I pre-ordered the .WAV format. If the album is any good, I'll pay for the CD on March 28. Ironically, I think I paid $5 for In Rainbows, and never bought the CD version because I never fell in love with that album.

I'm not sure how fascinating this current go 'round is. Seems like a pretty standard fan club type of release deal that many other artists are doing (at least the vinyl w/ mp3 download model). The pay what you want thing they did with In Rainbows was a pretty interesting campaign for sure. Agree with you on that though. The release of that was WAY more interesting than the album. In Rainbows was meh-tastic for me. I tried and tried. Nuth.

Still, any new material and ramp up for the next incarnation of Radiohead is always fodder for the thread posting cannons.

See, I think that if Radiohead proves they can make money this way, or build interest, then you'll see more mid-level type bands go this route.

There are bands on the upper tier of the "pop" or country echelon for which this won't matter, and then there are bands that would lose more money than they could ever make by pressing vinyl or whatever for shipping, but there are a good 100 bands for which this model might work. And, they, and their business managers and marketing people are watching (and jacking off).

you're right, i did. you are too dumb to realize that the 'something new' is not referring to the digital album, but the physical product.

anyways, i'm done. :D

good read from Pitchfork:
So Radiohead have set aside the "pay what you want" patronage model that dominated the conversation surrounding the In Rainbows release, yet have retained that album's more important business aspects: Packaging their music as a high-end collectable and controlling and monetizing its leak, which has the effect of creating what these days is a rare, worldwide, collective listening experience. Once again, we all know exactly when we're first able to hear a new Radiohead record and therefore will largely all experience it together, something almost completely lost in today's pop music landscape.

i can't wait to discuss on the day it's released. yay!

not only bands, but this model might apply to websites, app developers, etc.. the guy that started Bandcamp in 2008 was influenced by the way Radiohead released 'In Rainbows', and now Bandcamp is one of the most important sites on the web for artists.

You guys are missing the point.

There is no new business model as far as how the music will be distributed. Rainbows was suppose to be a new business model but nothing has changed. It's all marketing strategies. The next release will be something different. There's always something to build a buzz about their album. Before In Rainbows, they had the big South by Southwest listening party for Hail to Thief (or was that Kid A?) to create excitement.

Incorrect. Radiohead never claimed that the manner in which In Rainbows was delivered was a new business model, it was simply an experiment.

But believe it or not, much has changed. As I stated, Bandcamp arrived, and have created a very successful outlet for artists (new and established), and have also put a massive dent in the primitive format that is MySpace.

I'm not saying they touted it as such. People did. As people in this thread are now about the new release. It's part of the excitement..."this will change everything."

Bandcamp, etc. are great. And they might derive some influence from Radiohead's stunts but major music distribution will remain the same.

This isn't a slight on Radiohead, in fact, I think quite the opposite. I admire them for keeping themselves in the spotlight this far out of the 90's.

That reminds me of the last Raconteurs album cover

def looks like the Raconteurs.

just read that each set of the Newspaper edition is unique. that's pretty crazy, and not sure how, but man that's cool.

also, the CD included with the Newspaper edition is rumored to be an additional full album, similar to what they did with In Rainbows.

I am looking forward to this for sure, however, I am inclined to agree that the pricetag for "the whole package" is a bit lofty for me. I just can't afford to budget $50+ for a Radiohead album and I don't particularly feel any less successful about my life for it. My daughter needs some new clothes for Spring way worse than I need that.

That being said, I have to wonder if all of those vinyl reissues they put out a couple of years ago of their singles for Record Store Day played into this decision at all. Perhaps with that they found out that people were willing to pay an exceptional price for Radiohead music that was already available (and that any given purchaser likely already had) in a different format. A market test of sorts. If indeed that is the case, then I guess I can't fault them for the price as perhaps it was market dictated in a way.

Someone, somewhere, who is way smarter than me should conduct an in depth case study comparing the business models of Pearl Jam and Radiohead, and provide some sort of definitive statement on the evolution of DIY marketing by mid-major/major bands since the Grateful Dead's heyday. I would read that.

Based on Thom's stance, I expect a lot of 3/4 time signatures

Radiohead have tweeted details of a mysterious Tokyo location and time ahead of the release of their new album on Saturday (February 19).

The band posted the message in Japanese on their official Twitter.com page, Twitter.com/radiohead, this morning (17).

It roughly translates as: "Hachiko Square Shibuya, 59 minutes at 18 Friday". The square is one of the notoriously busy 'pedestrian roads' in Tokyo.

Fans are now speculating that the band may appear at the square at 18:59 (JST) tomorrow, which would be 4:59am UK time on Saturday morning. Radiohead have so far not elaborated on what the tweet means, and their spokesperson is yet to reply to a request for further information.

Their new album 'The King Of Limbs' is tipped to feature eight songs, although the band have said that they will not release tracklisting details ahead of its release.

stayed home sick today, and this was a great surprise. 3 plays through now, and i personally love it. the drums especially are going to be incredible live. standouts Morning Mr Magpie, Codex, Little By Little, Give Up The Ghost, Lotus Flower. nice mix of Amnesiac, HTTT, and IR imo.

also, Separator is a fantastic ending. the lyrics lead me to believe this is a double album.
