I watched DBT on Jimmy Fallon on the web.

I just don't see what you guys see in these guys. Dude does have an interesting voice (at times) though.

Like Lucero, I was once interested so I'll keep checking out new stuff. They are just killing alt country.
I don't love Wilco but at least they seem to reinvent themselves with each album. To my ears, these guys are uninventing themselves.

I love DBT's run up until the last album. It had some decent songs but it felt tired. Seemed like they went in the studio and said, "we need a song about working man getting screwed, etc." It just felt forced where previous albums seemed like they were truly exploring what it meant to be a Southern Man.

I disagree but I really dig them. I think if you look at their albums you can definitely see a shift with each progressing album. I know a lot of people on the board don't like the current album incarnation of the band, but I definitely dig the addition of Jay Gonzalez. Their live shows are incredible, which is why I plunk down money anytime they are within 3 hours.

Songwriting-wise, they bring a tradition of the New South to their lyrics, breaking the walls down set forth by previous generations "hush hush" mentality of keeping one's business personal. Through this they channel Crews, Faulkner and O'Connor giving us a quirky look at hometown stories. While I dig bands like Lucero, they just don't do that.

Also, I don't know that I'd even categorize Wilco in the same strain of music. Just because both occasionally dip into the twang (one more than the other), its kinda apples and oranges musically. I love both bands dearly, so its hard to separate them in my head.

BTW--going to see them tomorrow night and Saturday night in DC. :rockbanana:

I'd rather DBT make the same album over and over again than "reinvent" themselves into whatever Wilco currently is.

Here is my thing with both DBT and Lucero. I am a 46 year (same age a Patterson) old dude that has had 2 great musical loves in my life, Southern Rock and Punk Rock. When I first heard both these bands around 8 or so years ago they represented the realization of a sound and content that I had always wished for but never heard. Maybe I am a slightly apologetic in this respect, and I do agree that certainly Decoration Day/Dirty South are better records than Go Go Boots or The Big To Do. In Lucero's case I actually see no let down in the quality or intensity of their recordings at all. Bottom line is these are far and away my 2 favorite bands and it would take a huge turd from either one of them to even begin to change that. Just one man's perspective.

This is pretty much how I feel about DBT.

I fuh'd up and didn't notice their one LA show until it already sold out. I'm tempted by the Las Vegas show but doubt i'll do it.

DC. 2 nights. DBT+J Roddy Walston and the Business.

Incredible 2 nights of heavy, heavy rocking at the 9:30 Club. Definitely an even higher respect for J Roddy Walston after seeing them live 2 nights. Dang. They're doing a 4-week residency in DC (!!!), so definitely hitting those up.

I've gushed over and over about DBT live, so I'll spare you again but suffice to say they keep upping the ante in my ears.

If anyone is interested, here is night 1. J Roddy's set was recorded both nights too, so as soon as I get those I'll post 'em.

Yeah man, songs like "Joining The Army" do nothing to channel that tradition. Fuckin Lucero :nono: guys like Tanner and I hate this tradition and completely shy away from it.

I'm just giving you the business, but be careful those sweeping generalities.

That's one of the discs that stays in the changer in my truck more or less permanently and yes, it is awesome. Actually, I pretty much dig that whole set.

I finally saw The Secret To A Happy Ending...it's pretty great/sad.

Yeah, it was a well done band doc. I still miss Isbell's songs in the DBT sets.

I'm planning on maiming Shonna in Athens and framing one of you guys.

I'll be there to push Earl on stage once you've maimed Shonna's fingers and framed Bloor for the crime.

I'll take the rap if it gets Jason back in the band.

Finally listened to Go Go Boots for the first time. Not a bad vibe actually, but definitely a downtempo On the Beach kind of album.

Looks like New West is still trying to make money off DBT, granted I really like the last comp they put together as a money grabber, The Fine Print.

Man, the Dirty South is way under represented on that.

Also heavy on the riff rock side of things. Nary a slow tune outside of "World of Hurt".

Still, not a bad intro for the newbie.
