Setting a goal of completing my first official solo album by this time next year.
Solo/acoustic. Just me and a guitar, if I can resist the urge to add a bunch of overdubs.

Braves coach loses eye after hit by line drive

Quote:
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP)—Atlanta Braves minor league manager Luis Salazar has lost an eye after he was struck in the face by a line drive while watching a spring training game.

Braves general manager Frank Wren said Wednesday that doctors were unable to save Salazar’s left eye after the accident March 9. The former major league player is otherwise recovering from his injuries and expects to manage Lynchburg of the Class A Carolina League this season.

The 54-year-old Salazar was standing against the railing on the top step of the dugout during a game between the Braves and St. Louis Cardinals when Brian McCann(notes) fouled a ball in his direction. Salazar was unable to get out of the way and fell head-first back into the dugout.

The game was stopped for almost 20 minutes so Salazar could be airlifted to an Orlando hospital. He regained consciousness on the way and was treated for multiple facial fractures, but doctors were unable to save his left eye.

“In the big picture, and that’s what we have to keep in mind, this is a good outcome,” Wren said. “He’s alive.”

McCann was badly shaken and didn’t return when the game resumed. He visited Salazar in the hospital and has stayed in touch.

“It’s a crazy, crazy thing that happened,” McCann said the day after Salazar was struck. “So unfortunate. You feel hopeless.”

Wren said that Salazar would spend about a week at home in Boca Raton, Fla., and then return to Braves camp at some point this spring. The minor-league season begins April 7 and Salazar had been serving as an extra major league coach when struck.

“Doctors have told us and him that there is no reason why, in about four or six weeks, he can’t manage his team as he anticipated,” Wren said.

Salazar is in his first year with the Braves organization.

I was just openly mocking this line of thinking not 5 mins ago.

My fungeeb of the week: They say bad things come in 3s - First Japan, then Hooters in Montgomery closes, and now Nate Dogg Dies. I didn't post this to Twitter because I didn't want AFLAC to fire me.

Copyright Experts Ask House Judiciary Panel
To ‘Follow the Money' Against Rogue Sites

Congress should act to enable the government to “follow the money” in attempts to shut down “rogue” websites that host infringing material, according to members of a panel testifying March 14 before the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee.

The hearing—titled “Promoting Investment and Protecting Commerce Online: Legitimate Sites v. Parasites, Part I”—was the first of at least two subcommittee hearings that will address the question of websites that host massive amounts of unauthorized material, particularly streaming motion pictures, according to the subcommittee chairman, Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte (R-Va.).
Witnesses and subcommittee members also expressed concern that any action taken might result in infringing on the due process or free speech rights of individual website operators.

Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), ranking minority member of the full Judiciary Committee, offered a draft definition of “rogue site”:

An Internet site is ‘a rogue site' if—
(A) such site is primarily structured in order to, and has no demonstrable, or significant commercial purpose or use other than to offer goods or services in violation of title 17, including by offering or providing access to, in a manner not authorized by the intellectual property owner or otherwise by operation of law, copies of, or public performance or display of, works protected by title 17, in complete or substantially complete form, by any means, including by means of download, streaming or other transmission, or otherwise; and
(B) the activities described in subparagraph (A) are central to the activity of the Internet site.

Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media

Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same.

The Centcom contract stipulates that each fake online persona must have a convincing background, history and supporting details, and that up to 50 US-based controllers should be able to operate false identities from their workstations "without fear of being discovered by sophisticated adversaries".

Centcom spokesman Commander Bill Speaks said: "The technology supports classified blogging activities on foreign-language websites to enable Centcom to counter violent extremist and enemy propaganda outside the US."

He said none of the interventions would be in English, as it would be unlawful to "address US audiences" with such technology, and any English-language use of social media by Centcom was always clearly attributed. The languages in which the interventions are conducted include Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Pashto.

Centcom said it was not targeting any US-based web sites, in English or any other language, and specifically said it was not targeting Facebook or Twitter.

Once developed, the software could allow US service personnel, working around the clock in one location, to respond to emerging online conversations with any number of co-ordinated messages, blogposts, chatroom posts and other interventions. Details of the contract suggest this location would be MacDill air force base near Tampa, Florida, home of US Special Operations Command.

Centcom's contract requires for each controller the provision of one "virtual private server" located in the United States and others appearing to be outside the US to give the impression the fake personas are real people located in different parts of the world.

It also calls for "traffic mixing", blending the persona controllers' internet usage with the usage of people outside Centcom in a manner that must offer "excellent cover and powerful deniability".

The multiple persona contract is thought to have been awarded as part of a programme called Operation Earnest Voice (OEV), which was first developed in Iraq as a psychological warfare weapon against the online presence of al-Qaida supporters and others ranged against coalition forces. Since then, OEV is reported to have expanded into a $200m programme and is thought to have been used against jihadists across Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East.

OEV is seen by senior US commanders as a vital counter-terrorism and counter-radicalisation programme. In evidence to the US Senate's armed services committee last year, General David Petraeus, then commander of Centcom, described the operation as an effort to "counter extremist ideology and propaganda and to ensure that credible voices in the region are heard". He said the US military's objective was to be "first with the truth".

This month Petraeus's successor, General James Mattis, told the same committee that OEV "supports all activities associated with degrading the enemy narrative, including web engagement and web-based product distribution capabilities".

Centcom confirmed that the $2.76m contract was awarded to Ntrepid, a newly formed corporation registered in Los Angeles. It would not disclose whether the multiple persona project is already in operation or discuss any related contracts.

Nobody was available for comment at Ntrepid.

So the US government is 10 years behind every single corporation in the world? Shocking? Why don't you write a review of a Pearl Jam record while you're at it.
