The beer reviews as scribbled in my journal at the time. They're a little hard to read... I forgot a pen, but I found a pencil stub on Clarendon Street and sharpened it as I walked to the event from the subway. No editing here, for better or worse.

1. Founder's - Kaiser's Curmudgeon
Maple bourbon barrel aged Old Ale, 10.8%
Guy told me it was aged in barrels that start as maple syrup, then get used for bourbon, then this beer. I asked where they go next and he had no idea. Copper color, spicey, sweet finish. Great. A

2. Weyerbacker - Anniversary Smoked Imperial Stout - 10.8%
Lots of malt and smoke, can't cover the semi-cheap taste in the background. It's not amazing. Like having a regular cheap stout next to a campfire. And somehow my burps taste like budweiser. B-

3. Rogue - Younger's Special Bitter
English Bitter, 4.8%
Smoothe, plain, they copped the style very well. M-E-L-L-O-W. B+
Quote:
4. Rogue - Russian Imperial Stout, 11%
Darkest malt roast I've ever tasted. BURNT. Good. But you have to pace yourself... a very intense flavor. A
Quote:
5. The Lost Abbey - Saison Blanc
Saison with green raisins, white pepper, french oak, 5%
You sniff it, and it almost smells like ... dinner is cooking. White pepper I assume. It's not offensive but it doesn't find some great new place as a session beer. Doomed to the "Experiment" bin I would guess. Pleasant diversion. B
Quote:
6. Dogfish - World Wide Stout vs. Randall 3.0
Imperial Stout w/ JP Licks Espresso Beans, 18%
Jesus. 18%... it's so thick and SWEET. It's got the smell of sugar, malt, and like ... tomatoes. No escaping the smell and taste of BOOZE. This is a tall order. A-
Quote:
7. The Lost Abbey - Cuvee de Tomme
Wild Ale, bourbon barrel blend with Brett yeast and sour cherries, 10%
Smells STRONGLY of booze, oak, and sour cherries [this was before I looked up what was in it]. -Gulp- If you're into the more sour flavors, this is excellent. It's pretty tart, but if you're adventurous it would be pleasant. I would almost buy one. Almost. B+

8. Hill Farmstead Brewery - Jim
Black IPA, wine wine bbl aged, 7.5%
Very fresh-tasting black IPA. Crisp, green, sessionable, and from VT! I like. A-

9. Hill Farmstead Brewery - Phenominology
? Not listed in official program
Called a "dark saison aged in oak barrels." Ok. Well, they did the "oak" part very well, it's subtle / pleasant and it helps. The belgian part I do not taste. B-

Note: There's, like ... tail here. I thought this would be like 90% dudes. Huh.

10. Founder's - Backwoods Bastard
Bbl-aged scotch ale, 10.2%
WHOOOOOO. Sharp as hell, spicey, complex, dry, BOOZE. There's a (relatively) core flavor of scotch ale in here [and this was before I looked it up - way to go squirrgle!], but then they've built what tastes like 4 or 5 layers on top of it. My first A+ and well deserved.
Quote:
11. Harpoon - Uncle Fester
Wild Ale, blended bbls, 6.75%
A little bit of wood, a little bit of "funky," dense and brown in color, odd sour / sweet combo. Ok, not compelling. B+
Quote:
Note: Sweet fucking christ the line for Dogfish is still halfway across the place.
Quote:
12. Berkshire Brewing Co. - ESDK
Dark Kölsch, dry hopped w/ Saaz, 4.3%
Dark kölsch? Never heard of a dark one. It is bready, dry, and has a sweet start like a kölsch, Color is only slightly darker than regular Kölsch, lighter than like Bass. I'd love a case of this. B+
Quote:
13. Berkshire Brewing Co. - 2010 Raspberry Barleywine
9.5%
Oh damn... this works REALLY well. Finally a beer that fires on all cyls at once. Rich, thick, sweet and bitter, and the fruit is up front but not overpowering. Just excellent. A
Quote:
14. Bobcat Cafe / Brewery - Brick Wall IPA
Double IPA, 100% VT hops, dry hopped, 9.8%
Meh. Too dry and bitter for me, no late hop sweet / green balance. B-
Quote:
15. The Bruery - Oude Tart w/ Cherries
? Not in program.
Similar to other sour cherry thing I had... whatever. B-
Quote:
16. The Bruery - Saison de Lente
? Also not listed
Too sharp and bitter to be a Derris-grade saison. Too spicey to do The Robot to. I like it, I'd buy it, but it's living in 2 different worlds. Special occasion 1-off beer, or session beer? B
Quote:
17. Avery - The Beast
Grand Cru Ale - 15%
WHOA. Sugar, alcohol, and hops in 3 equally gigantic proportions. "It ain't no joke, I had to back up off it." Spicey and sweet and not to be trifled with.

18. Founder's - Nemesis 2010
Midnight Barleywine, 12%
= What you'd expect. Big loud smoothe beer, mostly "sweet" and "hoppy" and BOOZE. A-
Quote:
19. Allagash - Indiginuts
Cider yeast, French Oak, 9%
Straw blonde color but thick and full. Smells like red wine. Seriously, it smells like grapes. Guy from Beer Advocate just took my picture, looked at the shot, and cracked up. That could be good, or it could be bad. B+
Quote:
20. Allagash- Big Little Beer
Hoppy Session Beer - 5%
He told me it was made in collaboration with Beer Advocate for Belgian Fest. This is the 2nd run. Smells like 1 thing, then tastes like something completely different. Cloudly pale yellow, has a belgian base but it's more tart and sour than that. Wierd. B
