For artists who want their music to be heard a certain way. Here's the Javelin one:

Which, is actually pretty cool because its a soundtrack for a western.

Probably won't catch on, but I think they're pretty cool. I'd definitely be up for buying one from a band I like if it isn't too expensive.

I'm thinking they'd have to be able sell them for around $20 or less for many people to buy them, and that might not be feasible. I see that Javelin is selling theirs for a "$25 donation" toward making their psychedelic western movie thing.

Yeah, but you also get a DVD of the film and a "digital mixtape".

I see. So maybe other ones might be sold for less?

On the site it says that a Mount Eerie one is forthcoming. I might be interesting in that.

I think they look like fun novelty items, but one of the biggest conveniences of digital players and what has made them so popular is carrying around a large amount of music in a small space and if each one of these is an individual album you pretty much eliminate that huge benefit.

i reached out to playbutton when i first heard of these a few months ago. they cost $7-$9 per unit to manufacture, depending on the order, and they intend for them to retail at $20-$30, higher for premium bundling with a t-shirt or whatever.

cute idea, but they're fuckin dreaming.

The way I'm looking at it, is it won't become the primary distributor of music, but it could become a way for musicians to limited run EPs and the like. It probably yields a higher profit margin for the band, because of its unusual nature. Or I could see bands that were into cassettes dropping them in favor for these.

For the record, I "donated" $25 for the Javelin kickstarter project.

I'm gonna guess it's not double A, timmy.

I find this concept intriguing. Not wholly practical... but a fun novelty concept, at the least.

Probably the same batteries that power those blinking buttons that TGI Fridays servers wear.

Though, it could very well be one of these:
