listening experience. Once again, we all know exactly when we're first able to hear a new Radiohead record and therefore will largely all experience it together, something almost completely lost in today's pop music landscape.

was wondering that too, but they're offering the WAV files, which are probably the actually files that went to press.

according to Tiny Mix Tapes:
Quote:
UPDATE: According to the group's publicist, the digital release is on the band's own Ticker Tape imprint, but the album will also see a more traditional release (CD/12-inch) March 28 via labels XL Recordings, TBD Records, and Hostess Entertainment.

Plus it's easy to take a "chance" like this (or the thing they did with In Rainbows) when you can go out and tour arenas or amphitheaters.

I'm not sure how fascinating this current go 'round is. Seems like a pretty standard fan club type of release deal that many other artists are doing (at least the vinyl w/ mp3 download model). The pay what you want thing they did with In Rainbows was a pretty interesting campaign for sure. Agree with you on that though. The release of that was WAY more interesting than the album. In Rainbows was meh-tastic for me. I tried and tried. Nuth.

Still, any new material and ramp up for the next incarnation of Radiohead is always fodder for the thread posting cannons.
