The kinds of people with a spare $3M aren't really the kinds of people who would buy a music collection.

Hasn't this been for sale for a while now? I feel like I read or saw something --probably when it first went up for sale.

at some point this guy went from a music fan to solely a collector. he was so focused on the archive idea that he was hesitant to let anything be bought for, like, anything less than 5x its value. you'd go into the shop, pick out something good and he'd say something like, "oh, that's not for sale. but i'll tape it for you for $20." he openly blamed consumers and then wondered why business suffered.

I actually drew a parallel between him and Joe Bussard up the road from me, who owned Fonotone Records. There's a fantastic doc and boxset available. He was obsessive about 78s and 45s from bygone eras. He owns a lot of stuff no one owns as well. Apparently, if you ask he'll let you come down and hang and listen. Keep hoping to bump into him at Barbara Fritchie Restaurant where he always eats breakfast.

That's interesting, Z. The way he speaks about technology, seems that he wouldn't even want to desecrate the music by taping it either.

yeah, you would think so. he clearly doesn't have any issue with sharing music as long as he can make a profit (even if it's blatantly illegal), but he is/was far too concerned with the prestige of the archive to be a good businessman. like, god forbid he sells some xtc album he only has 3 copies of. he has some amazing things like the rare rolling stones record he mentions and probably a yesterday & today butcher cover or something similar, but you can go through entire rows of that collection and find nothing but junk. that's why nobody's made serious offers. who even has the space for that many records, especially when only a small percentage is worthwhile?

Nope. At least, not according to the Wikipedia page about him. It "sold" but of course the bids were frauds. He tried a second time and, again, the winner didn't pay. As it stands, the collection remains in limbo.

I think he's going to have to hand-pick the titles worth money and sell them individually.

Though, he seems to be a bonehead about the whole thing and will probably keel over dead before he breaks up the collection.
