my favorite Goldfrapp album is her first one, "Felt Mountain". So cool and soothing, totally relaxes me whenever I throw it on.

I need to find my copy of this, because I really, really loved it. It's probably O'Rourke's first real stab at more pop-orientred songwriting and he freaking aces it. (Or maybe that was Eureka, but still...) Great melodies and creative arrangements that are informed by classical sense of harmonies. Completely accessible high-brow pop and something that everybody that posts here should hear. Yeah, definitely.

i like this, but don't know why and also feel a little dirty admitting it

Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Sadly, the last Low album that I really liked. My favorite from the year at the time.

This is probably my favorite album of the whole decade.

Amen.

2001 was a life-changing year for me. Moved from British Columbia to Montreal. Left Phish behind somewhere along the path, and discovered a whole other world music. I'm not great at attaching albums to years (at least not pre-Shmoo Poll), but I know that bands like Low, Dirty Three, Solex, Amon Tobin, Aphex Twin, µziq, Songs: Ohia, Jim O'Rourke (that ...and-a-1-2-3-4 album is great!), others, changed my perception of music, and my very understanding of sound and how it could be treated. I started recording songs, and experimenting with machines. Truly enlightening year, and I'm due for another like it.

Pretty tasty pop punk...a bit more crisp than the Exploding Hearts, should appeal all of you who are digging on the Cute Lepers.

Image
Sultry female vox over a decent ensemble--highlights are "Jennifer" and a wicked Alice Cooper cover are the highlights here. It's not as trashy as their debut, Cream Machine, but that one wasn't released in '01.

2001 found me deep into Zorn/Patton. I played the bejeezus out of these that year.

I'm shocked this album has stayed with me as long as it had. One of my favourites from the decade.

Three that I've pimped many times before:

If you want links or info on either just do a search. Billy G is another fan of that You Am I album - definitely their finest moment (so far).

Also:

Sour Jazz - Dressed To The Left

An NYC band that almost constantly pays tribute to Iggy Pop, and more specifically to Iggy's "New Values" album. Previous albums had Iggy punning names like "No Values" and "Lost for Life", but on this one Sour Jazz started to become their own men. The band features semi-legend Mr. Ratboy on guitar, and his strange sense of riff - a kind of robotic punk rock automaton - is what drives every song. I've included "I Like The City" as well as their version of the Saints' "Messin' With The Kid" on previous mixes.

Back in 2003 when we all posted our favorite albums by year, for 2001 I posted:

Image
Liars - They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top

I feel like that wouldn't be my choice now. Hard to think of what would be though. 2001 was full of some of my then-favorite artists releasing "not as good as their last album" discs: Built to Spill, Bjork, Dismemberment Plan, Radiohead, Mercury Rev...

Oh here's another good one:

Image
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You

That Bicycle Thief is a re-release of a 1999 album, Rads, as I believe we've discussed before.

Dressed is actually nearly all of Lost For Life (one song shy) and about 80% of No Values. Still phenomenal, though.

The 2001 release has a slightly different tracklist and had a much wider distribution, but whatever floats your boat.

And Billz, I forgot that Sour Jazz Dressed To The Left was a compilation of previous stuff and bonus tracks. Still my fave of theirs somehow.

Not much I can call out in that year. I do like that Sparklehorse already mentioned. I'd offer up:

Image

Hiatt's best album since Slow Turning. I'd listen to it a lot more if the sound quality wasn't so bad. Everybody Went Low and All The Lilacs In Ohio are 2 of his best songs, and he's written a shitpot of good songs.

Image

Alexandra Leaving is a frighteningly fine song.

Image

Still my favorite Nick Cave record.
