Naturally. But it's a bit muted in comparison. It reminded me of Caol Ila. Remember it's a blend of different Islay single malts, which is kind of weird in concept, I think. Laphroaig is a primary component of the blend, said the bottle label.

So this probably shouldn't be THE thread for all whiskey like it has become. I suppose I could be the one to break that but I'm lazy

My wine shop emailed me about this Irish Whiskey last night:

K&L Wine Wrote:
Slieve Foy 8 Year Old Irish Single Malt Whiskey 750ml ($41.99) Yet another fantastic whiskey from Cooley distillery, who is looking to retain its newly awarded title of "best distillery in the world," as recently deemed from Malt Advocate. The Slieve Foy is alive in a way that most other whiskies are not - zesty fruit, sweet spices, and soft vanilla are all singing upon the entry. The vibrant character fades towards the back as the softness of the barrel aging slows things down, but the memory of it stays with you on the finish. The Slieve Foy is an Irish whiskey that screams to be heard above the more mild Redbreast and Paddy-filled crowd, but without losing its traditional Irish character. A solid, solid whiskey. -David Driscoll, K&L Wine Merchants "Pretty pale yellow/lemon juice/sauvignon blanc/oyster color; superb clarity. Reminds me of white pepper, butcher's wax paper, and beeswax in the first pungent sniffs after the pour; six minutes of additional air contact bring out tropical fruit scents, most notably papaya, as well as cereal grains. Entry flavors caress the taste buds in silky smooth sheets of flavor, especially palm oil, unsalted butter, and sweetened breakfast cereal; midpalate is a study in whiskey elegance and power co-existing in harmony as the taste profile exhibits controlled grainy sweetness, light, fresh honey, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), and light wood tones. Concludes with style and grace. Delicious and serious." Spirit Journal September 2010: 4 stars/Highly Recommended

Has anyone tried it? I guess this is an academic question as I'm still on the wagon and have a half a bottle of Redbreast and a full, unopened bottle of Connemara should I fall off.

Has anyone tried CANADIAN HUNTER WHISKEY? It's onsale for dirt-cheap this month and looks terrible but the reviews I've read have actually been overwhelmingly good.

no, but, i have tried FORTY CREEK, which is apparently the only canadian single malt, and it is quite good, and affordable.

Glad someone bumped this thread. I'd completely forgotten about this:

One of my worst hangovers ever after my Brother's Bachelor Party after we drank a bunch of this(plus a bunch of other stuff) - but I blame the Canadian Hunter. (Funny aside(to me at least), my other brother bought it specifically because the one getting married was marrying a Canadian - so he was the "Canadian Hunter")

Sipping on this tonight...quite nice even if I had trouble with the cork. Reminds me a lot of the Glenlivet 15 Year French Oak.

This past weekend, I had a few drinks out of a bottle of John L. Sullivan Irish. It was smooth and really oaky. I tend to like more nutty, caramel, honey, vanilla and fruit notes with the backbone of "barrel" or "cask" in my Irish so based upon reviews of it giving those exact aforementioned notes, I guess I should try it again to see if my palette can pick up on them.

Here is how the Wine Enthusiast rating compares with those of other Irish blends:

John L. Sullivan - 93: Superb/Highly Recommended

Jameson - 85-89: Very Good/Recommended

Bushmills - 85-89: Very Good/Recommended

Tullamore Dew - 85-89: Very Good/Recommended

Michael Collins - 85-89: Very Good/Recommended

That Slieve Foy I posted got a 95 from Wine Enthusiast. Probably not really a comparable to the John L. Sullivan though.

So I guess this thread evolved into the general whiskey/bourbon/scotch recommendation thread. Funny that I was just starting to get into whiskey when the thread started and now it's the spirit I drink most often.

So what whiskeys are folks drinking now?

Buffalo Trace is my standard bourbon mixer. I also have a variety of other bourbons and whiskeys that I've bought for a change of pace including Black Maple Hill Small Batch, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel, Old Weller Antique 107 Proof, Charbay Racer 5 Aged, George Dickle, and Smooth Ambler 14 year old very old scout. I'm hoping to score something from Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection this year but if not I'm probably done buying for awhile.

For Irish Whiskey sippers, I tried Redbreast, Connemara, and Slieve Foy before moving on to moving on to Wild Geese, Irish Soldiers & Heroes Limited Edition which I think is my favorite of the bunch.

Ha! I've been thinking about bourbon all week. The weather has finally changed and I've been getting the itch. Also, I've been going over the "Georgia loses to Florida" scenario where I open a bottle of Woodford Reserve I got for a wedding gift, pour over rocks, put on sunglasses, and play "The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down" in a room full of people.

So, been wanting to drink that but it's also got me wanting to pick up some others.

Debating:

Blanton's
Four Roses
Maker's Mark "46"
Evan Williams "Single Barrel"
Buffalo Trace

I've only had Blanton's and Four Roses of that bunch and liked them both.

I really WANT to get more into whiskeys because I think they offer a lot of the tastes my palette likes, but just keep drinking beer after beer. Plus I can't get away with spending $50+ on a bottle of whiskey without femdisco giving me the stink eye (you see, she likes beer, but not whiskey).

A few months back I did do an impromptu Rye tasting at a local restaurant. Everyone gave Michter'sat least a 4/5 on our scale. 2nd place went to Bulleit, 3rd to Old Potrero and the Lowest rated was Sazerac

Does she really need to know what a bottle costs? The only reason I'd even consider volunteering to Fem G what a bottle cost was if I was afraid she was going to make whiskey sours with an expensive, well aged bottle.

I think she has a general feeling that I spend more than she'd like me too on booze and wine but I try to employ the "don't ask, don't tell" policy as much as I can.

first snow last night, so i poured the last glass of Blanton's to keep warm. i think i'm going with Woodford Reserve next, mostly because i spotted a gift box with 2 nice rocks glasses at the liquor store.

i also have an unopened bottle of Glenlivet Nadurra 16 year old waiting on me too.

"Nadurra" is Scots-Gaelic for "knock you on your ass".

If you're into the cask strength, non-chill filtered scotches...make your favorite store go out of their way to get you a bottle of Aberlour Abunadh. It's yummy.

This month's Esquire (featuring the beautiful Mila Kunis) gives a run down of their best "non-peaty" Scotches, so I paid attention

I hear that the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is going to be hitting stores in the next couple of weeks so be on the lookout.

Whisky Advocate just released their top whiskys of the year:

http://www.whiskyadvocateblog.com/2012/ ... ter-issue/

I was walking by a wine shop by my office at lunch and on a whim decided to walk in. Low and behold, there was a lone bottle of the #1 whisky, Four Roses LE Small Batch sitting on the shelf. California distributors sold out of it in two days and it never even made it to the shelf at the store I usually buy from. Suffice it to say that it's no longer on their shelf.

I've drank my fair share of retardedly expensive Scotch.
And while I don't ascribe to the expectation that Scotch must be consumed only at room-temp with a cigar 3/4 of an inch up my asshole while browsing Lands End,
I can appreciate an obnoxiously smoky peat straight pour.

My go-to, for the price and the flavor, has always been a seltzered down glass of 12 yr. Glenlivett with a handful of ice cubes.

We're huge Jameson fans here.

Josh turned me onto whiskey about two years ago and I've never looked back. Besides wine this is the only other thing I'll drink.

During times that I was trying to save money I tried cheaper whiskey's but they tasted like swill. There's just something about Jamesons that makes my taste buds dance.

In fact I get a little panicky when we run out. So we usually keep a bottle on hand at all times.

so the liquor store that promised me a bottle of Pappy when it came in the week of Thanksgiving actually received this:

Image

i'm only slightly bummed, as i've never tried any of the van winkle line, but i was winning major father-in-law points with that Pappy. still, we'll polish off this bottle while we watch his cowboys lose!

Tullamore is also ok on the cheap end but Black Bush, Redbreast and Knappogue Castle (yum) all better. Moving to Ireland when I was 21 fixed my whisky tastes in stone.
