Stu,
You should try the Lucky Bucket Beers now that they are available in the Nashville market.

The brewery is actually located in La Vista, NE, not here in Lincoln, but they are a highly respected Brewery and the only commercial distillery in the Cornhusker state.

Thanks for the heads up. They have this up at my favorite taproom/restaurant in town. Will have to try their stuff.

I'm going to my beer spot on the way home and getting one of those.

I was undesevervedly lucky this evening and involved in a brew tasting birthday party at my favorite brew pub. The person primarily responsible for bringing some great beers to Lincoln, allowed his friends to bring some product to the bar and I was fortunate to taste some beers that I would normally have to travel great distances to procure.

I started the evening with a Mikkeller East Kent Golding IPA on tap.

Then I had a small glass of Bell's Hop Slam from a minikeg, which was devine and then these delicious beers:

Jester King Imperial Black Metal Stout

Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron

Had a couple new-to-me things last night with dinner at Kickbacks with Kyle, the youngest son.

Image

Smisje Wostyntje, Belgian Strong Pale Ale, 7%- Hell, I was intrigued enough just by the name, which no one in the house, including me, could seem to pronounce. The waitress read a description of it from her iphone- summarized the best I remember, in layman's terms, they cram a bunch of hops in at the beginning, cook it for 50 minutes or so, fermentation #1, dump in some sugar and spices and a different variety of hops for fermentation #2, and sooner or later, you gots a BSPA. The kicker in the ingredients is a reasonably healthy dose of mustard seed.

That was enough to have a glass brought to table from a freshly tapped keg. It was medium caramel-colored, quite cloudy, with a prominent head that lingered for the duration; aroma was unhoppy, distinctively malt, with a spiciness that must have been the mustard. First taste, and I got scared that it was overly sweet for my liking, but that disappeared with the onset of the spiciness of the mustard and yeasty malt goodness. I'm not talking about any flavor similar to what you put on your Ballpark frank, and nowhere near over-powering. Well-balanced blend of flavors, and pleasantly unique enough to warrant a revisit, given the opportunity. Solid B+.

Image

Ommegang Rare Vos, Amber Ale, 6.5%- I agree with Derris on this one. From another freshly tapped keg, an imminently drinkable copper-colored brew with a deftly handled mix of malt, fruits, and spices in the mouth and a very slight hop finish. I could drink this stuff any day, and at 6.5%, probably a goodly number of them. And it paired nicely with the venison stew. They done good. A-.

Kyle had a Bell's Double Cream Stout (at least I think that's what it was called)- he loved it, but not my style at all, and when I tried a sip, I wanted to lick a dog's ass to get the taste out of my mouth. After he tasted my Rare Vos, he switched over.

Finished the night with a glass of Affligem Blonde because it's dead reliable and a great "let's go home" beer.

Not an everyday beer for sure but the thing that kept coming to mind was breakfast. This, along with some bacon and eggs would be gotdamn delicious.

You are one twisted motherfucker.

So FemDerris has been gone all week so have been left to my own devices. After waking up early to take the dog out Saturday I decided to put my theory to the test. So, for a late breakfast (or early lunch) I placed a pick up order at Waffle House (All Star Special: Eggs, Bacon, wheat toast, hash browns, and waffle). On my way to pick it up I stopped at the liquor store and picked up a Taddy Porter to go with this hearty breakfast.

It was fucking perfect. Didn't go as well with the waffle and maply syrup but the rest was just what I hoped it would be. I sucked it down like a great cup of coffee.

Finished the food and the beer and then proceeded to take a 2 hour nap. Possibly the highlight of my weekend.

Others of note (or disdain):

21st Amendment - Monk's Blood-THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Tis the season I guess. On Friday I went and checked out this new craft beer store in a another part of town and they had this in stock so I pulled the trigger. Only had 1 so far and I thought it was pretty good. Will never be confused with a real Belgian but it had high drinkability. There is a certain novelty to having this in a can but at $10 a 4 pack there isn't enough there to warrant the price IMO. B-.

Image

21st Amendment - Live Free of Die IPA-Went to a bar to watch the Duke/UNC game. For the record for my Atlanta folks, there may be no better place for sports fans and beer fans than Taco Mac. Their beer list is no joke. Anyway, I was checking this out when I bought the Monk's Blood and owner was talking about (actually just talking about the packaging). I was having some Buffalo chicken tacos so I was looking for an IPA and they had this on the list. I thought it was meh at best. Similar to a 1000 other IPA's but not quite as good. Utterly forgettable. C-

Insert game watching Bud Lights here....

Oh, and one more:

Clipper City Brewing - Heavy Seas - Loose Cannon (Hop3) IPA

So many names. I know Clipper City is the brewer but then what is Heavy Seas? The beer is Loose Cannon.

Regardless, this is what I should've ordered to go with my dinner. Easily the best discovery of the weekend. This reminded my very much of Bell's Hopslam. It has that super piney, citrusy, bite to it that balances out the alchohol (7.25% ABV). Much like Hopslam, I wouldnt' drink but one of two of these and probably with something spicy. Still, for those who can't get Hopslam this is a very nice alternative and cheaper (I think).

Then again, this was my last beer of the night so my judgement was a little clouded. I'll still try it again to make sure I wasn't just drunk.

Heavy Seas is just a sub-brewery under the Clipper City division. Same people.

I went up to Syracuse this weekend and hit up Middle Ages Brewery.

Tried:
    Apricot Ale
    Wizard's Winter Ale
    Duke of Winship
    ImPaled Ale
    Syracuse Pale Ale
    Swallow Wit
    Middle Ages Ale

Swallow Wit was very watery, and the Syracuse PA was surprisingly lacking taste. The Duke was a stout and overdid the coffee flavor just a bit too much, but was still pretty hearty and not bad. Wizard's Winter was a nice middle of the road beer. The IPA and Middle Ages Ale were probably the best. Surprisingly, most of the people there couldn't get enough of the Wit, so who knows. Not a huge fan of "fruit" beers, but the apricot ale was pretty refreshing. Not something I'd buy a sixer of, but still decent.

Bought a 22s of their Double IPA and Dragonslayer (Imperial Stout). The Druid Fluid (barleywine) was pretty heavily touted as well. Next time up, I'll try that.

At a pub downtown, I tried this:

Three Heads Brewing Co. Skunk Black IPA

Very good. Too bad it looks like its a fairly limited batch run. Would love to get this down my way. Inky black with the hops that an IPA comes with. Tasted great with my turkey and brie sandwich.

21st Ammendment - Back In Black
Image
(Insulated glass courtesy of Busty LaRoux) - Shiv's had these a few times, I recall, and I've finally gotten around to picking up a 6er. I have 4 left, and I really like them. This whole "black IPA," by the way, rivals only "ageing in wood barrels" as this year's new beer fad. If double or triple monster holy shit IPA's were the last big trend, or maybe "making belgians in america," then it seems like I've seen a few of these black IPA's sprouting up, the other one around here being Otter Creek, a smallish mediocre rewery from VT. But I like the dark malt flavor, and the big wet hop flavor. I guess maybe because it's a little different, and because it's very drinkable, and plus in this case... cans. I fucking love cans. B+

New Glarus - Back 40 Bock
Image
Good 'Ol New Glarus brewery, always reminds me of Madison. This and a few others were knocking around my father in law's garage fridge last week when I visited ATL. A WI relative brought them down the month prior, and dad In Law don't do anything strong, he's an MGD man. "Do you think you could drink these, please, before they go bad." You, sir, have come to the right person. So the beer. As with most of theirs, it's malty and minerally, and early hopped (most of their beers are dry like that, unless it's a big IPA). It was perfectly fine, but not a knock out. B

New Glarus - Coffee Stout
Image
You know, sometimes I'm in the mood for a stout, but not a big bad holy shit stout. This is perfect in that regard, just enough to be interesting but still borderline-slammable. Again, I dug what they make, and I love to support them. Good folks. B

Sweetwater - Georgia Brown Ale
Image
Mom's fridge was the same... "I bought these for your uncle but he didn't drink them." SAY NO MORE. Sweetwater is probably a better overall brewery than New Glarus, but they don't have that one killer variety that slays people in an everyday, drink-a-caseload-at-the-lake kinda way (Spotted Cow). This is perfectly fine, matly and hoppy and good but not something I'd probably seek out. B

St. Bernardus - Abt 12
Image
All this takl of Abbey 12 make me fucking go out and get one a few weeks back. Hadn't had this before, I don't think. I couldn't wait any more last night and broke it out. This deserves the praise it gets here, it's mellow and FULL FLAVOR but still so incredibly pleasant. Coppery tan in color, almost think enough to drink with a fork. And the flavor changes with temperature, for sure. Everything is here - big yeast flavor, several kinds of malt flavor, good hops to balance it out, and note of alcohol that can't quite hide itself behind all that other stuff. 10% hit my empty stomach pretty damned hard before dinner, even though I was sipping from a tiny cup... Much like the Wu Tang Clan, Abbey 12 is nothing to fuck with. It doesn't get much better than this. Solid A.

So glad that you finally tasted that Abt 12. Probably my favorite beer in the world right now (along with Guinness, of course).
Glad that you dug it as much as you did.

- Taddy for breakfast made me crack up. That's fucking awesome / awful / awesome again. Reminds me of the Algerian guys in the brewery who used to sneak beers in their overalls all morning, go for "lunch" at 9:30am, get fucked up behind the pallets in the warehouse, and stumble back all glassy-eyed (and full-bladdered.)

- Rare Vos... this is next on my list. That's two or three glowing reviews. I'm on it.

- This weekend is the big crazy beer fest that I got a solo ticket to. I'll have to take pics and make notes, and really fucking pick my spots... nobody there to keep me straight.

No shit. Look at Gar's pic towards the top of the thread and compare it to Squirgs.

Regardless, epic beer.

Also, I thought it was Abbott 12 and not Abbey 12?

I've never gotten a defining explanation on that.

Yeah, glad yr going. Definitely looking forward to pics.

I see Derris had Monk's Blood. I was surprised by this as well, and really like it. Haven't been able to find it since I got it initially though.

It's seasonal I believe and released just a couple of weeks ago. If your local craft shop is going to have it, it's right now.

My "review" of it was pretty cursory. I think I'll have another one tonight and re-evaluate.

Also, came across these.

This year's Bell's packaging for the Oberon and Two Hearted mini-kegs. Wasn't aware that these were available much less that people openly collect them:

Oooooh fuck oh fuck ohg fuck. Just the thought of a fridge keg each of Oberon and 2 Hearted on hand... I think the Chicago visit in 2 weeks will probably have a lot of Bell's in it. I love Goose Island too, but I can get it here.

And for "abbot" I'm just beign lazy. Abbot is the head of a monastery, I guess "head monk." As for the beer color in the pic, it's in a mid-low light room with no flash so it would look pretty light, but it's what it looks like if you hold it up to the light in a thin glass - that's probably the biggest thing with that photo, the glass is really small so it looks lighter. I got two of those little Beer Fest glasses from my buddy Porter in VT.
