I've had a copy of Amber for a long time and have been fairly so-so about it. I like it, but nothing spectacular for me, don't listen often. But, I was listening to Incunabula last night, the only other of theirs that I have heard, and was really liking it.

I know they have a much larger catalog, but I don't know where would be a good next step. Anyone got any favorites or ones to avoid?

Maybe I need to go back and listen to Amber again...it's been years.

Well, here's my (approximate) ranking for whatever good it'll do you:

Good stuff:
1. s/t ("LP5")
2. Confield
3. Peel Session 2
4. EP7
5. Envane
6. Amber
7. Incunabula
8. Untilted
9. Gantz Graf
10. Tri-Repetae++

meh:
11. Peel Session 1
12. Cichli Suite
13. Draft 7.0
14. Anti-
15. Chiastic Slide

They have at least 3 distinct periods, and Incunabula and Amber both fall into their earliest one. Both albums are pretty different from each other, but they're also both pretty different from their later work, especially Amber. None of their other albums really sound like that one.

Their later work is a lot closer to Incunabula is terms of being edgier and somewhat "colder" than Amber's relatively warm ambiance. I'd suggest checking out the s/t first, then maybe trying Tri-Repetae++ since it's a lot of people's favorite, and it includes two really good EPs (Garbage and Anvil Vapor) on a bonus disc. Personally, I think the album is a little too repetitive (though aptly named), but the textures and beats on it are great.

More recent stuff like Confield and Untilted are a lot weirder and often very cold and alien sounding. I like both of those a lot, but you'd probably want to wait and check them out later.

Also, keep in mind when reading electronic music reviews on AMG that John Bush is an idiot.

Thanks. I'll see which one of your top couple suggestion turn up first and grab something.

I have Tri-Repetae++ and don't really think I need any more Autechre. I could see you liking it, though... maybe. If you want to try it out, lemme know.

I can honestly saw Draft 7.0 is the worst record I've ever heard.

Yep. Possibly Confield or the Peels.

Do you like any Autechre?

Because really, that album isn't that bad. There are certainly way worse things that fall under the umbrella of electronic/IDM.

It's the only one I've heard.

I'll throw my hat in for Untilted. This thing's an under appreciated gem. Took a little while to warm up to it, but once I got into it, I fell completely in love with it. It marries some of the warmer ambience of their early stuff with the dissonance and abstract pattern clashes that were so much a part of Draft 7.30 and Confield, which is what made those two so cold for most people.

Yeah that looks nice.

I might be tempted by it if I didn't already have pretty much everything on it, about half of which I own as actual physical media.

But yeah pretty much everything from Anti through Gantz Graf is great.

I have one of those Peel Sessions, but haven't listened to it in 8 years or more.

That's a nice looking set. Unfortunately, like pretty much everyone else has said here, I already have most of the music so don't really have a need for this. Good to see his stuff getting a quality treatment though.

Same but that doesn't mean it can't be put on my ol' Amazon wishlist for someone else to grace me with
