I'll be surprised if BYU makes it past the opening weekend.

I'm just commenting on the 52 he dropped on New Mexico tonight. That is awesome guard play regardless of the competition.

this unc team gives me a heart attack. Has college basketball ever been better? I know the cool thing to say is that early nba entrants have diluted the talent pool, but I feel like every team (except u of cincinnati) has a shot at this thing.

Paul Hewitt fired at Georgia Tech: recruited well, graduated kids, not even a whiff of scandal...didn't win enough games.

He can put the $7.2 million they owe him in his pants to cushion the door hitting him in the ass on the way out.

you say that like it means that he did a good job. if he'd recruited well he'd have won more games and he'd still have that job.

I'd rather have the 7.2 and have my afternoons free.

Oh I think he did recruit well (certainly well enough to have a winning record in the ACC more than ONCE in 11 seasons), I just (personally) always thought he was a shitty coach. Even if you take out the one and done guys like Bosh, Thad Young, Javaris Crittenton and Derrick Favors, he always had a shitload of talent.

Best analysis/explanation I heard: He should give at least half of that money to Jarrett Jack since he basically "coached" that team that lost to UConn in the National Championship game (resulting in this monster contract)--how else to explain what can now be called a damn ol' fluke?

Says the guy whose team won the ACC regular season, just won back to back come from behind thrillers, and is playing in the title game.

But I get what you're saying. There are probably 15 teams with a legit shot to win it all.

As much as it pains me to say it, I think Ohio St. should be the overall #1 and I think they're the team to beat. They're crazy deep beside having a great starting 5.

As good as things have been this past week, I also watched some HORRIFIC basketball throughout January and February by 2nd tier teams in the SEC and ACC. I'd go easy on the "has college basketball ever been better".

WHERE ARE MY GEORGIA BRETHREN!?!?!?!?!

10 SEED!?!?!?

JESUS. Let this be a lesson kids. RPI fucking matters.

Where you at Marco????

Also, there is potential for a long awaited moment between FemDerris and I in the 2nd round should UGA pull off an upset. I've long asked her where her loyalty would lie should UNC and UGA ever face off in anything.

She has always maintained UGA will be first forever.

Hopefully, we'll find out.

I'm looking at tickets for Friday in Charlotte.

Fuck it.

Dawgs vs. Dawgs!

I think UW got a very tough draw. I'm fine with the 7 seed but to ship us to the east to play vs UGA and possibly UNC? Both those teams will have decided home court advantages over UW. Not to mention it will be a 9 am tip time for them on Friday. Not going to be easy. Oh well.

I didn't see UGA play this year. What are their strengths and weaknesses? What style of ball do they play?

The other UW got a tough draw too. Everything I've read about Belmont scares the crap out of me.

Our starting 5 can play with anyone but we have ZERO bench. If UW is deep you are already looking good. In every game against the Top 25 this year we were up at halftime (save Vandy and UK at their places) but we just can't hold the leads.

Travis Leslie is a human highlight reel with his athleticism and currently a predicted 2nd rounder for the NBA. Thing is he doesn't play much D and is spotty as a jump shooter.

Everything goes through Trey Thompkins though. Currently a top 12 draft pick in the 1st round and was an SEC player of the year candidate. Great offensive game but he drives my fucking crazy. He wants to play like Dirk Nowitzki. He wants to play facing the basket and shoots threes. He's almost 7 feet and had ONE rebound in our SEC tourney loss to Bama. Awful. He is not a shut down defensive player.

We have some other role players but no true, lights out, 3 point threat. We play really good team ball but we just don't have the bench to beat the big boys..................yet.

Should be a GREAT game.

I'm just glad Bama got hosed.

I must have read something wrong. I now see they're playing the late game---9:45/6:45 p.m. Much better.

Yeah, no way they weren't going to have Carolina play in prime time. Looking at the brackets this morning, the East region is brutal.

So, what's the story on the 2011 Huskies?

Also, this next little 3 week stretch might be my favorite sports time of the year.

Tourney, Masters, Opening Day for MLB.

Maybe 2nd only to the 3 weeks in October when college football is playing it's biggest games, NFL is in midseason form, and postseason baseball is going on during the week.

Not to mention NASCAR is in it's final 10 races

I read something that the payout comes to approximately $3400 per day for the next 5 years.

Colorado got hosed (and that's coming from a Husker fan, no less)...

Regardless, looking forward to this tourney big time. Parity is at a level never seen before in my lifetime, IMHO.

Go Marquette (tough draw w/ Xavier)... good luck with that.

They were the prohibitive favorite to win the Pac 10 this year and underachieved. They started very strong (13-3/7-1 conf) but hit a 3 game losing streak mid-season to 3 relatively weak teams on the road. Then they lost a couple of home games near the end of the season (they rarely lose at home) to limp in in 3rd place. They got it together for the P10 tourney though and seem to be hitting their stride again.

They are a deep team with 9 guys getting regular playing time. They are long and athletic types that prefer to play an up-tempo style on offense but can grind out games if needed. They started the season playing exclusively man-to-man D but Romar has them playing zone about 1/3 of the time when the game dictates.

Romar changed the starting 5 for the P10 tourney. He had been starting Thomas (5-9), Wilcox (6-5), Holiday (6-6), Bryan-Amaning (6-9), N'Diaye (7-0) for most the season. He replaced N'Diaye with T. Ross (6-6) to get more speed and scoring on the floor and we went 3-0 in the tourney. We also didn't have our backup PG, V. Overton, for the tourney (suspended for an infraction involving alcohol and 17 year old girls) so IT had to play 123 of 125 minutes in the 3 games. Overton will be back for this tourney so I'm not sure what Romar will do with the starting lineup and rotation for the NCAA.

Although we have relatively balanced scoring, our primary scorers are IT penetrating to the rim to score or dish and Amaning on the low block. Our perimeter wing players (Wilcox, Ross and Suggs) are all 6-5/6-7 and are lights-out shooters. When one or more of them are on and IT is penetrating they can be pretty prolific. At times they get a little 3-happy, though and this got them into trouble when they were not hitting the jumpers. Like I said above, they are at their best when they are playing aggressive, man to man, pressure D leading to fast breaks and up tempo offense.

Their weaknesses:

1. FT shooting % is not good enough.
2. Basketball IQ seems to be lacking at times
3. Jacking too many contested 3's
4. Slow starts--they tend to get down 8-10 points early and have to fight their way back
5. Coaching X's & O's: Romar is a great motivator, recruiter, person but not the best in-game, X/O's coach. This will likely bite them at some point in the tourney, possibly in game 1 vs. UGA.

I'm looking forward to a good game. If they play like they did in the P10 tourney I think they've got a good chance vs. UGA and maybe even UNC. Good luck to both Dawgs.
