I picked up on this one a few weeks ago. I hate sports talk and sports reporting, but I enjoy this show, although I am a casual sports fan at best. I enjoy that they don't worry with the Big Story Themes that you get everywhere else, and for the most part poke fun or disregard meaningless sports cliches and establishment "wisdom".

Derrris attempts to join the fray......

So, do y'all download these to your phone/ipod and then play them or do you just stream them?

I've tried a couple of times with WTF and Bill Burr's podcasts (streaming them in my car) but they routinely would cut out or need to rebuffer.

Was too annoying. I'm assuming I'm doing it wrong.

I've never listened to a podcast. Not sure there's room in my life for one. Between work, obner, music, tv, movies, kids, masturbation, and wife my day is full.

But these threads always make me want to start. I sort of feel like I've missed my chance and now I'll be like my mom trying to figure out how to work the DVD player.

I subscribe to a few and never get around to listening to them for most of the reasons listed above. (Well, you know the REAL one I'm talking about)

Download to computer and listen to them at work. Occasionally put them on the iPhone. I listen to them a lot while making dinner at home. I have almost zero distractions and a lot of time on my hands.

I play them through iTunes while I'm working.

Download via iTunes, then I dump them onto my shuffle for the long commutes.

All winter, I'm on a bus then a subway then a company shuttle, so 1.5 hours each way of "somebody else driving." I put 8 or 10 podcasts on at the top of the list, then follow them with 6 or 7 albums' worth of songs. When the last podcast finishes, I know it because suddenly it's just music. I listen to tunes until I get back to my desk, and then yank the old podcasts and replace with new, and maybe tweak the songs. In warmer months, it's a motorcycle ride just under an hour each way, and I still listen (earbuds in the helmet), I just have 60 mins less a day.

There's also a regular podcast writeup on maximumfun.org (or at least there was...)

Like Derris, I just can't get into WTF. People (or at least the NYT) have raved about it, but it just rubs me the wrong way.

In addition to working at a computer for an average of 14 hours a day, I get plenty of time for these. Add my shiny new commute, which varies between 40 and 150 minutes.

favorites in bold

regular listening:
Best Show on WFMU (if I missed it live)
Pod F. Tompkast
The Bugle
Never Not Funny
NBA Today
Jordan Jesse Go!
Doug Loves Movies
Superego
Stop Podcasting Yourself
Democracy Now!
Sinner's Crossroads (old gospel music)
Sowntown Soulville (funk/soul)
iFanboy pick of the week

Intermittent (largely depending on guests/news):
Fresh Air
The Economist
BS Report (only if it's about basketball or Friday Night Lights, and even then I get annoyed listening to it)
The Sound of Young America
Comedy Death Ray
UCB Theater Podcast
Best Show Gems
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History and whatever the other one is called (Common Sense?)
Mike Detective
The Basketball Jones
Rachel Maddow
New Yorker: Comment
Thrilling Adventure Hour
How did this get made?
Comedy and Everything Else
Wordballoon
Pop My Culture
the Smartest Man in the World
Stuff You Missed in History Class

there's others, probably.

I just discovered The Tobolowsky Files. Stephen Tobolowsky is a character actor best known (by me anyway) for playing Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day. He's been in a ton of other movies and TV shows and is a great storyteller.

I've heard about this a bunch of times and downloaded it before, but every time I hear his voice, I can only think of his character in Deadwood yelling "TITTIEEEEEEEEES!" and I have to stop.

yup, 2 mentions of that show in one hour. And it was cancelled 4 years ago.

And, quite unbelievably, I've never watched even a second of the show despite having HBO for pretty much the last 15 years.

That's appalling. Especially because I can see you liking this show more than most people.

As a fan of American history, character development, really fucking black humor and violence, it's one of my all-time favorites.

Yeah, I don't really have any explanation for myself.

Yeah, I don't really have any explanation for myself.

We're in the same boat. I missed the beginning and never caught up. I will remedy that when this Apple TV gets set up.

I listened to BS/Klosterman this weekend. Possibly the most entertaining discussion I've heard in years, and thoroughly thought provoking.

Not sure if that's a compliment to them, or a comment on the sad reality of my intellectual pursuits of late.

For those that dig outdoor stories, I recommend Dirtbag Diaries. Really great vignettes that are kinda like mini-Jon Krakauer books. Some are lame (like the one about the girl pissed that she left Oregon to work in DC for Nat'l Geo as a photog, and missed the mountains) but overall they're well done.

Also dig Woodsongs, which is old-time radio hour and features roots/americana music.

If you are a fan of the man and his work, check out Jay Mohr's podcast. If you like Jay, it's fucking manna from heaven. I had a serious, borderline embarrassing, public laughing moment yesterday with headphones on. Put 'cha name on it.

Tried but never could get into Hang Up and Listen. Too much soccer. Also, BE MORE FUCKING ENTERTAINING. Because of the subscribing to that whole Slate stream, I have picked up and started checking out the Culture Gabfest though which is pretty good.

Also been selectively digging some eps of Sound Opinions.

Edit: Also some motherfucking Rogan.

Got hooked on You Look Nice Today, which is very hard to describe. 3 guys talking to each other about nothing, with no particular themes. It's part comedy, part marketing sales pitch. When it's good, it's one-elbow-on-the-gas-tank-laughing good.

Been enjoying Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (MATES), which I found out through the AV Club's Podcast weekly review. Each week, Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanaugh literally pick a snack, eat a snack, and rate a snack (the "PERS" system). But really its a springboard for them to go off on whatever tangent that comes up (carrier pigeons, Michael Ian Black lamenting losing roles to Ian McShane, religion, etc). They have a really good comedic chemistry, and this is my new favorite podcast to listen to each week. It really needs to be heard to determine how well it works for you, but here's a review of a recent podcast about Take 5:

Quote:
Mike And Tom Eat Snacks #29: Hershey’s Take 5
It’s shaping up to be a pretty workaday snack review until the last few minutes of this week’s episode. Michael Ian Black fixes that with a choked-up monologue about how he didn’t even want to give the Take 5 candy bar a chance at first, but at the end of the day, had to admit that he was wrong. “Take 5 showed me that looks can be deceiving,” says a suddenly weepy Black. But there are still some playfully distracted moments before that, such as when Black and Cavanagh speculate on the New England hometown of the listener who sent them the Take 5: It’s a place where you have to be tough, Black guesses, because men go to sea and don’t always come back.
